Democracy Now |
On the eve of the first presidential debate, President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are being urged to address the problem of gun violence. Wednesday's debate is taking place less than 10 miles from the site of the Columbine school shooting and 15 miles from the Aurora theater where 12 people were killed in July. At the site of the 2007 massacre that left 32 people dead at Virginia Tech, we're joined by Colin Goddard, who survived the attack with four gunshot wounds. Goddard recounts his survival of the massacre and his backing of a campaign with fellow victims for presidential candidates to address gun violence. Watch/Listen/Read Beginning today, the Supreme Court's new term is expected to see cases on a number of important and highly contentious issues. The last session was defined by a single case, the Affordable Care Act, President Obama's signature bill, which was upheld by a 5-4 vote and cleared the way for the largest revamp of America's healthcare system since the 1960s. In the new term, the court is expected to hear cases on a number of important and highly contentious issues ranging from affirmative action and same-sex marriage to corporate accountability for international human rights violations and voting rights. We're joined by Nan Aron, president of Alliance for Justice. Watch/Listen/Read |

| Independent Political Apps For the Rebel Voter In Your Life |
Organic Liberty (Free) This political app collects data on all candidates for the upcoming election. Find out who is running for State Representative in your town, or who is running for president (not that you shouldn't already know that). Each candidate is listed without party affiliation. You can research who you might vote for without worrying about which side they are on. The candidates' contact information and social media links are listed with their names. Add your favorites and you the app will remind you who you chose to vote for on election day. The Independent (Free) This media publication is actually from the UK, but it is still a comprehensive source for independent news. Without taking itself too serious, The Independent offers news on current events, sports, art, and of course, daily news. Read about environmental issues that aren't talked about in American media much and learn more about the world through the independent lens (not the PBS television show). The app is free to download, but subscriptions cost $13.99 per month. Real Clear Politics for iPad (Free) This app is a news feeder from the website of the official media organization. Realclearpolitics.com is one of the more popular Independent party political websites. This app provides daily updates on world news, polling data, commentary, videos and more. If you are tired of the same old reports on the same two people, check out this app to find something a little bit different. Comedy Central's Indecision Election Companion (Free) This app is not affiliated with the Independent party, but it is a humorous way to read up on how lame the two-party system has gotten. It leans to the left, but tries to stay in the middle for the most part. There are plenty of jokes at President Obama's expense to be had in this app. There is no video content, but you will be delivered a healthy dose of funny images, ironic observations and satirical statements on the nature of politics. If anyone had doubts about the madness that has spread through a large part of the American political spectrum, the reaction to Friday's better-than expected report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics should have settled the issue. For the immediate response of many on the right - and we're not just talking fringe figures - was to cry conspiracy.
Leading the charge of what were quickly dubbed the "B.L.S. truthers" was none other than Jack Welch, the former chairman of General Electric, who posted an assertion on Twitter that the books had been cooked to help President Obama's re-election campaign. His claim was quickly picked up by right-wing pundits and media personalities. read on | |

National Coming Out Day Texas | October 11th is National Coming Out Day. Since 1988, National Coming Out Day has been a tool to increase the visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community. This year Equality Texas has a challenge for you: between now and October 11th we want you to come out as LGBT, or an LGBT ally, to your members of the Texas Legislature. Harvey Milk said that coming out has the power to "break down the myths, [and] destroy the lies and distortions." And that is precisely what we need to happen in the Texas Legislature. It's easier than you think: Step 1: Go to www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us and look up your state representative and state senator. Step 2: Call them and tell them that as a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender Texan, or as an ally to the LGBT community, you want them to support LGBT equality legislation. Step 3: Tell your friends to do the same. Step 4: Let us know how your call went by e-mailing us at comingout@equalitytexas.org There's more information available at EqualityTexas.org, including profile and banner pics for social media

Presidential Debates 52 Years Later | Last week was the first debate between President Obama and Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney. You can watch the debate live on YouTube through the YouTube Politics channel. That is certainly a much different way to watch the debate compared to how the first televised Presidential debate between Kennedy and Nixon was watched in 1960. The Kennedy v. Nixon video is embedded below.

Texas Rep. Barton continues push for online poker legalization h.html#storylink=cpy#storylink=cpy | Anti-gambling forces called on U.S. Rep. Joe Barton Thursday to throw in the cards on his plan to legalize online poker. Opponents of the proposal fear that Barton's controversial bill -- which has lingered in the U.S. House for more than a year -- may find movement now that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has sought to push the measure forward in the waning days of this congressional session. And they worry that legalizing online poker could lead to further expansion of gambling in Texas. read on

Shows will be broadcast "live" on Thursdays from 1:00 to 1:30pm starting on October 4th; the recorded show will be available on PDA Community - Stop Voter Suppression. Send your questions to radio@pdamerica.org or call-in. PDA Launches BlogTalk Radio Show Launch Schedule October 11th Democracy Restoration - Restoring the Vote to Ex-Offenders October 18th Fighting Voter Suppression Legislation at the State and Federal Level PDA Deputy Field Director, Andrea Miller, will handle hosting and production duties along with Greg Peterson and Terence Dicks; we want to educate and activate our membership on this critical issue. Voter suppression is sweeping this country like a hurricane, only five (5) states did not introduce voter suppression laws. We must make sure that our newly registered voters are able to cast their vote along with seniors, people of color, students and women (all groups that have been targeted by a mass of ALEC-inspired legislation). We can expect the next legislative session will see more laws introduced to further erode registration and ballot access. Go here
