War on Women ? You Betcha ! See Sandra Fluke speak today |
Sandra Fluke Today Free September 24 6:30 to 8 p.m @ Southern Methodist University One day, Sandra Fluke was a law school graduate with interests in reproductive rights and domestic violence - and the next day Rush Limbaugh publicly branded her with a big ole scarlet letter for making a speech before House Democrats supporting the Affordable Care Act. Fluke talked to the House about how access to contraception was essentially a public-health issue, and for her efforts, the always gracious Rush Limbaugh called her a slut. The upshot to this very personal attack was that Fluke took the opportunity to turn the controversy into a national conversation about women's health, reproductive rights and the role the media play in gender disparity. Fluke will make a stop in Dallas to present "Economics and Equality: How Obstacles to Women's Health Care Affect Us All," followed by a panel discussion from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday. The event, which is sponsored by the SMU's Women's and Gender Studies Program, is free and open to the public, and takes place on the third floor of Dallas Hall's McCord Auditorium at 3225 University Blvd. on the SMU campus. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Legislative & Legal Reality of Women's Healthcare in Texas *Monday, September 24 /6:30 - 7:30 p.m. /Fred Herring Recreation Center /191 Civic Civic Lewisville, TX Learn how the lack of funding for the Women's Health Program under the GOP leadership effects health care for uninsured mothers, sisters, wives and daughters in Texas. Meet candidates David Sanchez for US Congress and Gary Brown for Texas State House. |
Ever thought about starting a holiday ? What a great idea - National Voter Registration Day ! Tomorrow ! |
Since early 2011, a bunch of us have been wrestling with a basic question: How do you start a holiday? And by holiday, I mean a holiday that doesn't suck (looking at you Ask a Stupid Question Day). It was around that time that we brainstormed new ideas to get lots of people registered to vote for the 2012 election and we cooked up the idea of National Voter Registration Day. Registering voters is a priority for us because-as trite as it sounds-voting is the basic way that government hears our voices, and confusion over the registration process is one of the largest barriers to participation. In 2008, one of the biggest years for voter registration in history, the US Census estimates that 6 million eligible Americans didn't vote because they missed a voter registration deadline or were unsure how to register. Millions more didn't vote because of registration errors.
It turns out that in the 21st century, when you can do just about anything online (and I do mean anything), our voter registration system is governed by 50 different sets of laws, regulations, and forms. Deadlines vary from locale to locale. There are roughly 3,000 different counties, each with different offices where forms are returned. In the information age, the best method most of us have of getting the word out about impending deadlines is trying to mob the streets with dozens people carrying clipboards.
Enter National Voter Registration Day. We thought a giant day of action could move new volunteers and new organizations into the effort, while providing artists, media, and individual Americans a great excuse to leverage traditional outlets and newer media like Tumblr and Facebook to push people to get registered. Democracy Now |
One year ago today, the state of Georgia executed Troy Anthony Davis for a crime many believe he did not commit. He was put to death on Sept. 21, 2011, despite major doubts about evidence used to convict him of killing police officer Mark MacPhail, including the recantation of seven of the nine non-police witnesses. As the world watched to see whether Davis's final appeal for a stay of execution would be granted by the U.S. Supreme Court, Democracy Now! was the only news outlet to continuously broadcast live from the prison grounds in Jackson, Georgia. During our six-hour special report, we spoke with Davis's supporters and family members who held an all-day vigil, then heard from those who witnessed his death by lethal injection at 11:08 p.m. Watch/Listen/Read "Welcome to Bainport, a taste of the Romney economy." That's the message on one of the banners that greets you at the tent city where we broadcast from in Freeport, Illinois. "Bainport" is an encampment set up by workers who face losing their livelihoods when their workplace closes its doors in November and moves to China, taking 170 jobs with it. The workers' plant, Sensata Technologies, is owned by Bain Capital, the firm co-founded by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Democracy Now! first spoke to the Sensata workers when we met them at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, where they unsuccessfully tried to meet with Romney. Now, they have returned to Freeport and set up a protest camp in a bid to save their jobs. We speak to "Bainport" workers Dot Turner and Cheryl Randecker. Watch/Listen/Read |

Legal Volunteers (attorneys, paralegals, and law students) are needed to: - Staff the 1-866-OUR-VOTE hotline at a call center from August through November (in DC) and in November at locations across the country; and

