Texas bans shooting immigrants from helicopters |
Officials in Texas announced on Thursday that State Troopers would no longer be allowed to open fire on suspects from helicopters after the recent killing of two immigrants. While announcing the new policy, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw insisted that the ban on aerial shootings had nothing to do with the October 2012 death of two Guatemalan immigrants, who were gunned down by troopers in helicopter while they were hiding in the back of a speeding pickup truck near La Joya. read on |

Some Texas Democrats seek regulations for gun shows in Fort Worth |
FORT WORTH, Texas - There's a new push to add regulations on gun shows held at city facilities. As elected officials in Congress and the state Legislature consider whether to place additional restrictions on gun purchases, a local group is pressing for change at gun shows held on city property such as the Will Rogers Center. The Tarrant County Democratic Party's executive committee is asking the city to make three key changes at guns shows held on city property: allow only licensed sellers there, require background checks for all gun sales there and require a seven-day waiting period for all gun sales made there. Contemporary American politics cannot be understood apart from the North-South divide in the U.S., as I and others have argued. Neither can contemporary American economic debates. The real choice facing America in the 21st century is the same one that faced it in the 19th and 20th centuries - Northernomics or Southernomics? read on |
Getting Texas to Go Democratic Won't Be Easy |
The 2012 presidential race in Texas might as well have been in Mexico, so little did the Democrats campaign for the state's 38 electoral votes. Yet during a fund-raising swing on a sweltering July day, President Obama let a political secret out of the bag for his rich donors. "You're not considered one of the battleground states," he said, "although that's going to be changing soon." read on |

| Sequester of Fools By PAUL KRUGMAN | They're baaack! Just about two years ago, Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, the co-chairmen of the late unlamented debt commission, warned us to expect a terrible fiscal crisis within, um, two years unless we adopted their plan. The crisis hasn't materialized, but they're nonetheless back with a new version. And, in case you're interested, after last year's election - in which American voters made it clear that they want to preserve the social safety net while raising taxes on the rich - the famous fomenters of fiscal fear have moved to the right, calling for even less revenue and even more spending cuts. read on

Daily Show Correspondent Takes On Texas Secessionists Who Equate Lincoln With Hitler | The Daily Show's Jessica Williams traveled to Texas this week to see how the people of that state are coping with President Obama's second term. While she may not have found a representative sample of Texans, she did come across a handful of citizens fighting against the "tyranny" of the federal government and holding out for the day Texas can secede from the Union once and for all.
