Democracy Now |
In his most extended interview in months, Julian Assange speaks to Democracy Now! from inside the Ecuadorean embassy in London, where he has been holed up for nearly six months. Assange vowed WikiLeaks would persevere despite attacks against it. On Tuesday, the European Commission announced that the credit card company Visa did not break the European Union's antitrust rules by blocking donations to WikiLeaks. Assange also speaks about his new book, Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet, and discusses the United States' targeting of WikiLeaks. Watch/Listen/Read We're joined by someone who has fought tirelessly for women's rights here in the United States and around the world: Eve Ensler. Her new play is called "Emotional Creature" and is now playing in New York City. Ensler is the award-winning playwright and creator of "The Vagina Monologues" and V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. Her new campaign is called One Billion Rising. Ensler will be speaking tonight on "The State of Female America," moderated by Laura Flanders, in New York City. "One of the things we are trying to deal with and make happen with One Billion Rising is to look at the intersection between the violence that happens to women in the homes, in the streets, and at their jobs," Ensler says. Progressive talk radio also losing ground? |
Meanwhile, the drumbeat continues on progressive talk stations being dropped since the election. Clear Channel is removing progressive radio from KPOJ in Portland. Mid-West Family Broadcasting has laid off Madison's John "Sly" Sylvester of radio station WTDY, who resisted political labels but stood with workers when they were under the gun from Wisconsin's Governor Scott Walker. Sly had been on the air in Madison for more than 25 years. Seattle's KPTK is expected to switch from progressive talk to sports read on |
Help make Texas a "blessed" state. Sign on to tell Gov. Perry to opt-in to Medicaid. |
Texas has the highest rate of uninsured (24%) of any state in the country, and Dallas has the second highest number of uninsured of any city in the nation. Expanding Medicaid would ensure 1.5 million more Texans get the medical care they need, including preventive care that will save money and lives. - 100% of the expansion will come from federal dollars for three years, phasing down to 90% thereafter
- Estimates show just $3.1 billion in state investment will bring $28.6 billion in federal revenue to Texas from 2014-2017.
- Expanding Medicaid would be an economic windfall for our state, generating additional state revenues and creating tens of thousands of medical care jobs.
- Texas hospitals, both public and private, provide over $5 billion a year in uncompensated care, and local county taxes help pay for much of this care. Insuring more Texans through Medicaid will lower county costs for this care.
As concerned Texas citizens, we call on our state leaders to opt Texas IN to the Medicaid Expansion Provisions of the Affordable Care Act. Sign Dallas Area Interfaith's petition, and spread the word www.DallasChristians.org |
