Gregg Abbott thanks supporters for calling Wendy Davis "Retard Barbie" |
From Texas Democrats: This weekend, Greg Abbott went on Twitter to thank a supporter for saying that the Attorney General could beat Senator Wendy Davis in a gubernatorial race, teaching "Retard Barbie" a "life lesson." Despicable. In one comment, Attorney General Greg Abbott has insulted every Texan with a partisan attack on the senator. It's beneath the office of the Attorney General, and the office Abbott now seeks -- governor of our great state. Nancy -- he should be ashamed. These meanspirited remarks insult all women, members of the disability community, and a great public servant like Senator Davis. Here's the thing -- this is what Republicans think about women. They think that a Harvard law school graduate, state senator, mother of two, and a long-time fighter for Texas families deserves to be spoken to like this, in a public forum. These comments tell you all you need to know about the Republican Party of Texas and its attitude towards women and those with disabilities. We've got to stop an anti-women candidate like Greg Abbott from becoming our next Governor. http://splash.txdemocrats.org/ Texas Defends Voting Laws: "We Don't Want Democrats To Vote" So mere hours after the Supreme Court struck down Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, Texas wasted no more time and re-instituted the same redistricting plan the courts had already ruled as unconstitutional. The same with their new voter suppression bill.

Why are we all yelling at each other when we should be yelling at gerrymandering? Read more... |

| The Changing Face of Poverty Across Dallas |
Recently the Urban Institute created a mapping tool to show how pockets of poverty across the country have changed and expanded over the last 30 years. Using Census data, they placed dots on the map for every 20 people with incomes below the poverty line. Whites are represented in blue, blacks are yellow, Hispanics green, and Asians red. When looking at Dallas (see screenshot images above), the two most noticeable changes from 1980 to 2010 are 1) How much more green there is on the map and 2) How the pockets of poverty are less concentrated in the city itself and have spread into the suburbs. (Chicago magazine noticed a similar expansion in their city.) read on |
Texas cops raid farm commune when mistaking tomato plants for marijuana In Mid Cities |
Police in Arlington, Texas are being criticized for their tactics during a drug raid on a local farm that came up empty while allegedly damaging both the property and the crops. "They can't even tell the difference between tomato plants and a marijuana drug cartel," farm resident Quinn Eaker told KXAS-TV. "That's just really bad intel." Eaker said to KXAS that he and several residents at the "Garden of Eden" sustainability garden were handcuffed at gunpoint by officers during the Aug. 2 raid, which also involved a SWAT team, after an undercover officer and helicopter surveillance allegedly gave authorities probable cause to believe there was marijuana being grown on the premises. read on
