Ann Richard's Texas | This is screening at some festivals - I hope it gets a screening in North Texas soon !
In a state known for outsized political personalities, a silver-haired lady from Austin became one of the biggest and boldest by speaking her mind and sticking to her guns. The high-energy ANN RICHARDS' TEXAS celebrates her rise in the Democratic Party, her improbable turn as governor and her legacy as a feisty liberal icon. Bigwigs and big stars alike reflect on her unique appeal among an electorate that later embraced George W. Bush and Rick Perry. Keith Patterson Keithrobertpatterson@gmail.com

Democracy Now |
In a rare interview, former Texas death row prisoner Anthony Graves joins us to recount his experience in solitary confinement and how he was fully exonerated and released from prison in 2010. Graves was convicted in 1994 of assisting Robert Carter, a man he barely knew, in the brutal murders of six people. There was no physical evidence linking Graves to the crime, and his conviction relied primarily on Carter's testimony. Before he was executed, Carter twice admitted he had lied about Graves's involvement in the crime. In 2006, an appeals court overturned Graves's conviction and ordered a new trial, saying prosecutors had elicited false statements and withheld testimony. After 18 years in prison, most of them on death row, Graves was exonerated and reunited with his family after a special prosecutor concluded he was an innocent man. Graves is now an active member of the movement to abolish the death penalty. Watch/Listen/Read Sharif Abdel Kouddous reports from Egypt on the country's growing political crisis. Former President Hosni Mubarak is on life support, both candidates claim to have won last weekend's election, and the ruling military council has seized greater power. Official presidential election results are not expected to be announced until Thursday. Tens of thousands of Egyptians protested Tuesday night in Cairo's Tahrir Square in a rally called by the Muslim Brotherhood, expressing outrage over the army's decree late Sunday that it would seize all legislative powers. Chris Hayes Has Arrived With 'Up'- join #uppers @NTXProgressive |
** I've been part of this group since day one - tweeting and watching Up on Sat and Sun Mornings! Join us ! AROUND 11 p.m. on a Friday this past spring, Ted Leo, a singer and songwriter considered something of a legend in New York punk and indie-rock, opened a raucous late set at the Black Cat club in Washington with a curious greeting to his followers. Chris Hayes in his Rockefeller Center office. He has been successful drawing viewers ages 18 to 34. "I know how hard it is to be here," he joked to a crowd of about 750, a Gibson hollow-body drooping from his shoulder, "because you all have to be up at 8 a.m. tomorrow to watch 'Up With Chris Hayes.' | The Great Abdication NYTimes by Paul Krugman | Among economists who know their history, the mere mention of certain years evokes shivers. For example, three years ago Christina Romer, then the head of President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, warned politicians not to re-enact 1937 - the year F.D.R. shifted, far too soon, from fiscal stimulus to austerity, plunging the recovering economy back into recession. Unfortunately, this advice was ignored. But now I'm hearing more and more about an even more fateful year. Suddenly normally calm economists are talking about 1931, the year everything fell apart. | read on |

Texas congressional race becomes an extreme Obama hate-fest |
Roger Williams has gone extreme, and he had to. After years as a genial local car dealer, he's knee-deep in a Central Texas congressional runoff that amounts to an Obama-hating contest against a Tea Party leader aligned with the John Birch Society and Constitution Party. That's why Williams' newest campaign e-mail Tuesday included a shadowy monochrome photo of President Barack Obama labeled: "SOCIALIST!" The e-mail also complains about the Austin newspaper: "Will you help me fight back against the liberal media?" Newspapers aren't Williams' problem. Wes Riddle is his problem Read more here
