President Obama's nominee to run the CIA, John Brennan, forcefully defended Obama's counterterrorism policies, including the increased use of armed drones and the targeted killings of American citizens during his confirmation hearing Thursday. We speak with Jeremy Scahill, author of the forthcoming book, Dirty Wars. Watch/Listen/Read Sterling College in Vermont announced on Tuesday it will soon become the third college in the United States to divest its endowment from 200 fossil fuel companies identified by the environmental group 350.org. Unity College in Maine and Hampshire College in Massachusetts were the first two schools to divest. Divestment campaigns are ongoing on more than 200 other campuses. We're joined by Bill McKibben of 350.org, who is helping to organize a Presidents' Day rally against the Keystone XL pipeline later this month, one he predicts will be the "biggest climate rally probably ever" in the United States. Watch/Listen/Read Born on Feb. 4, 1913, today would have been Rosa Parks' 100th birthday. On Dec. 1, 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her act of resistance led to a 13-month boycott of the Montgomery bus system that would help spark the civil rights movement. Today we spend the hour looking at Rosa Parks' life with historian Jeanne Theoharis, author of the new book, The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks. Often described as a tired seamstress, no troublemaker, Parks was in fact a dedicated civil rights activist involved with the movement long before and after her historic action on the Montgomery bus. "Here we have, in many ways, one of the most famous Americans of the 20th century, and yet treated just like a sort of children's book hero," Theoharis says. "We diminish her legacy by making it about a single day, a single act, as opposed to the rich and lifelong history of resistance that was actually who Rosa Parks was." We also air audio of Rosa Parks in her own words. In the midst of the boycott in April of 1956, she spoke to Pacifica Radio about the action she took. Watch/Listen/Read |
An Insider's View of the Progressive Talk Radio Devolution |
As an independent progressive and 40-year radio veteran, I'm sorry to report that heroic efforts over the past ten years to build a national radio presence for progressives and Democrats seem to have reached a critical turning point. With the recent loss of key AM outlets in Portland, Seattle and Detroit, the progressive talk format no longer enjoys national coverage, which in turn threatens the financial viability of the syndicated programs hosted by Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz, Randi Rhodes, Mike Malloy, Bill Press and Norman Goldman.

Climate Change Bus Rally buses from Dallas to DC -Get aboard ! |
There is a Climate Change/Anti-Keystone rally on Sunday, February 17th. It is billed to be the LARGEST tar sands/eco rally ever to get Obama to deny the northern segment of Keystone, and send a message that if he is serious about the environment and climate change as noted in his inaugural speech-- he needs to deny the Keystone northern segment now. This is also our opportunity send a message that Texas needs protection not only from Keystone, abut other tar sands pipelines like the Seaway tar sands pipeline and its additional twin line that would run near Dallas down south through Houston neighborhoods. Join the masses in DC who believe something needs to done about Climate Change and the tar sands pipelines like Keystone and Seaway that threaten the U.S., Texas, and our DFW area. We will leave from Austin, Dallas, and Tyler via charter bus. For more details, call Rita Beving now or email her at 214.557.2271. Space is limited. find out more www.DallasSierraClub.org. |

| High Time for Hemp by Jim Hightower |
Four years ago, Michelle Obama picked up a shovel to make a powerful symbolic statement about America's food and farm future: She turned a patch of White House lawn into a working organic garden. I'm guessing that now, as she begins another four years in the people's mansion, the First Lady is asking herself: "What's next? What can I do this time around to plant a crop of common sense in our country's political soil that will link America's farmers, consumers, environment, and grassroots economy into one big harvest of common good?" read on

What We Need Is a Big March in Dallas |
The Jobs with Justice meeting on February 13 will take up the possibility of organizing a major march for justice in Dallas. Join us at 7 PM at 2218 E Main in Grand Prairie. If it were organized right, a major march would boost the progressive causes in North Texas. If organizations could come together in a mutually respectful way, everybody could be helped. We need separate contingents based on people's various causes. The overall march committee could agree on some fundamental rules, then leave it to the various organizations to build their own sections of and march behind their own banners. There is no need for all progressives to agree on everything if they have separate contingents. What's been wrong? If this idea interests you, let me know. Much better, attend the Jobs with Justice meeting 7 PM Wednesday, February 13, at 2218 E Main in Grand Prairie. love & solidarity Gene Lantz, labordallas@sbcglobal.net |
BizVizz : new App helps you know history corporation profiles who they give to etc. |
Three months ago, 'As Goes Janesville' premiered as part of PBS's Independent Lens series. The film explores the struggle of Janesville, Wisconsin since the economy began its nosedive in 2008. The producers of the film, 371 Productions, will launch on February 4th (in conjunction with the documentary's rebroadcast) BizVizz, "a transmedia component of the As Goes Janesville project." Both a website and an app, BizVizz allows you to take a picture of a company's logo, and then it tells you who makes the product, what percentage corporate tax the company pays (in relation to the standard 35% corporate tax it should pay), to which party it has decided to give political contributions to, how it compares to competitors in its industry, its profits, and the subsidies it has received form the government. The app allows you to share the information across Twitter and Facebook, and sends you messages about how to get involved with corporate accountability campaigns and projects. It is certainly an interesting strategy to release the app four months after the film's premiere, but as people download the app and see that a film inspired it, it might help sustain 'As Goes Janesville's' buzz over a longer period of time. For those who would like to fact-check, and potentially make purchasing decisions based on, how companies behave when it comes to corporate and social responsibility, both the film and app are good places to start. check it out and download it to you iPhone or iPad today https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bizvizz/id595785692?mt=8

| The Ignorance Caucus By PAUL KRUGMAN |
Last week Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, gave what his office told us would be a major policy speech. And we should be grateful for the heads-up about the speech's majorness. Otherwise, a read of the speech might have suggested that he was offering nothing more than a meager, warmed-over selection of stale ideas. read on

Texas to revisit open carry for handguns | Bryan Hull hopes that the Ruger LC9 pistol holstered on his hip sends a clear message. He's not hiding the fact that he is armed and ready to protect himself. "With conceal carry, all I can do is react when someone has begun an attack," said Hull, president and founding director of the Oklahoma Open Carry Association. "With open carry, I may be able to stop an attack." Hull was among those who encouraged Oklahoma legislators to pass a law last year that lets those who are licensed to have concealed handguns openly carry their firearms. Read more here |

Was Hostess' Death a Murder, Suicide or Natural Causes? | In the years leading up to the collapse of Hostess - baker of Wonder Bread, Twinkies and Ding Dongs - it wouldn't have required a peek at the company's closely held books to figure out it was in trouble. Ask the guys who baked the snack cakes and bread. Ask the drivers who hauled them to distribution points, grocery stores, gas stations. They'd say Hostess had been on life support. The plug finally got pulled. Paul Storz, a Teamster driver, would have told you his old beater of a rig was bleeding oil the way Hostess hemorrhaged red ink in net losses for each of the two full years between this bankruptcy and the last one in 2009. It wasn't just his truck. "It probably looked li... more >>
