What Media Miss In Coverage Of Texas' Restrictive Anti-Abortion Legislation |
Media coverage of Texas' restrictive anti-abortion legislation often presents a false equivalence between arguments from proponents of the legislation and women's health advocates, despite medical experts agreement that such measures are dangerous to women. The Supreme Court temporarily blocked implementation of two provisions of Texas' extreme efforts to restrict abortion through a targeted regulation of abortion providers (TRAP) law. The provisions in question required all clinics providing abortions "in the state to meet the standards for 'ambulatory surgical centers,' including regulations concerning buildings, equipment and staffing," The New York Times explained, and required doctors who performed the procedure "to have admitting privileges at nearby hospital[s]." http://is.gd/TxWdPx |

| Tattoos, Incompetence, and the Heritage Foundation by Paul Krugman NYTimes | Tattoos, Incompetence, and the Heritage Foundation Henry Farrell - who recently said some very interesting things about Very Serious People - writes me about my musings on hipster style, and refers me to a review of a book on codes of the underworld. The book notes that tattoos and such play a role as signals of criminal identity, which work precisely because they make it hard to participate in non-criminal society. | http://is.gd/Q1T6vS |

Collin County Democrats --Ann Richards Gala on October 3, 2015 | Joaquin Castro, US Congressman for the 20th District of Texas and Chief Deputy Whip for the House Democratic Leadership, will deliver the keynote speech at the Ann Richards Gala on October 3, 2015. Castro, who successfully captured his seat in Congress in 2013, is a rapidly rising star in the Democratic Party. He is a second generation Mexican-American from San Antonio. He serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He was the 2013 co-President for the House freshman Democrats. Congressman Castro was invited to speak at the event honoring Governor Ann Richards because he exemplifies the vision Richards held for Texas: "Now we Democrats believe that America is still the country of fair play, that we can come out of a small town or a poor neighborhood and have the same chance as anyone else, and it doesn't matter whether we are black or Hispanic, or disabled or women." Castro will be joined on the podium by Mike Collier, Finance Co-Chair for the Texas Democratic Party. Collier is respected for his ethics and integrity. His mission is to keep politicians accountable to the people they serve. The Ann Richards Gala has been held since 2007. Governor Richards, who served from 1991 - 1995, was a staunch champion of government by the people. The event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Allen. Tickets are for sale at http://is.gd/ZtOL5b . All proceeds go to support the Democratic Party of Collin County
