How Conservatives Dominate TV/Radio Talk Game |
The end of progressive talk in Los Angeles underscores the advantage conservatives hold In the 2012 presidential election, Barack Obama garnered almost 69% of the vote in Los Angeles County, vs. 29% for Mitt Romney. Yet beginning Jan. 1, the U.S.' second-largest media market lacks a dedicated progressive talkradio station, as KTLK-AM became the Patriot, espousing "True American values," anchored by Rush Limbaugh. KTLK's format change, along with Limbaugh's demotion from KFI-AM to its weaker-signaled sister station, raises an interesting question: Why can't liberals talk - or more accurately, why can't they get more people to watch and listen? read on Variety What killed the liberal radio star? The end of an era at WWRL Next week, when WWRL 1600 AM flips its format from progressive talk to Spanish-language music and talk, New York will have no left-leaning commercial talk station for the first time in decades - an ironic development just as an unabashedly liberal mayor and City Council are set to take office. It's not as if liberal voices will vanish - noncommercial stations like WBAI and WNYC are still alive and kicking - but they can't replace the local flavor and crackling energy of commercial radio, where shows move more quickly to accommodate the ads. | Global bankers holding a pity party for themselves by Jim Hightower | Here's an odd headline: "It's Hard to Summon Sympathy for Big Banks." Well, yeah... and why would you try? This piece began with another odd sentence: "It's no fun to be a banker these days." Really? I'd think that counting those multimillion-dollar annual paychecks would be jolly fun. But money doesn't buy love, and it seems that the global princes of high finance are glum because they're not even respected, much less loved. Well, of course not - they've been pigs! | |
