In part two of our interview with Tavis Smiley and Prof. Cornel West, they discuss growing up in working-class households. Looking at current events, Smiley and West cite Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s comment that "war is the enemy of the poor." They compare the amount of money spent on the war in Iraq, and the 2012 presidential campaign, to funding for programs that assist the one in two Americans who are now poor. Watch/Listen/Read The Vatican has reprimanded the largest group of Catholic nuns in the United States, saying they have focused too heavily on issues of social justice, while failing to speak out enough on "issues of crucial importance," such as abortion and same-sex marriage. In a report issued last week, church leaders accused the nuns of promoting "radical feminist" ideas and challenging key teachings on homosexuality and male-only priesthood. We speak with Sister Simone Campbell, head of the Catholic social justice group NETWORK, which was harshly criticized in last week's report. Watch/Listen/Read |

| Wasting our minds Paul Krugman NY Times | In Spain, the unemployment rate among workers under 25 is more than 50 percent. In Ireland almost a third of the young are unemployed. Here in America, youth unemployment is "only" 16.5 percent, which is still terrible - but things could be worse. And sure enough, many politicians are doing all they can to guarantee that things will, in fact, get worse. We've been hearing a lot about the war on women, which is real enough. But there's also a war on the young, which is just as real even if it's better disguised. And it's doing immense harm, not just to the young, but to the nation's future. Read on | |

The Revisionaries documentary about Texas Board of Education and creationism |
Clearly, our campaign against textbook censorship and for strong public schools is reaching a wider audience than ever before. And this comes in a year when all 15 seats on the state board are up for election. So take advantage of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the State Board of Education and get politics out of our public schools: - Sign TFN's pledge to change the SBOE.
- Forward this email to friends and family and ask them to join our campaign.
- Support our work by donating to the Texas Freedom Network today.
And if you need even more reason to take action, look no further than the appearance by Don McLeroy, the arch-creationist and former SBOE chairman also featured in "The Revisionaries," on Comedy Central's Colbert Report last night. Click here to see how host Stephen Colbert sums up efforts by McLeroy and other extremists on the SBOE to politicize public school classrooms: "reality by majority vote."
Help us ensure that public education in Texas is no longer the butt of national jokes and the subject of alarming documentaries.
