Democracy Now |
With less than 40 days to go before the 2012 presidential election, poet and activist Alice Walker reads her new poem, "Democratic Womanism," and discusses her thoughts on President Obama's legacy, including his use of drone strikes. Watch/Listen/Read Democracy Now! premieres The United States of ALEC, a special report by legendary journalist Bill Moyers on how the secretive American Legislative Exchange Council has helped corporate America propose and even draft legislation for states across the country. ALEC brings together major U.S. corporations and right-wing legislators to craft and vote on "model" bills behind closed doors. It has come under increasing scrutiny for its role in promoting "stand your ground" gun laws, voter suppression bills, union-busting policies and other controversial legislation. Although billing itself as a "nonpartisan public-private partnership," ALEC is actually a national network of state politicians and powerful corporations principally concerned with increasing corporate profits without public scrutiny. Moyers' special will air this weekend on Moyers & Company, but first airs on Democracy Now! today. The United States of ALEC is a collaboration between Okapi Productions, LLC and the Schumann Media Center. Watch/Listen/Read |
"Moyers & Company" ALEC Documentary |
Bill Moyers examined the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) this weekend on his weekly television show "Moyers & Company." The show entitled "The United States of ALEC" will highlight the work of the Madison-based Center for Media and Democracy and its many allies in the effort to expose ALEC's inner workings. ALEC brings together major American corporations and right-wing legislators to craft and vote on "model" bills behind closed doors. These bills include extreme gun laws, like ratifying Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, as well as pre-approving union-busting legislation, Arizona style anti-immigrant legislation and voter suppression laws that have sparked lawsuits across the nation. The bills are later introduced in state houses across the nation with no mention of their ALEC roots or the role global corporations had in voting on them or crafting them. The organization's agenda is so extreme that in the last few months, 40 major U.S. companies, including Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola, Kraft, and General Motors, have severed ties with ALEC. The Courage to Hope: How I Stood Up to the Politics of Fear By Shirley Sherrod List Price: $24.99 Price: $15.02 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours BUY HERE Product Description In the summer of 2010, Shirley Sherrod was catapulted into a media storm that blew apart her life and her job doing what she'd done for decades: helping poor, hardworking people live the American dream. She was a lifelong activist who served as Georgia's first black director of rural development. A right-wing blogger, the now late Andrew Breitbart, disseminated a video clip of a speech Sherrod had given to the Georgia NAACP, intending to make her an example of "reverse racism." The right-wing media ramped up the outrage, and before Sherrod had a chance to defend herself, the Obama administration demanded her resignation. Then, after hearing from Sherrod herself and learning the entire truth of what she said in that speech, the administration tried to backtrack. As public officials and media professionals admitted to being duped and apologized for their rush to judgment, Sherrod found herself the subject of a teachable moment. |

| The real Referendum by Paul Krugman for NY Times |
| Republicans came into this campaign believing that it would be a referendum on President Obama, and that still-high unemployment would hand them victory on a silver platter. But given the usual caveats - a month can be a long time in politics, it's not over until the votes are actually counted, and so on - it doesn't seem to be turning out that way. read on |

No Shows: Why So Few Texans Bother to Votet | I WAS SITTING IN A COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER in the Houston suburb of Alief trying to get a glimpse of the state's future. Alief is a mostly working-class neighborhood on the western rim of the city. Twenty years ago, Alief was a rural rice-farming community touted as the next big suburb; today it has grown into one of the most racially diverse areas in the state, if not the country. More than 70 percent of Alief's residents are minorities. The area has a huge Latino population as well as a large Vietnamese community. Alief's strip malls are dotted with businesses advertising in Spanish, Vietnamese, Thai and even Arabic. Yet Alief is represented in government, almost entirely, by white Republicans. read on

Right now, 9 protesters from the Tar Sands Blockade are sitting in the trees of Winnsboro, East Texas, where they have stopped construction on the Southern leg of Keystone XL for days running. TransCanada has responded with recklessness and bullying -- encouraging police to pepperspray and tase handcuffed protesters, and felling trees just feet from the treesit. There is no excuse for endangering the safety of nonviolent protesters. None. Please call TransCanada and tell them to respect the safety of our friends in Texas. more on how you can join/support other North Texans http://www.facebook.com/TarSandsBlockade What Fascism Looks Like: TransCanada and Brutality in East Texas Also read this

Great call to get involved with links ! | I received this from Nancy and I thought it was a great example how to reach out an involve folks on your contact list and on Facebook My dear friends, relatives, and acquaintances, I made 10 calls while my grandson was in piano lesson for 30 min. I have been doing my small part to support the Democrats and specially President Obama and VP Joe Biden to be reelected by using a FABULOUS COMPUTERIZED TOOL. You can call any time, anywhere you have signal, a computer and a phone, to any state. I mostly have devoted my calls to Florida (as I used to live there for a few years and am fluent in Spanish). It is such a thrill to reach others who are supporting the Obama campaign too and to help people understand the issues and the barriers to voting that could occur. I encourage ALL OF MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES TO ALSO DO YOUR PART. Just set up an account and go: www.Dashboard.barackobama.com You can call any state you wish and the data is saved on the program and you get positive reinforcement for your efforts like: "Way to Go, Keep calling!" I just tell myself, how would I feel if for some WTF reason he LOST, and I had not done all I could've done to get him elected.... let's don't go there.....the time is now to get off our duffs and get to work! Be the Change that You've been waiting for,
