Dear nancy, Good Afternoon !
Lots going on and some great stuff you may have missed this last week! I have changed the calendar a little below to help get all the events organized - hope it helps. I am also trying to add one progressive volunteer opportunity a week, folks maybe can't always volunteer, but I think if readers know about occasional volunteer opportunities that they will help when they can.
You can meet Rev Al and meet Gilberto Hinojosa ( chair of TX Dems) this week ! You can bowl to support Equality and justice, you can work out with Michele Obama ( kind of ;) ) and help harvest vegetables for the hungry in North Texas. All these events need, is you!
Please suggest this newsletter to friends and family - ask your progressive group or club to promote this newsletter and put me on your mailing list! Remember anyone can sponsor the newsletter for $20
Thanks, Nancy Cunningham

Sharpton arrives July 23 to participate and lead in the "Super Monday Meet Me At The Polls Rally" in an attempt to encourage voters to take advantage of the early voting period of July 23-27. Sharpton is scheduled to be at the following sites: - Mattie Nash-Myrtle Davis Recreation Center /3710 N. Hampton Rd. /8:30 a.m.
- Dallas West Library /2332 Singleton Blvd. /10 a.m.
- Oak Cliff Sub-Courthouse /410 S. Beckley Ave. /11 a.m.
According to the National Action Network website, Sharpton is also scheduled to speak at the "Decision: Dallas/Fort Worth Community Leaders Breakfast, at Top of the Cliff, 440 S. Zang Blvd. Sharpton is founder and president of the National Action Network, which fosters voter education as well as garners social resources for the urban community. He hosts his own radio show, "Keepin' It Real," which airs Sunday mornings on KSOUL 94.5 FM in Dallas. He is also the host of "Politics Nation," airing on weekday evenings on the NBCNews cable channel (formerly MSNBC). One of the current campaigns Sharpton is addressing is against alleged voter suppression, in light of controversial Voter ID laws passed in over 30 states. While preparing for a march in Selma, Alabama in January, he stated: "It is important that we not just remember what Dr. King and others did in 1965 with the Voting Rights Act that came as a result of the Selma to Montgomery march. We must preserve it against Voter ID Laws and the early voting and voter suppression attempts that are taking place today. To celebrate Dr. King and allow them to undermine him is hypocritical." more here |
Democracy Now |
Amidst a series of recent scandals that have rocked the global banking system, journalist Chris Hayes joins us to discuss his new book, Twilight of the Elites: America After Meritocracy. The book examines how Wall Street and other major institutions, from Congress to the Catholic Church to Major League Baseball, have been crippled by corruption and incompetence. Hayes is host of the MSNBC weekend show, Up with Chris Hayes, and is editor-at-large of The Nation magazine. Watch/Listen/Read Rolling Stone's Matt Taibbi joins us to discuss the pattern of systemic corruption by 16 banks accused of rigging a key global interest rate used in contracts worth trillions of dollars. The London Interbank Offered Rate, known as Libor, is the average interest rate at which banks can borrow from each other. Some analysts say it defines the cost of money. Barclays was recently fined $453 million for rigging Libor, and a number of other banks are under investigation. Taibbi is author of the book Griftopia: A Story of Bankers, Politicians, and the Most Audacious Power Grab in American History. Watch/Listen/Read |
YFT Collin County raising money to help catch lesbian couple's shooter |
Youth First Texas Collin County is raising money for Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest in the shooting of teen lesbian couple Mollie Olgin and Kristene Chapa in Portland, Texas, last month. The group hopes to raise at least $1,000 for the reward. Lisa Mashigian, a YFT Collin County volunteer, called the event "the brain child of one of our youth." Dallas activist CD Kirven, who originated the idea of collecting reward money to help capture the couple's shooter, said YFT member Kris Wong, 17, is coordinating the event. Kirven said the group remains interested in the shooting because of the age of the victims. "If we as a community tell kids, 'It gets better,' then we need to make it better," Kirven said. The fundraiser will be at 8 p.m. July 28 at Plano Superbowl, 2521 K Ave. in Plano. The cost is $25. Ten lanes are reserved with room for 60 people to participate. There's a game room, food and a full-service bar, and there will be a raffle. Chapa, 19, was recently released from the hospital and, with both sets of parents present, was told that Olgin, 18, died in the shooting. 10 Fascinating Documentaries About the One Percent |
Timeshare mogul David Siegel and his wife Jackie have rich people problems. The couple set out to construct a mansion inspired by the royal palace of Versailles - complete with two tennis courts and a baseball field, three pools, two movie theaters, a bowling alley, a ballroom, and other mind boggling amenities. Everything came to a screeching halt, though, when the financial crisis and real estate bubble squashed their self-indulgent endeavor. (Recent reports indicate the Siegels refinanced and construction is starting again.) Lauren Greenfield's movie The Queen of Versailles - which won the 2012 Directing Award at Sundance - opens in theaters this Friday. See what other documentaries about the One Percent are worth your time after the jump. Leave us your recommendations below. Read on |

