McKinney cop suspended after video surfaces showing him wrestling black teen girl at pool party

A police officer in the Dallas-Fort Worth area was suspended after a video surfaced that shows him cursing at and shoving teenagers at a pool party Friday. McKinney (Texas) Police Department officers reportedly broke up the party that evening, following a fight near the Craig Ranch North Community Pool, according the person who shot the video.

That person told a KDFW-TV reporter police arrived on the scene and handcuffed several party attendees, including some who were not participants in the fight. A police official said multiple people in the vicinity of the pool did not have permission to be there and refused to leave or obey police commands. http://bit.ly/1MBKt0v

General Meeting Program - June 9, 7:00 pm - Refreshments at 6:30

Texas Nature and Environmental Centers

Dan Moulton will highlight the distribution of Texas Environmental Centers, the types of programs that are offered, and descriptions of some of the more unusual Centers. He will talk about outdoor programs for people of all ages -- guided hikes and activities, summer camps, handicapped-accessible trails, outreach programs, family programs, and many more. Dan's presentation will be based on his Texas Nature and Environmental Centers Guide, which is an excellent resource for fighting "nature-deficit disorder" by facilitating visits to nature and environmental centers throughout Texas.

Jarratt Willis of Texas Conservation Alliance will tell us about municipal water recycling and its benefits. You may be surprised to learn where your drinking water comes from.

Everyone is welcome. You don't have to be a Sierra Club member. Just show up. We'd love to meet you.

Our General Meeting starts at 7:00 pm but come at 6:30 for snacks, information and fellowship. Our meeting takes place at Brookhaven College, Building H, 3939 Valley View Ln in Farmers Branch. Click over to our General Meeting page  page of our website for more information and a map.

WOW Dems General Meeting: Mothers Against Police Brutality

Thursday June 11, 2015

Come hear John Fullinwider from the Dallas chapter of Mothers Against Police Brutality (MAPB) speak about the problem of police brutality in our society today.   Mothers Against Police Brutality is an emerging, Dallas based multi-racial multi ethnic coalition uniting people nationally from all walks of life to hold law enforcement agencies more accountable. Collette Flanagan founded MAPB in 2013 after her son, Clinton Allen, an unarmed young man in custody, was shot to death by a Dallas police officer. MAPB is leading the way to change deadly force policy throughout the US and to help restore trust between the police and the communities they are sworn to serve and protect.

Texas: State of Disaster by Robert Reich

As extreme weather marked by tornadoes and flooding continues to sweep across Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott has requested - and President Obama has granted - federal help.I don't begrudge Texas billions of dollars in disaster relief. After all, we're all part of America. When some of us are in need, we all have a duty to respond.

But the flow of federal money poses a bit of awkwardness for the Lone Star State.

Why 2016 Is So Very Important

A new model concludes that, with a good result next year-including a takeover of the White House-the Republican Party could virtually sweep the board.

Like my colleague George Packer and many others, I feel some trepidation about the upcoming 2016 Presidential election. What with the sheer length of the process, the obscene amounts of money involved, and the prospect of another Bush vs. Clinton contest following the primaries, it's not surprising that a lot of Americans, and particularly progressives, aren't exactly enthused.

Lone Star Stumble

Paul Krugman

Remember the Texas economic miracle? In 2012, it was one of the three main arguments from then-Gov. Rick Perry about why he should be president, along with his strong support from the religious right and something else I can't remember (sorry, couldn't help myself). More broadly, conservatives have long held Texas up as a supposed demonstration that low taxes on the rich and harsh treatment of the poor are the keys to prosperity.

Exhausting Legal Options, Residents of Texas Town Take Direct Action to Enforce Fracking Ban

For years, environmental philosophy professor Adam Briggle has opened his ethics classes at the University of North Texas in Denton with writings on nonviolent civil disobedience, usually Henry David Thoreau's classic essay "Resistance to Civil Government." But Briggle has never before engaged in such an action himself - until now.

On June 1, Briggle, who is president of the Denton Drilling Awareness Group (DAG), one of the driving forces behind a citizen-led initiative that banned hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in Denton city limits in 2014, delayed scheduled fracking operations at a Vantage Energy gas well site on the edge of the city's west side by blocking the entrance to the site Monday morning for about an hour.

The link between the Texas floods and climate change, explained

Texas has suffered damaging floods and record rainfall in May after years of punishing drought. We asked John Nielsen-Gammon, professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University and Texas state climatologist, to discuss how climate scientists - and the general public - can sort out when extreme weather events can and can't be connected to the effects of climate change.
