We turn to a major new exposé on the cover of The Nation magazine called "Mitt Romney's Bailout Bonanza: How He Made Millions from the Rescue of Detroit." Investigative reporter Greg Palast reveals how Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made some $15 million on the auto bailout and that three of Romney's top donors made more than $4 billion for their hedge funds from the bailout. Palast's report is part of a film-in-progress called Romney's Bailout Bonanza. Palast is the author of several books, including recently released New York Times bestseller, Billionaires & Ballot Bandits: How to Steal an Election in 9 Easy Steps. Watch/Listen/Read "The issue is not what separates Romney and Obama, but how much they agree. This hidden consensus has to be exposed," writes Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald about the presidential debates as he criticizes the recent performances of the debate moderators. Greenwald also criticizes the exclusion of third-party candidates. We also speak to George Farah, author of No Debate: How the Republican and Democratic Parties Secretly Control the Presidential Debates. Watch/Listen/Read A standoff is underway in Texas over construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would run oil from the Canadian tar sands fields to U.S. refineries on the Gulf Coast. In a protest now entering its fourth week, dozens of environmental activists working with local Texas landowners have blocked the pipeline's path with tree sits and other nonviolent protests. We speak to Susan Scott, who owns land where the pipeline will run; actress Daryl Hannah, who was arrested there last week and has long been active in protests against the pipeline; and Tar Sands Blockade coalition spokesperson Ron Seifert. Wealthy Texans are big spenders in 2012 elections |
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Texas may not be considered a presidential battleground state, but it's still a leader when it comes to campaign contributions. It's home to the big spenders, the biggest contributors to SuperPacs, the no limits vehicles for political contributions, with four of the nation's top 10 biggest donors from the Lone Star State, according to the latest federal election data, including a 22-year-old student who has already spent $2.8 million of his inheritance promoting libertarian candidates. read on |

SAN ANTONIO - For Tira Starr, an eighth grader at Anson Jones Middle School, the plastic nametag hanging around her neck that she has decorated with a smiley face and a purple bat sticker offers a way to reflect her personal flair. For administrators, it is something else entirely: a device that lets them use radio frequency technology - with scanners tucked behind walls and ceilings - to track her whereabouts. read on |

Transparency in Texas: Dallas Suburbs Lead in Attempts to Deny Public Information Requests |
Among the state's biggest cities, several sprawling Dallas-area suburbs tallied the highest rate of requests to Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott last year to keep government information secret, according to a recent examination by the Center for Public Integrity. The probe examined the number of attempts by the 20 largest Texas cities to block public requests for information in 2011, then looked at how those numbers stacked up for each city, according to the rate of requests per 100,000 population. The "winners" were not the state's biggest cities. READ |