Grassroots volunteers are also needed to:Monitor polling places in coordination with mobile legal teams. Sign up today for a training and shift based on your location at http://volunteer.866ourvote.org. The Stealth Inequities of School Funding in Texas | How State and Local School Finance Systems Perpetuate Inequitable Student Spending Education has been called the passport to the future. It has been defined as the great equalizer and lauded as being a key to unlocking the American Dream. Yet too many children-often low-income and minority children-are denied access to high-quality education because they attend schools that are underfunded and under-resourced. The sad reality is that gross funding inequities continue to exist in this country, and too often the schools serving students with the greatest needs receive the fewest resources This report tackles the serious issue of public school funding inequity by identifying often-overlooked features of school funding systems that exacerbate inequities in per-pupil spending rather than reduce them. Key findings from the report about student spending in Texas include: * Texas has one of the largest spending gaps between low-poverty and high-poverty districts in the country-a difference of more than $1,100 per pupil, after factoring in differences in costs. * Texas has a regressive distribution of state funding, with a significant amount of general foundation aid provided to the state's lowest-need districts, while failing to bring the highest-need districts up to the level of low-poverty districts. * More than half of all local and state revenue for funding comes from local sources. This dependence on local revenue has a significant impact on funding inequality: The wealthiest districts are able to raise on average almost $3,400 more per pupil than lower-wealth districts from property taxes. * 94 percent of the inequality in local revenues is attributable to property taxes, meaning that Texas's reliance on such taxes is almost entirely responsible for that $3,400 difference. This dependence on local revenue has a significant impact on funding inequality. "Responding to that horrible mass murder in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater, the Regalities say they've begun rummaging through movie-goers' purses to protect us from...well, from what?" Gosh, I feel so much safer now that teenage ticket takers at the Regal chain of movie theaters have been directed by corporate chieftains to search the purses of their female customers. Responding to that horrible mass murder in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater, the Regalites say they've begun rummaging through movie-goers' purses to protect us from...well, from what? read on |

| The Optimism Cure NY Times by Paul Krugman | Mitt Romney is optimistic about optimism. In fact, it's pretty much all he's got. And that fact should make you very pessimistic about his chances of leading an economic recovery. As many people have noticed, Mr. Romney's five-point "economic plan" is very nearly substance-free. It vaguely suggests that he will pursue the same goals Republicans always pursue - weaker environmental protection, lower taxes on the wealthy. But it offers neither specifics nor any indication why returning to George W. Bush's policies would cure a slump that began on Mr. Bush's watch. In his Boca Raton meeting with donors, however, Mr. Romney revealed his real plan, which is to rely on magic. "My own view is," he declared, "if we win on November 6, there will be a great deal of optimism about the future of this country. We'll see capital come back, and we'll see - without actually doing anything - we'll actually get a boost in the economy." read on | |

A Moron's Guide to the Fracking of Dallast | In this week's print edition, staff writer Anna Merlan provides a handy guide to natural-gas drilling debate in Dallas. Read on for a\primer, a glossary of terms, a look at the opponents and supporters and a special fracking board game! Important civic issues have a way of sneaking up on you. They do that, typically, by being so goddamned boring that you ignore them until it's impossible to do otherwise. Garbage, redistricting, municipal judge appointments: Those were just a few of the hotly debated topics that all of us did our best to avoid, right up until the point that "hotly debated" meant City Council members were yelling at each other about racism and staging dramatic walkouts. (Seriously, you should start watching the Wednesday council meetings on public access television. Better than a dozen telenovelas). read on

Dallas Looks at How to Produce Less Trash from NYTimes | If J. R. Ewing can quit smoking and promote solar energy, anything is possible in Dallas, environmental advocates say, even an ambitious plan to have the city recycling nearly all of its garbage by 2040. Expanded coverage of Texas is produced by The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit news organization. To join the conversation about this article, go to texastribune.org. "If Dallas can have a zero-waste plan, any city can," said Zac Trahan, the Dallas program manager at Texas Campaign for the Environment, a group challenging the city's reputation for big oil, big cars and big sprawl. "It can really be a huge opportunity to move toward a more sustainable Texas." read on

Keystone XL breaks ground in Texas |
Early last year, TransCanada started up a pipeline called Keystone with little fuss or fanfare. It runs from Canada to Steele City, Neb., then east to Wood River and Patoka, Ill. And it got all the required permits from the State Department and other agencies. The company's next pipeline, the Keystone XL, followed a different route on the ground - and in the political arena, kicking up controversy. read on
