Nancy Cunningham North Texas Progressive http://www.northtexasprogressive.org/ | Senator Edward M. Kennedy 1932-2009 | "Edward M. Kennedy - the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply - died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis Port. We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever. We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all. He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that our best days were still ahead, but it's hard to imagine any of them without him." The play centers on the events of May 17th, 1968, when nine Catholic peace activists, including Father Daniel Berrigan and his brother, the late Father Philip Berrigan, entered a draft board in Catonsville, Maryland, and removed draft files of young men who were about to be sent to Vietnam. They were arrested and then sentenced in a highly publicized trial that galvanized the antiwar movement. We speak to Robbins about the play, which is being staged by his Los Angeles troupe, the Actors' Gang. Listen/Watch/Read Worldwide Tributes Honor Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., is using his first congressional summer break for an ambitious goodwill tour of his home state. The road trip has taken Minnesota's newest senator to 22 different towns, where he's held "complicated" town hall-style forums on health care reform, hit the local hog farms and set up a meet-and-greet booth at the Minnesota State Fair around the corner from the all-you-can-drink-milk display. It's all part of Franken's campaign to "reintroduce himself" to the state, said political science professor and Franken observer Larry Jacobs. The grueling campaign and subsequent legal challenges that gave Franken a razor-thin victory over incumbent Republican Norm Coleman sullied his image, Jacobs said. And since he had to take off for Washington as soon as his victory became official, August is his first chance to re-polish his brand. read on | Townhall with Joe Barton anyone ??? | Monday, August 31st, from 7:00-9:00 PM in the Hill Performance Hall at the Eisemann Center located at 2351 Performance Drive in Richardson. September DCYD Meeting "Youth Organizing Around Healthcare" September 8 (Tuesday) /7 p.m. Zubar /2012 Greenville Avenue /Dallas, Texas 75206 | North Texas Progressive Book Suggestion : Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy | Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy Buy Now This biography delves deeply into Senator Kennedy's nearly half-century legislative career-but it's the personal dramas that prove the most enthralling; tracks are organized such that listeners bored by the politics can click ahead for a quit exit back to Hyannisport, Georgetown, Palm Beach or Chappaquiddick. Skipp Sudduth imbues his narration with feeling, recounting the numerous tragedies (the death of all three of Kennedy's brothers, his son's cancer and subsequent leg amputation, his nephew JFK Jr.'s fatal plane crash and now his own brain tumor) with quiet dignity. Despite the countless trials, this is anything but depressing listening; the resilience and indomitable optimism of the subject himself is well-conveyed by this enjoyable recording. | "Paths to Peace," celebrating the 2009 International Day of Peace | Hello, Texas peace & justice activists ~ Several Dallas-area peace and justice organizations are coming together for a 3-day weekend (Sept 19 - 21) of activities called "Paths to Peace," celebrating the 2009 International Day of Peace. If we want to build a fascist-proof America for the long haul, we must stand up now for everything we believe and everything we are. August, die she must. The town hall freak show is winding down, the media circus is packing the cameras and satellite dishes and hairspray back into the vans, and Congress is soon heading back to the relative safety of Washington. Yet, after all the fuss and bother, they're probably no more or less resolved to pass health care reform than they were back in June, when those first delirious fevers rose like clouds of infectious mosquito nymphs hatched from a thick, overheated carpet of soggy Astroturf. Let's hope they succeed at getting it done. But, win or lose, we're crazy to think that the goon squads formed and trained to instigate this summer's health care wars will pack it in just because the silly season is over. members to take?
