Help Stop Corporate America!s Latest Power Grab Rally for Good Jobs, Affordable Medicine & a Healthy Environment Solidarity Rally & March | Saturday, May 12 * 1:00 PM Addison Circle Park 15650 Addison Rd * Addison, TX The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a massive new free trade agreement being negotiated behind-closed-doors in the Dallas metro area from May 8 - 18. Transnational corporations want to use the TPP to: wwOffshore good-paying jobs to low-wage nations and undercut working conditions globally *Create new tools for attacking environmental and consumer safety policies *Further deregulate Wall Street banks, hedge funds and insurance companies *Lengthen patents thereby blocking access to affordable, generic medications Our best chance of preventing a "NAFTA of the Pacific" is to come together now and drag the TPP out of the shadows. Approximately 600 corporate lobbyists have been given "cleared advisor" status in the TPP negotiations, but the general public has been barred from even reviewing what U.S. negotiators are proposing in our names. To learn about buses, carpooling and upcoming educational events, visit: WWW.TPPDALLAS.ORG (pdf flyers you can print them out ) Activities planned around the TPP negotiating summit in Addison include: * Press Conference: No Back Room Deals for the 1%. The Dallas Peace Center and others are sponsoring a public teach-in about the TPP at the Community Center for Cooperation (2900 Live Oak St, Dallas) 6:00pm on Thursday, May 10 Reception to begin at 6:30 followed by speakers including Celeste Drake (AFL-CIO), Ilana Solomon (Sierra Club), Lori Wallach (Global Trade Watch) and Sanya Reid Smith (Third World Network). * Rally and March: TPP, Out of the Shadows! Democracy Now |
Robert McChesney, co-founder of Free Press, calls the British report that slams News Corp. over the phone-hacking scandal a "moment of truth" for American media. News Corp. owns 27 broadcast licenses in the United States. Watch/Listen/Read Today marks what activists are calling 1T Day, the day U.S. student debt reaches $1 trillion. A coalition of groups from Occupy Wall Street plan to gather on college campuses and communities around the country to protest record-high college costs and call for an extension of low-interest rates on federally subsidized Stafford loans. We speak with Pamela Brown, a Ph.D. student who helped launch the Occupy Student Debt Campaign "Pledge of Refusal," and David Harvey, a professor and author whose most recent book is Rebel Cities: From the Right to the City to the Urban Revolution." In Texas politics, yard signs still popular .html#storylink=cpy | Maybe it's a sign of the times. In today's obsessively high-tech society, in which Facebook and Twitter dominate and there's an app for almost anything, many politicians are focusing on some decidedly low-tech basics to get their campaign messages across: distributing door hangers, campaign mailers and yard signs, buying billboards and going door-to-door in key neighborhoods. Some say these traditional campaign tools will be more apparent than ever because two big election dates fall within weeks of each other -- the May 12 city and school elections and the May 29 statewide primaries. Texas Attorney General Compares Planned Parenthood To Terrorist Organization | Just two hours after a U.S. district judge stopped a Texas law that would have eliminated Planned Parenthood's participation in the state's Women's Health Program, Federal Appeals Judge Jerry E. Smith issued an emergency stay that lifted that order. In the appeal for the emergency stay, a team of attorneys led by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott compared Planned Parenthood to a terrorist organization. read on |
Stephen King: Tax Me, for F@%&'s Sake! | The iconic writer scolds the superrich (including himself-and Mitt Romney) for not giving back, and warns of a Kingsian apocalyptic scenario if inequality is not addressed in America. Chris Christie may be fat, but he ain't Santa Claus. In fact, he seems unable to decide if he is New Jersey's governor or its caporegime, and it may be a comment on the coarsening of American discourse that his brash rudeness is often taken for charm. In February, while discussing New Jersey's newly amended income-tax law, which allows the rich to pay less (proportionally) than the middle class, Christie was asked about Warren Buffett's observation that he paid less federal income taxes than his personal secretary, and that wasn't fair. read on |
North Texas Progressive Book Suggestion | Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News By Dan Rather List Price: $27.99 Price: $18.47 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. Buy HERE
This memoir by Dan Rather -- one of the most pre-eminent journalists of our time -- is told in a straightforward and conversational manner so that you hear his distinctive voice on every page. Rather, -- who has won every prestigious journalism award in his distinguished career -- discusses all the big stories from his decades of reporting. This very personal accounting includes (but is certainly not limited to) his dismissal from CBS, the Abu Ghraib story, the George W. Bush Air National Guard controversy, his coverage of the JFK assassination, the origin of "Hurricane Dan" as well as inside stories about all the top personalities Dan has either interviewed or worked with over his remarkable career. Dan Rather: Mark Cuban Has The Guts My CBS Bosses Lacked Don't make the mistake of thinking that Dan Rather's angry. Sure, almost eight years after the events that led to his forced departure from CBS News, and three years after his defeat in a $70 million lawsuit stemming from those events, he still has plenty to say about his former bosses, George Bush's National Guard service and the refusal of the former to back his controversial reporting about the latter. He offers arguments old and new in a memoir, "Rather Outspoken," published this week by Grand Central.read on Forbes Magazine

| The War On Women Rally in Austin April 28uth photos and video | Saturday, the fight against the "War on Women" was taken to the Texas State Capitol. Democrats say republicans are attacking women's rights after recent legislation was passed, including the defending of Planned Parenthood in Texas. "The legislature, in a very shortsighted way decided to cut funding for women's healthcare that impacts preventative screens for breast and cervical cancer, access to family planning contraceptives, all in the name of trying to prevent abortion," said Rep. Donna Howard, (D). read on and watch video More great photos of event here http://wowtex.org/ MSNBC interview with Shelia Jackson Lee on Texas War on women here |

| Those Revolting Europeans By PAUL KRUGMAN | The French are revolting. The Greeks, too. And it's about time. Both countries held elections Sunday that were in effect referendums on the current European economic strategy, and in both countries voters turned two thumbs down. It's far from clear how soon the votes will lead to changes in actual policy, but time is clearly running out for the strategy of recovery through austerity - and that's a good thing. Needless to say, that's not what you heard from the usual suspects in the run-up to the elections. It was actually kind of funny to see the apostles of orthodoxy trying to portray the cautious, mild-mannered François Hollande as a figure of menace. He is "rather dangerous," declared The Economist, which observed that he "genuinely believes in the need to create a fairer society." Quelle horreur! read on