KKDA in Dallas, which has served black listeners in North Texas for decades, gets gutted : Radio Station was a Forum for Black Voices |
Texas is no different from any place in America. It has always had communities that are underserved or ignored by larger local and regional media. And it has always had news outlets attempting to fill the gap-from The Texas Observer to the defunct Dallas Express, from The Forward Times in Houston to alternative weeklies across the state. One of the mainstays of this gap-filling mission has been KKDA-AM in Dallas, which has served black listeners a combination of news, views and cultural touchstones hard to find anywhere else in North Texas. For decades, the station has been a listening post, sounding board and rallying force for black Dallas. It has given a voice to political figures, activists and artists marginalized or stereotyped by the mainstream media. Fans try to figure out how to pull down the signal in Waco, Tyler and other towns. read on |

A Guide To Consumer Brands Helping Bankroll Right-Wing Attack Ads | Have you eaten at White Castle recently? Or caught a movie at Regal Cinemas? If so, you may be unwittingly helping finance right-wing attack ads. That's because many of the country's most common brands are run by rich conservatives who are using their personal wealth to bankroll outside spending groups that are running attack ads smearing progressives. From Marriott Hotels to Brawny paper towels, and from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Coachella music festival, corporate executives at these organizations have given millions of dollars to groups like Mitt Romney's Super PAC Restore Our Future. Some corporations, like Waffle House, give direct donations to conservative attack ad groups like Karl Rove's American Crossroads. The following list of consumer brands either have leaders who wrote checks to outside right-wing attack ad groups or gave money directly from the corporation. Only entities that gave $25,000 or more were included in this guide. read on and print out also: 5 Food Companies Run by Radical Right-Wingers here

| Loading the Climate Dice By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times | A couple of weeks ago the Northeast was in the grip of a severe heat wave. As I write this, however, it's a fairly cool day in New Jersey, considering that it's late July. Weather is like that; it fluctuates. And this banal observation may be what dooms us to climate catastrophe, in two ways. On one side, the variability of temperatures from day to day and year to year makes it easy to miss, ignore or obscure the longer-term upward trend. On the other, even a fairly modest rise in average temperatures translates into a much higher frequency of extreme events - like the devastating drought now gripping America's heartland - that do vast damage. Al Franken keeps comedy in check -- most of the time | When Rand Paul needed a zinger, Al Franken gave him a suggestion: a self-deprecating joke about suffering through childhood with a libertarian father who wouldn't let up on the gold standard. "It wouldn't have been so bad if my dad wasn't so damn cheap," Franken privately told Paul to use as a laugh line. "Just 50 cents in gold coins." Since he arrived in the Senate three years ago, the former "Saturday Night Live" star has tried to project an ultra-serious public image of a studious and hard-working senator who shuns the media spotlight and whose past career as a comedian and satirist is just that -- a thing of the past. read on
