Breaking News from Austin: A Deafening Roar for Medicaid Expansion |
This morning, volunteers with Progress Texas and the Texas Organizing Project rallied outside Governor Perry's office demanding he expand Medicaid in Texas to cover hard working Texans. Perry hosted a 10 minute long "roundtable" discussion - where no members of the public were invited - and a joint press conference on Medicaid expansion with Senators John Cornyn & Ted Cruz, along with other Texas Tea Party members. Texans came from across the state to make it known that we need health care, and we need it now - check out our Facebook photos from the rally. http://progresstexas.org/blog/deafening-roar-medicaid-expansion |
Hillary Clinton's first paid speech will be in Dallas in April ! |
Hillary Clinton left the State Department nearly two months ago, but she still needs a staff to keep up with the considerable business of being Hillary Clinton. A half-dozen people now work for the former secretary of state and Democratic presidential candidate in a tiny corporate space on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, in what is called her "transition office." read on here |
The NRA Won't Like This Jim Carrey Anti-Gun Music Video |
Comedian Jim Carrey, who supports gun control, will probably earn the ire of the National Rifle Association by starring in a satirical Funny or Die video that spoofs firearms enthusiasts like the late Charlton Heston, the NRA's former spokesman.

Stop H.B. 3520 from renaming part of US 75, Central Expressway in Dallas, after George W. Bush. |
Texas State Representative Dan Branch has introduced House Bill 3520, which would rename 7 miles of US 75, or Central Expressway, in honor of George W. Bush. Central is the main artery from downtown Dallas to the suburbs, named after the former railroad line that ran between downtown and historic Deep Ellum. To rename this historic stretch of road after a president who has done little if anything significant for this city ignores our local history and compromises our integrity. Bush may live here now, but he is not a native Texan, much less a native Dallasite. That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org to the Texas State House, which says: Stop H.B. 3520 from renaming part of US 75, Central Expressway in Dallas, after George W. Bush. Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends. *** sign now There are currently 17,764 signatures and need 20k

Little Free Libraries Popping Up in Texas |
A neighborhood phenomenon shows - once more - how books inspire people to do creative things. Started in 2009, a little nonprofit effort from Wisconsin is spreading across the world. Little Free Libraries are small post-top boxes that are placed on front lawns and at store fronts and street corners. In the spirit of sharing a good book, library stewards fill the box with books that are available to anyone to borrow, and return at any time. Borrowers may add a favorite book that they would like to share. WFAA featured a Fort Worth library box, you can read the story, or watch the video here . |
Rick Perry Needs a Refresher on How Texas Feels About Marriage |
Marriage equality is ascendant, you may have heard. But Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas), for one, believes the question of who can and cannot marry is a settled issue in his state. "In Texas, it is fairly clear about where this state stands on that issue," Perry told the Dallas Morning News on Tuesday. "As recently as a constitutional amendment that passed-I believe, with 76 percent of the vote. The people of the state of Texas, myself included, believe marriage is between one man and one woman." But Perry is, like many opponents of same-sex marriage, relying on some fairly dusty data sets. The constitutional amendment he's referring to passed in 2005 (it's 2013 now) and it banned same-sex civil unions in addition to same-sex marriages. Texans were really opposed to marriage equality then. James Henson and Joshua Blank of the Texas Politics Project have been paying a bit more attention to the numbers recently, though, and noticed a trend

Maddow shows incredible photos from explosive Texas 'fracking' accident |
On Thursday night's edition of "The Rachel Maddow Show," host Rachel Maddow discussed a recent accident in a Texas "fracking" site and showed photos of the scene. "Oil and gas workers were 'fracking' in Hemphill County, Texas," Maddow said. "That is, they were forcing water and other chemicals through a pipe down into the ground at very high pressure to get at oil they otherwise couldn't get at. But in this case, something went wrong." read and watch |

| By PAUL KRUGMAN | Modern movement conservatism, which transformed the G.O.P. from the moderate party of Dwight Eisenhower into the radical right-wing organization we see today, was largely born in California. The Golden State, even more than the South, created today's religious conservatism; it elected Ronald Reagan governor; it's where the tax revolt of the 1970s began. But that was then. In the decades since, the state has grown ever more liberal, thanks in large part to an ever-growing nonwhite share of the electorate.
