Federal judge rules in favor of Bush Center protestors, calls Dallas' picketing ordinance 'unconstitutionally vague'

Late Friday, six activists won their battle with the city of Dallas over their plans to protest next week's opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center on the SMU campus.

In his 12-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis ruled that protestors can stage their rally at the SMU-owned Expressway Tower, where the university gave them the OK to gather. He also voided, at least temporarily, the city's ordinance that bans "the carrying of signs on, over, or near freeways." Solis said it's "unconstitutionally vague" and therefore unenforceable.

"How 'bout that," says Hadi Jawad, one of the organizers of The People's Response, which will feature marches, demonstrations and rallies throughout the week. Jawad wasn't aware the judge had granted the temporary restraining order until contacted by The Dallas Morning News Friday evening.

Texas attorney general: Democrats 'far more dangerous' than nuclear-armed Kim Jong Un

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (R) warned Republicans this week that President Barack Obama's administration and some Democrats in Texas were "far more dangerous" than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has reportedly threatened to blow up Austin with nuclear weapons.

At a Monday meeting of the McLennan County Republican Club in Waco, Abbott said the president would be jeopardizing the Second Amendment rights of Americans if he signed a United Nations arms treaty that is designed to regulate the sell of military weapons like tanks, aircraft, missiles and small arms.

The Jobless Trap  by Paul Krugman NYTimes

F.D.R. told us that the only thing we had to fear was fear itself. But when future historians look back at our monstrously failed response to economic depression, they probably won't blame fear, per se. Instead, they'll castigate our leaders for fearing the wrong things.

The 2013 Texas Legislative session is currently going on and the stakes are high with regard to whether our state will move forward to a green, sustainable future or will sink further into the death trap of a fossil fuel based economy and politics. Texas environmentalists are working hard to get ecologically good bills passed, as well as killing those that will severely compromise our state's, our nation's and our planet's future. One sure way to ensure success is for progressives to write letters to our state reps and senators, demanding that they support the bills we want and nix those we oppose.
