Voter Registration Status Update from Collin County Dems but great info for everyone |
Collin county link is in article but here is link to Dallas and TarrantCounty to check your voter registration. Despite some well-intentioned but misinformed emails circulating that Collin County citizens are not registered to vote anymore because the voter registration certificate that voters have in hand right now has an expiration date of 12/31/11, an expired voter registration certificate doesn't mean you are not registered to vote. If you were registered to vote in Collin County on 12/31/11, you should still be registered. You can confirm your current Collin County voter registration status here (click to access). The issuance of new voter registration certificates has been delayed by the redistricting court fights, as political district lines were in dispute and the voter registration certificates could not be issued until the lines were settled. If you are in the Collin County voter registration database accessible through the above link, you do not need to re-register. (However, if you have moved within Collin County since you registered, you are still registered to vote, but you should update your address with the County Elections Department by filling out and submitting an updated registration -- click to access the registration page -- voter registration forms are also available at all U.S. Post Offices, many government offices, and at the DPCC HQ at 2504 K Ave, Ste 200, Plano, 75074 -- DPCC HQ open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.) County Convention Date Set for Saturday, April 21st Our 2012 Collin County Democratic Convention will be held on Saturday, April 21st. All Collin County registered voters* that sign an oath of affiliation with the Democratic Party for the year 2012, and promise not to vote in the Republican Primary or participate in any other political party's convention this year will be able to attend and participate! Our 2012 Collin County Democratic Convention is fast shaping up to be an exciting event! Stay tuned for upcoming announcements. Save the date and join with us! The Democratic Party of Collin County welcomes you! * - Please note: The Texas Democratic Party has specified that convention attendees should have registered to vote in the county by Tuesday, March 20th, which is tomorrow. (Registration form postmark deadline, or in person registration.) If you have any questions or need any assistance, please don't hesitate to call the party headquarters at 972.578.1483. |
Democracy Now |
In a new film, psychologist and filmmaker Jan Haaken embeds with military therapists in Afghanistan and at their training at Joint Base Lewis-McChord - where the alleged U.S. shooter of Afghan civilians is from. Lewis-McChord has a controversial record of addressing mental health problems, including high rates of suicides, domestic violence and homicides by soldiers. It was also home to the notorious "kill team," a group of soldiers who murdered Afghan civilians at random and collected their fingers as trophies. Haaken's forthcoming documentary, Mind Zone: Therapists Behind the Front Lines, shows the ethical dilemmas faced by therapists in Afghanistan who guide soldiers through the trauma of war. Watch/Listen/Read Since last year, 15 states have passed new voting laws that critics say suppress the votes of the poor, students and people of color. This is the topic of a major speech set for today by NAACP head Benjamin Jealous before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. The NAACP wants a U.N. delegation of experts to monitor the impact of voter identification laws, as well new restrictions on same-day registration, early voting, Sunday voting, and making it harder to run a voting registration drive. Watch/Listen/Read We look at rising fuel costs, one of the major issues raised by the Republican contenders in the 2012 presidential campaign. Since the beginning of the year, the average of price of a gallon of regular gasoline has jumped 16 percent to more than $3.80. Our guest, Michael Klare, says oil prices are destined to remain high for a long time to come because most of the remaining oil on the planet is no longer easily accessible. Klare's latest book is The Race for What's Left: The Global Scramble for the World's Last Resources. Watch/Listen/Read |

| "Raid of the Rainbow Lounge" Documentary to Premieres |
It's been two and half years since TABC agents and Fort Worth Police officers busted into Fort Worth gay bar the Rainbow Lounge, and arrested several customers for public intoxication. Filmmaker Robert Camina has been documenting the raid and its aftermath. That documentary is now complete. March 15th is the world premiere of "Raid of the Rainbow Lounge" at a sold-out showing in Fort Worth. It's a story that quickly garnered national attention. Customer Chad Gibson filed a lawsuit for his injuries. He got a $400,000 settlement from the city of Fort Worth in 2011. "The people that I thought were there to protect and to serve me, they're people with 'get away with it' badges," said Gibson, in an interview with CW33, shortly after the arrests. read on To get more info, see photos go here

| Ari Berman: "GOP War on Voting" Targets Swing States With New Voter ID and Registration Laws |
This morning, Ari Berman joined Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! to discuss the Justice Department's decision to block Texas from enforcing a new voter identification law. "What the Justice Department found," said Berman, was that "600 to 800 thousand registered voters didn't have the required ID, and those were disproportionately Hispanic." |

| Hooray for health reform | It's said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies. If the same principle applies to legislation, the Affordable Care Act - which was signed into law two years ago, but for the most part has yet to take effect - sits in a place of high honor. Now, the act - known to its foes as Obamacare, and to the cognoscenti as ObamaRomneycare - isn't easy to love, since it's very much a compromise, dictated by the perceived political need to change existing coverage and challenge entrenched interests as little as possible. But the perfect is the enemy of the good; for all its imperfections, this reform would do an enormous amount of good. And one indicator of just how good it is comes from the apparent inability of its opponents to make an honest case against it. read on | |

Clean Air Meetup | Next Thurs Mar. 22 evening is the Clean Air Meetup at Picasso at Inwood and Forest at 6:30 pm. Smitty of Public Citizen will be there. Bring your announcements too. Get the updates on the following:
A) Gas Drilling B) TransCanada's Keystone Tar Sands Pipeline (what's new)-- More on the Enbridge Seaway Pipeline coming to Dallas C) Exide battery plant in Frisco D) Coal -- what can we do re: retiring dirty old coal.... E) Upcoming Earth Day and more
HELP ORGANIZE AGAINST DIRTY COAL Luminant (formerly TXU) is heading toward bankruptcy. The Wall Street investors that staked their money on dirty coal plants made a bad investment. The old, dirty coal plants in East Texas simply aren't efficient enough to run all the time anymore. We believe that with some nudging in the right direction, we can succeed in getting the worst pollution sources in East Texas closed. There are clean energy sources that can and should be developed to support the communities in those areas while providing Texas with the power that it needs.
Public Citizen, SEED Coalition, and Sierra Club are hosting a meeting to reach out to concerned citizens and get organized to take action. The meeting will be held in the Lobby Room of the Athens Cain Community Center on Saturday, March 24th at 2:30pm. Please join us and please extend this invitation to others who are interested in clearing the air in East Texas and moving to a clean energy economy
What: Clean up East Texas Air Organizing Meeting When: Saturday, March 24th at 2:30pm Where: Lobby Room of the Athens Cain Community Center (915 South Palestine Street, Athens, TX 75751)
