Jim Hightower: If You Put $100 Million Into a Race, Don't You Get Naming Rights for the Candidate? |
The Texas populist talks about our out-of-control plutocracy.
"Populism" can be defined in a number of different ways - conceptually, it's viewed quite differently by scholars, politicians and the media. But progressive champion Jim Hightower, author of The Hightower Lowdown, cuts to the chase in his inimitable Texas style. For him, populism is simply an analysis of how money intersects with, and distorts our politics. Hightower's been keeping the plutocrats' feet to the fire for a long time now, but he doesn't recall a time when our elites were so brazen in their entitlement, so predacious in their quest for ever more power over our economy and society. read here |
Democracy Now |
The Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Care Act, President Obama's signature bill, clearing the way for the largest revamp of America's healthcare system since the 1960s. We get reaction from acclaimed filmmaker Michael Moore, whose 2007 documentary, Sicko, tackled many failures of the U.S. healthcare system. Watch/Listen/Read With extreme weather fueling wildfires in Colorado and record rainfall in Florida, the Obama administration has moved closer to approving construction of the southern section of the Keystone XL pipeline. We're joined by environmentalist, educator and author Bill McKibben, founder of the grassroots climate campaign 350.org. Watch/Listen/Read |

Dallas NAACP wants to shut down Texas lottery The Dallas NAACP chapter wants the Texas lottery to close up shop. Organizer's Guide to Election Administration |
The Organizer's Guide to Election Administration gives you all the info you've been desperately searching for along with rules you didn't even know you needed to know about. Most importantly to us, every piece of information is sourced and dated, so you know exactly how fresh it is and can trace it back to verify its accuracy. Take a look around, and you'll recognize election administration rules that you love to hate (don't worry, Arizona organizers, the proof of citizenship requirement is inside). You also might start to think about new ways in which election administration can affect your work, like voter challenges at the polling place. And hopefully, our information will help you easily reach out to voters with special needs, like military voters, people with felony convictions, or people who need assistance in the voting booth. http://elections.neworganizing.com/guide/ |

| Robert Reich: Mitt Romney and the New Gilded Age | | The election of 2012 raises two perplexing questions. The first is how the GOP could put up someone for president who so brazenly epitomizes the excesses of casino capitalism that have nearly destroyed the economy and overwhelmed our democracy. The second is why the Democrats have failed to point this out. The White House has criticized Mitt Romney for his years at the helm of Bain Capital, pointing to a deal that led to the bankruptcy of GS Technologies, a Bain investment in Kansas City that
