After 20 Years of Filmmaking on US Injustices, Michael Moore Goes to the Source in "Capitalism: A Love Story"
Beginning with the 1989 classic Roger & Me, the Academy Award-winning director Michael Moore says his films "come back to this central core concern, which is the economic system we have is unfair, it's unjust, it's not democratic." With his new film, Capitalism: A Love Story, Moore tackles the financial system and the interchanging circles of Washington politicians and corporate managers that run it. Moore says, "I thought I'd just cut to the chase and propose that we deal with this economic system and try to restructure it in a way that benefits people and not the richest one percent."

Al Franken Reads the 4th Amendment to Justice Department Official
Just in case he wasn't familiar with it, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) decided to read the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution to David Kris, assistant attorney general of the Justice Department's National Security Division, who was testifying to the Senate Judiciary Committee today to urge reauthorization of expiring provisions of the USA Patriot Act.
Franken, who opened by acknowledging that unlike most of his colleagues in the Senate, he's not a lawyer, but according to his research "most Americans aren't lawyers" either, said he'd also done research on the Patriot Act and in particular, the "roving wiretap" provision that allows the FBI to get a warrant to wiretap a an unnamed target and his or her various and changing cell phones, computers and other communication devices.

MSNBC's Maddow emerged as rising star
Variety
One of the biggest winners of last year's presidential election wasn't even running for office. The ubiquitous political analyst-turned-talkshow host Rachel Maddow clearly emerged from MSNBC's wall-to-wall coverage as the network's biggest rising star. For most of 2008, Maddow, 36, provided viewers with a fresh liberal voice as she sparred with Pat Buchanan and filled in for Keith Olbermann. Then, in September, her strategy of doing "whatever they asked me to do" paid off when she was given her own eponymous show. The move paid off in the ratings -- and made Maddow one of the most talked-about women in news.

Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party
by Max Blumenthal by Nation Books
Over the last year, award-winning journalist and videographer Max Blumenthal has been behind some of the most sensational (and funniest) exposes of Republican machinations. Whether it was his revelation that Sarah Palin was "anointed" by a Kenyan priest famous for casting out witches, or his confronting Republican congressional leaders and John McCain's family at the GOP convention about the party's opposition to sex education (and hence, the rise in teen pregnancies like that of Palin's daughter), or his expose of the eccentric multimillionaire theocrat behind California's Prop 8 anti-gay marriage initaive, Blumenthal has become one of the most important and most constantly cited journalists on how fringe movements are becoming the Republican Party mainstream.

Who's Winning the Twitter Wars?
|
How Democratic and Republican politicians use the popular microblogging service.
"For the foreseeable future, Republicans will continue to broadcast their message widely, while the left-most wing of the Democratic Party mounts a quiet, steady defense. Strategists on both sides agree that Twitter-or at least, the short-form communication that Twitter has pioneered-will be crucial to campaigns for years to come. It turns out that a powerful message can indeed be delivered with only 140 characters."
From Politico
Nearly twice as many Republicans as Democrats have accounts on the social networking platform Twitter (101 compared with 57), and the GOP dominates Twitter usage by an even wider margin, according to a report released this week by the Congressional Research Service that analyzed two weeklong periods in July and August. During those spans, congressional Republicans posted 932 messages - or tweets - compared with 255 for Democrats, CRS analysts found.

Dog Canyon on racism and more
|
I tell them that their exploitation of hatred and racism is a threat to the peace of the community. I urge everyone to speak out. The time has come to put an end to the hatred and racism.
Here is some of what I said:
"It is time you publicly denounced the anger and racism that's being intentionally stoked in hopes of defeating health care reform and building GOP turnout for the 2010 elections. I know from speaking privately with GOP consultants, lobbyists and politicians that many are alarmed and even ashamed about Joe Wilson, about the death threats, about the incendiary, racist tone of the teabaggers, about hate-radio. Do something about it."
"The violent few are a threat to the peace of our communities. There is a great silent majority, as Richard Nixon said, that demands security and peace at home. Today, mainstream Republicans are making a public alliance with their own Weather Underground.
It must stop."

The right's middle-finger spirit of contrarianism
|
By Garrison Keillor
The president has declined to talk about racism in connection with the carpet-chewers of the right who are suffering road rage over his existence, and he's wise to turn that one down. The country doesn't need
a sermon on race or civility right now. What it needs is to believe that our leaders are trying to do the right thing, no matter how inconvenient, and if they forge ahead and fix health insurance, then the
ragemeisters of the right will find other hobbies.

THE most intriguing, and possibly most fateful, news of last week could not be found in the health care horse-trading in Congress, or in the international zoo at the United Nations, or in the Iran slapdown in Pittsburgh. It was an item tucked into a blog at ABCNews.com. George Stephanopoulos reported that the new "must-read book" for President Obama's war team is "Lessons in Disaster" by Gordon M. Goldstein, a foreign-policy scholar who had collaborated with McGeorge Bundy, the Kennedy-Johnson national security adviser, on writing a Robert McNamara-style mea culpa about his role as an architect of the Vietnam War.

Bill White for Texas
|
A couple years ago Senator Ted Kennedy asked me, "Why doesn't Texas elect Senators like Lyndon Johnson and Lloyd Bentsen, who both represented Texas values and helped move our country forward?"
Soon Texans will have an opportunity to answer that question with, "We do," by electing a Senator who will do what is right for Texas, not just one wing of one party.
If you join our team, already thousands strong, by contributing between now and September 30, I will match your donation.

ACLU of Texas 13th annual report on banned and challenged books, Free People Read Freely
|
Last year it was football.
This year, it's penguins
The ACLU of Texas is today releasing its 13th annual report on banned and challenged books, Free People Read Freely, in advance of Banned Books Week, Sept. 26 - Oct. 3.
This year we see once again how school districts across the state engaged in censorship by banning or restricting a variety of books.
Last year's ironic ban was H.G. Bissinger's Friday Night Lights, a book about high school football. This is Texas, right?
This year it was And Tango Makes Three, a book about penguins that was banned by San Antonio's Northside Independent School District, a district located on the doorstep of Sea World.
Several ACLU of Texas chapters have planned banned books events and readings. Please make plans to join your chapter at one of these events. If you're unable to make it, do your part for freedom by downloading our report, pick a banned book from the list and read
http://aclutx.org/projects/bannedbooks.php
Go to our podcast site and listen to H.G. Bissinger talk about last year's Beaumont Independent School District ban of his book, Friday Night Lights.
