Dear nancy, Good Afternoon! (Morning!)
Happy MLK Day .. I'm trying to get the newsletter out a little early. I posted the only MLK event I saw that was happening later in the week, but there may be others. There are quite a few other interesting meetings and events this week, please check the calendar.
Of note is the DFW NORML meeting next Saturday in Ft Worth with rapidly changing marijuana laws in other states it will be interesting to watch Texas.
Thanks, Nancy Cunningham

Taxpayer-funded Texas schools blame world wars on evolution and lack of religion |
Texas students in publicly funded charter schools run by Responsive Education Solutions are learning that, "in the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth," as well as that feminism is responsible for single women turning to the federal government as "surrogate husband[s]." According to Zack Kopplin at Slate, Responsive Education Solutions has been "infiltrating and subverting" the charter school movement in order to push an explicitly Christian, conservative agenda. Responsive Education Solutions has 17,000 students, more than 65 schools, and receives $82 million in public funding annually. | Objectively Pro-Unemployment by Paul Krugman NY Times | Jonathan Chait makes a good point about the deficit scolds: whatever they may say, they have in practice played a key role in promoting short-run fiscal austerity and therefore in keeping unemployment high. That's not what they say, of course. Talk to almost any tentacle of the Peterson octopus, and he or she will say "Of course I'm against spending cuts in a depressed economy - in fact, I'm for more stimulus." But this will be followed by a declaration that such stimulus must be accompanied by an agreement on long-term deficit reduction. Confidence, don't you know. See, for example, Robert Rubin's latest. read on | |
Tests show Texas well water polluted by fracking, despite EPA assurances | Environmentalists and residents of Parker County, Texas, were dismayed last year when the EPA dropped an investigation into complaints that fracking by Range Resources was contaminating local water supplies with methane. As part of a legal settlement that got the EPA off its back, the company agreed to test well water in the city of Weatherford, where the complaints were centered. Sure enough, Range's test results found minimal levels of methane in the water. read on
