Dear nancy, Good Afternoon!
Wow --there is lots going on ! Remember most of the Democratic events are open to everyone in North Texas - if you work near the Mid Cities Democrats meeting /dinner location and it would be convenient for you to go there after work you are welcome to attend even if you don't live there !
Don't let the geographic designations keep you from going! Get busy support Lon Burman's Freedom to marry bill , maybe get on the bus to Austin for immigration reform, tell Cruz to support Medicare and attend some great local screenings !
We can do this !
Thanks, Nancy Cunningham

Democracy Now |
During his State of the Union Tuesday, President Obama announced the formation of a new bipartisan commission to fix the nation's broken voting system. In the audience was 102-year-old Desiline Victor who waited for hours to cast her ballot in the last election. Victor lives in Florida, where an estimated 200,000 voters failed to vote after becoming frustrated by the long lines. We speak to NAACP President Benjamin Jealous about how long lines is just one of many forms of voter suppression that the commission needs to address. Watch/Listen/Read The fire that killed former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner on Tuesday has drawn comparisons to the deadly 1993 raid on the Branch Davidian complex in Waco, Texas, and the 1985 police bombing of the MOVE headquarters in Philadelphia. In Waco, federal agents denied for years they had used incendiary tear gas after a fire killed 76 people inside the compound. We speak to former Seattle police chief Norm Stamper and Radley Balko, author of the forthcoming book, "Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces." Watch/Listen/Read The ability of the U.S. government to jail people without charge or trial is now back in court. A group of reporters, scholars and activists are suing the Obama administration over the controversial provision in the National Defense Authorization Act, saying it could allow for the indefinite detention of journalists and others who interact with certain groups. On Wednesday, the Justice Department asked an appeals court to reverse a judge's earlier decision blocking indefinite detention, saying the ruling would hamper its ability to fight terrorism. On the same day, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker and activist Michael Moore and the case's lead plaintiff, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges, took part in a panel featuring some of those who were in the courtroom opposing the NDAA. We air excerpts of their remarks. Watch/Listen/Read |
Meet the Texas GOPer Who's Bringing Ted Nugent to Obama's SOTU |
Nugent in the past has threatened to kill President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and California Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer. At some point we're going to have to consider Texas a failed state. There should be a limit to just how dumb your representatives can be before it runs afoul of some trigger mechanism, somewhere, after which all the people who voted for that particular moron are stripped from voting again until they satisfactorily re-complete the fourth grade-but one problem with that, I suppose, is that we'd end up with the most unstable, heavily armed group of mustachioed fourth graders to ever grace our poorly funded public schools, and nobody wants to see that. North Texas State Rep. Lon Burnam Files HB 1300 Providing for the Freedom to Marry in Texas | State Rep. Lon Burnam Files HB 1300 Providing for the Freedom to Marry in Texas Austin, Texas (February 14, 2013) - In a Valentine's Day gift to all Texans, State Representative Lon Burnam (D-90) today filed legislation [HB 1300] to permit same-gender couples in Texas the freedom to marry. The legislation would remove revisions made to the state's Family Code in 2003 that prohibit the recognition of marriages between two people of the same gender, either performed in Texas or in other states. If enacted, HB 1300 would provide important legal protections for same-gender couples, including property rights, homestead rights, child custody and support, adoption, intestate succession, probate transfers, group insurance for state employees, and workers' compensation benefits.

Why I Got Arrested at the White House to Stop the Tar Sands Pipeline Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. |
On Sunday, Natural Resources Defense Council and Waterkeeper Alliance will join 350.org,Sierra Club and many other partners in holding the Forward on Climate Rally in Washington, D.C. This will be the largest climate rally in American history, with tens of thousands of people expected. From rejecting the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline to limiting carbon pollution from our nation's dirty power plants, President Barack Obama's legacy will rest squarely on his response, resolve, and leadership in solving the climate crisis. READ Forty-eight people, including civil rights leader Julian Bond and NASA climate scientist James Hansen, were arrested Wednesday in front of the White House as part of an ongoing protest calling on the Obama administration to reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. The action came before a rally planned for Sunday on Washington's National Mall, which organizers have dubbed "the largest climate rally in history." We speak to Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune, who was arrested in the first act of civil disobedience in the organization's 120-year history. LET'S STOP "PERRY NO CARE" |
Carol shares her story and her struggle with COPD in this video Last week, the Texas Organizing Project invited Rick Perry to a Legislative Briefing that was held this past Saturday in Austin. To no surprise, Rick Perry was a no show. Had he attended, the Governor would have had a chance to hear from over 100 active community leaders who know first hand what his Perry No Care policies and rejection of $78 Billion in Health Care funding means to hardworking Texans. He would have heard from hardworking Texans like Carol Alexander, who suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease but cannot afford treatment. Carol's job, like so many in Texas, does not provide health care insurance. Please stand with our TOP community leaders who are demanding action now by clicking here to donate $5 or $10. This will help us keep the heat on the Governor and his Perry No Care policies. If you can't donate please sign our petition demanding action now! https://www.facebook.com/perrynocare http://www.organizetexas.org/ |

The State of the Union address was not, I'm sorry to say, very interesting. True, the president offered many good ideas. But we already know that almost none of those ideas will make it past a hostile House of Representatives. | read on |
