Texas Alliance for Retired Americans event |
Next Saturday, December 1 from 1:30-4 pm, Texas Alliance for Retired Americans will join with a number of other groups for the Move-On sponsored rally, "We The People Have Spoken". We feel that the election was a referendum on a number of issues facing decisions in the Lame Duck Congress and we must make our views clear to our representatives. Seniors could be severely impacted by these votes. Cong. Pete Sessions has been named Chair of the powerful House Rules Committee and we are set to rally at his office to make our voices heard! Please join us! Meet at the old Dart Parking Lot at Coit Road and Churchill Way to march to Sessions' office at 12750 Merit Way. Hobie Hukill will speak on "The Fiscal Cliff" and our President Gene Lantz will speak on "Hands off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid!" Please mark your calendars for Monday, December 10 from 4-6 pm when we will rally in front of Sen. John Cornyn's office on Spring Valley. An email with complete details and a map will be sent out next week. |
Democracy Now |
Commemorations are being held across the country this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the country's greatest songwriters, Woody Guthrie. Born on July 14, 1912, in Okemah, Oklahoma, Guthrie wrote hundreds of folk songs, including, "This Land Is Your Land," "Pastures of Plenty," "Pretty Boy Floyd," "Do Re Mi" and "The Ranger's Command." While Guthrie is best remembered as a musician, he also had a deeply political side. At the height of McCarthyism, Guthrie spoke out for labor and civil rights and against fascism. In this one-hour special, you will hear interviews and music from folk singer Pete Seeger, the British musician Billy Bragg, and the historian Will Kaufman, author of the new book, Woody Guthrie, American Radical. | Texas Student's ID Protest Goes to Court |
Andrea Hernandez probably didn't think her Christian beliefs would cause a problem at her San Antonio, Texas, high school. But when she refused to wear a school ID badge implanted with an RFID tracking chip on grounds that it signified the Mark of the Beast (from the biblical Book of Revelation), she sparked a court battle and prompted discussions about how far schools should go in keeping track of their students. Hernandez, who was initially told she would be expelled from her magnet school on Monday if she continued her refusal, was granted a temporary restraining order allowing her to attend classes pending further hearings next week. Benifits of fracking touted at new Perot Museum |
Fracking at front and center in Perot Museum's energy hall A giant drill bit is on display in the Tom Hunt Energy Hall at The Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Visitors to Dallas' new Perot Museum of Nature and Science can study a video display about geological history before they enter the Tom Hunt Energy Hall. That's appropriate. Once they enter the hall, they'll be dunked, figuratively, in the products of that geology, oil and gas - especially the natural. read on DMN here Sierra Club readies for public comments Live near by fracking/gas/well operations? Having issues? Report them to Sierra Club The Sierra Club and others are working with national organizations who are preparing to give comments and info to EPA regarding those who are affected/or live near by fracking/gas/well operations. For those who live near these operations, we need your input. In your comments to John, I think it would be important to mention where you live in proximity to a well (or several), if you know who the operator is, approximately when these operations started, and what your experience/or possible health affects and quality of life have been. Describe where the well/or wells are in relation to your house. He would also need your contact info. John Rath of the Sierra Club has agreed to be the point person on this project. Contact John jrfree49@yahoo.com as soon as you can for details as he needs to collect this info within the week or no later than Sunday. http://www.nctca.net/home.html |

| Fighting Fiscal Phantoms By PAUL KRUGMAN NYTimes | see image large here These are difficult times for the deficit scolds who have dominated policy discussion for almost three years. One could almost feel sorry for them, if it weren't for their role in diverting attention from the ongoing problem of inadequate recovery, and thereby helping to perpetuate catastrophically high unemployment. What has changed? For one thing, the crisis they predicted keeps not happening. Far from fleeing U.S. debt, investors have continued to pile in, driving interest rates to historical lows. Beyond that, suddenly the clear and present danger to the American economy isn't that we'll fail to reduce the deficit enough; it is, instead, that we'll reduce the deficit too much. For that's what the "fiscal cliff" - better described as the austerity bomb - is all about: the tax hikes and spending cuts scheduled to kick in at the end of this year are precisely not what we want to see happen in a still-depressed economy. read on | |
