How the Texas 1% Live |
From time to time, I am asked to address one of the several hundred women's clubs that dot the urban landscape near me. The point is to provide a program for their meetings that, otherwise, would consist mostly of drinking coffee and eating sweetmeats and gossiping.
The other morning, I was invited to review two new biographies of Dwight Eisenhower for a particular chapter of a self-proclaimed patriotic women's group, founded in the certainty that each of them had descended from some individual who was in some way augustly connected to one of our nation's several antique and noble wars. It was quite an experience. READ Jim Hightower | The GOP's Pitch-Perfect Platform Jim Hightower, Op-Ed: Here's some unexpected news. It comes from what purports to be an official document of the National Republican Party. And - wow - the policy positions it contains show that party leaders really are serious about coming to their senses and rejecting the far-right wackiness that has stained their recent electoral campaigns. Right at the top, this 18-page manifesto proclaims that, "Our government was created by the people for all the people, and it must serve no less a purpose." READ |

Seizing the Airwaves |
Community-driven radio has always played a significant role in winning the hearts and minds of people in movements for social change, economic justice and human rights. But the history of dramatic media consolidation in this country has made it extraordinarily difficult for all but an elite few to control their own media. Today, after years of activism, a new law on low-power FM (LPFM) radio is paving the way for the greatest expansion of FM radio in decades. This is a huge victory for media justice: Communities across the U.S. now have the power to transform the media landscape and fight corporate media owned and controlled by the 1 Percent. It's an unprecedented opportunity for historically marginalized communities of color, immigrant and low-income folks to own and operate their own means of media production and infrastructure-through their own LPFM radio station. read on Support Progressive Talk Radio, Listen To WeAct Radio Since we're so disgusted with most corporate media, we take it as part of the C&L mission to plug progressive media, especially when it's independently owned. If you still don't know about We Act Radio, Washington DC's progressive station, you should. After all, we have this station right in the heart of our nation's capital that's on our side, and influences policy every day. (I happen to believe progressive talk radio is even more important than TV.) It's owned by progressive fighters Alex Lawson, Cliff Schecter and Kymone Freeman. There are great shows, from David Shuster's Take Action News to Joshua Holland's AlterNet Radio Hour and Moms Rising, Sam Seder, Angie Coiro, and Nicole Sandler. All great stuff! listen here http://www.weactradio.com/ 1480 AM in Washington |

A PLACE AT THE TABLE - Magnolia Hunger is not just a third world problem. Forty-nine million people in the U.S.-one in four children-don't know where their next meal is coming from. Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine this issue through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her kids; Rosie, a fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford. | Dwindling Deficit Disorder by Paul Krugman |
For three years and more, policy debate in Washington has been dominated by warnings about the dangers of budget deficits. A few lonely economists have tried from the beginning to point out that this fixation is all wrong, that deficit spending is actually appropriate in a depressed economy. But even though the deficit scolds have been wrong about everything so far - where are the soaring interest rates we were promised? - protests that we are having the wrong conversation have consistently fallen on deaf ears.

Keeping Creationism Out of Public Schools | Zack Kopplin, a 19-year-old Rice University student waging a national campaign in defense of science education, spoke with Bill Moyers about his opposition to laws that make it easier to teach creationism in public schools. Kopplin's crusade began in 2008 when his home state passed the Louisiana Science Education Act. The law permitted public schools to teach their students that life, the world and everything in it may have been created by a supernatural being, and that despite a lack of evidence, this view was a scientifically valid alternative to biological evolution. read and watch
