Democracy Now |
We speak with Tom Hayden, principal author of the Port Huron Statement 50 years ago, the founding document of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). The Statement advocated for participatory democracy and helped launch the student movement of the 1960s. The youth-led movement changed the very language of politics, and its impact is still being felt today. Watch/Listen/Read Lawmakers in Connecticut have given final approval to a measure that would repeal the state's death penalty for future convictions. The bill now goes to Gov. Dannel Malloy, who's pledged to sign it into law. Connecticut would become the fifth state in five years to abolish the death penalty and the 17th state overall, moving activists closer to the 26 states needed to bring a challenge to the Supreme Court. We speak with NAACP President Ben Jealous. Watch/Listen/Read |

| Commentary: Time for Texas to end the death penalty by Bob Ray Sanders The Fort Worth Star-Telegram | Two events -- one in the Connecticut Senate chamber, the other in a Dallas courtroom -- helped once again to focus attention on two of the nation's most glaring flaws: wrongful convictions and capital punishment. In Dallas, three more men were exonerated for crimes they did not commit, bringing to 30 the total number of exonerations in Dallas County since 2001. One of the men had been sentenced to 99 years in prison for a 1994 violent purse snatching involving a 79-year-old woman. read on |

Diamond Dick: The Tulsa Race Riots of 1921 | Black Wall Street is thriving in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921. One fateful day, an African American shoe shiner, Dick Rowland, trips and falls against a white female elevator operator, Sarah Page. Rumors of rape and an arrest ensue. Dick is branded as "Diamond Dick" and the white owned newspaper calls for a lynching. White mobs are confronted by African American veterans of WW I. Shots are fired. White mobs attack and burn Black Wall Street. Forty eight hours of rampage ensue with aerial attacks and machine guns. The body count is up to 300 dead when the National Guard arrives. African Americans are rounded up into internment camps. The Tulsa Race Riots are buried in history in unmarked graves like many of the victims. http://www.projectxtheatre.com/index.html |

| Europe's Economic Suicide By PAUL KRUGMAN |
On Saturday The Times reported on an apparently growing phenomenon in Europe: "suicide by economic crisis," people taking their own lives in despair over unemployment and business failure. It was a heartbreaking story. But I'm sure I wasn't the only reader, especially among economists, wondering if the larger story isn't so much about individuals as about the apparent determination of European leaders to commit economic suicide for the Continent as a whole. read on

Bully documentary screening locally | Monday Apr 16, 2012 Mockingbird Station 5321 East Mockingbird Lane, Suite 230 DALLAS , TX 75206 * 214-841-4713
Directed by award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, BULLY is a beautifully cinematic, vitally important documentary. Bullying has always been a part of the schoolyard experience. But in the last decade, it has reached epidemic proportions, both in quantity and in the quality of violence. The character-driven film follows five kids and families over the course of a school year - including two families who have lost children to suicide and a 14 year old incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus - probing the effects of bullying on students, teachers, predators and those who watch and do nothing.
