Thanks, Nancy Cunningham northtexasprogressive@gmail.com | Rally for Health Care Reform: Let's Get It Done! | Organizing for America's 'Let's Get It Done' bus has been making its way across the country calling for real health care reform. On Monday, the bus stops in Dallas for a rally with OFA's national executive director, Mitch Stewart and other dignitaries. Stand with fellow Texans this Monday to show your support for the President's reform efforts. Lamar, Dallas, TX 75215 Time: Doors open at 11 a.m., rally starts at noon. Gilley's also can be reached by taking DART light rail to the Cedars station (red and blue lines). Turn left on Belleview and walk approximately one block north on Lamar (i.e. towards downtown). I don't believe it is based on selfishness or malice, but is more likely based on the inability to readily find information about progressive causes as they happen. While websites like the North Texas Progressive go a long way toward addressing this need, I've always believed that TV and radio can help us keep causes and efforts at the front of people's minds. Take the case of the Rainbow Lounge raid in Fort Worth on June 28, 2009. I was scheduled to cover the events of the Million Gay March on that Sunday, as demonstrators marched through a Dallas neighborhood to Lee Park. It was to be an affirmation of unity, with marchers and demonstrators happy and excited about the occasion to stand together for equal rights under the law in their community. The ominous undertone of the gathering soon became apparent to me as people began recounting the events of the night before. A young man named Chad Gibson was badly injured during what police were already erroneously calling a "routine" code inspection. As details and eyewitness accounts were made available that day, AM 1360 KMNY in Dallas--the only progressive talk radio in North Texas--began reporting on the questionable events at the Rainbow, finding and corroborating accounts, conducting interviews, and investigating responsibly. Our own Jack E. Jett Show broke the story live locally that afternoon, a story which has since received tremendous national attention. On the Rational Radio Report (6-9am weekdays) the very next morning we were interviewing the Rainbow's accountant (working that evening and an eyewitness to the entire event), other news organizations in the Metroplex were so slow to pick up on the story that people were saying "Where's the local media coverage on this?" I couldn't help thinking that I and my colleagues at Rational Radio weren't doing a very good job of letting the Metroplex know that there is an alternative to the right-wing corporate media. Our mission is to be part of the progressive information network in North Texas, a conduit between on-line, print and broadcast media for the benefit of all those in need of speading the progressive word, letting people know that there is an alternative way to reach your friends through AM 1360 Rational Radio. We cordially invite you, the North Texas Progressive reader, to join us for a celebration of that very real alternative at the AM 1360 Rational Radio Progress Forum on Saturday, September 19th at the Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway in Dallas for a program which includes nationally-syndicated progressive talk show host Thom Hartmann, activist Cindy Sheehan, bio-fuel pioneer Jes Sprouse, musical performances by Code Red with Tunde Obazee, singer/songwriter David Rovics, local favorites Bob and Sally Ackerman, film makers Nicole Torre and Melissa Roddy, and, just for good measure, author of "Daybreak" and founder of afterdowningstreet.org David Swanson, challenging the former President of the United States to argue the negative to the resolution "George W. Bush should be prosecuted for war crimes" broadcast live at noon on Saturday the 19th. We are the voice of progressive talk in North Texas. We are AM 1360 Rational Radio, "The Talk You've Been Missing." (See flyer below ) | Democracy Now | Glenn Greenwald on CIA Interrogation Probe, Obama and Why the Media Failed on Covering Torture Attorney General Eric Holder has opened an inquiry into CIA torture. On Monday, Holder appointed veteran federal prosecutor John Durham to look into whether CIA interrogators and contractors should be charged for the torture and abuse of foreign prisoners. Holder says he ordered the probe in response to a Justice Department recommendation to reopen nearly a dozen prisoner abuse cases that the Bush administration had closed. Holder says he was further influenced by the 2004 CIA report on the prisoners' torture and abuse, which he released on Monday. Solnit (River of Shadows) reproves civil defense planners, media alarmists and Hollywood directors who insist that disasters produce terrified mobs prone to looting, murder and cannibalism unless controlled by armed force and government expertise. Surveying disasters from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, she shows that the typical response to calamity is spontaneous altruism, self-organization and mutual aid, with neighbors and strangers calmly rescuing, feeding and housing each other. Indeed, the main problem in such emergencies, she contends, is the elite panic of officials who clamp down with National Guardsmen and stifling regulations. Solnit falters when she generalizes her populist brief into an anarchist critique of everyday society that lapses into fuzzy what-ifs and uplifting volunteer testimonials. Still, this vividly written, cogently argued book makes a compelling-and timely-case for the ability of ordinary people to collectively surmount the direst of challenges. A Paradise Built in Hell: Rebecca Solnit on "The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster" Democracy NOW : We speak with author, historian and activist Rebecca Solnit about her latest book that examines Hurricane Katrina and other disasters. A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster chronicles both the crimes of the vigilantes and the powerful during Katrina, as well as the numerous instances of altruism, generosity and courage displayed by the vast majority of people who lived through this catastrophe. There's a growing recognition among everyone from the World Bank to the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff to aid organizations like CARE that focusing on women and girls is the most effective way to fight global poverty and extremism.
