Enrollment is now open in the health care marketplace and we are celebrating! We will be at the Stoneleigh P, 2926 Maple Avenue, Dallas 75201 (in Oak Lawn). Join us for our free We Love Obamacare Party, Monday, October 7, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., and bring a friend! The official health care marketplace website is www.healthcare.gov . Know Someone Who Needs A Voter ID?Dallas County Is Trying To Help |
FREE Election IDs Here Through Next Friday The new Texas law requiring some form of photo ID for voters here may deny many thousands of people the right to vote, if they don't have a driver's license or some of the other possible IDs. The County of Dallas has joined in a lawsuit challenging this law as un-Constitutional, but that suit will take months. Right now, the County is trying to help people who need a photo ID by opening several locations, through Friday, October 11, for people to get the Election Identification Certificates that will let them vote. One problem people have faced getting these is the need to prove citizenship, such as by a birth certificate. These usually cost some $20 or so, making the claim that the voter IDs are free a lie. The Dallas County Clerk's office will help through next Friday by providing a limited certification of birth just for getting this EID, at no charge. (It won't be good for anything else.) This is a great opportunity for those who do need the EID. Please spread the word and ask others to do so. There is a flyer announcing this County program, with a list of the locations to go and more information (in English and Spanish) at this page. For more info on the new requirements, see this page from Dallas County or this page from the Secretary of State. **Here is flyer with more locations - print some out and pass them around and maybe get a carpool going. |

The Texas Tribune Wants You to Help Fund Its Livestreaming Efforts |
But on the night of June 25, 2013, they learned. And nonprofit news organization, The Texas Tribune, which covers politics and policy across the state, is a big reason why Wendy Davis' filibuster speech was broadcast worldwide via livestream. So, the Tribune wants to take its real-time video coverage efforts a step further and has launched an ambitious Kickstarter campaign to purchase the technology to livestream the 2014 Texas governor's election (Davis is reportedly running for Gov. Rick Perry's post). more info here

Dallas Sierra Club Meeting October 8th | Geeral Meeting Program - October 8, 7:00 pm - Refreshments at 6:30 At our October General Meeting, learn about coping with climate change and a proposed free trade agreement. Urban Resilience and Climate Change Ann Drumm will talk about urban resilience in the context of climate change. She will discuss the draft National Climate Assessment and other reports as they pertain to anticipated climate impacts in North Texas, give some highlights of a recent urban resilience conference sponsored by the Dallas Institute, and talk about the prospects for regional multi-stakeholder climate resilience planning in North Texas.Ann Drumm was Chair of the Dallas Sierra Club from 2003 to 2007. Trans-Pacific Partnership Learn about the potential impact of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a controversial proposed free trade agreement to integrate Asia-Pacific markets. We'd love to meet you. Our General Meeting starts at 7:00 pm but come at 6:30 for snacks, information and fellowship. Our meeting takes place at REI, 4515 Lyndon B Johnson Freeway, Dallas, TX 75244. | The Boehner Bunglers By PAUL KRUGMAN |
The federal government is shut down, we're about to hit the debt ceiling (with disastrous economic consequences), and no resolution is in sight. How did this happen? The main answer, which only the most pathologically "balanced" reporting can deny, is the radicalization of the Republican Party. As Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein put it last year in their book, "It's Even Worse Than It Looks," the G.O.P. has become "an insurgent outlier - ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition." read on
