Breaking ** Texas women's health program losing federal money, clinics | Know this : Texas is among several states where Republican-controlled legislatures have voted to cut off Planned Parenthood's funding. Wisconsin has withheld funding for family planning and breast cancer screenings. Lawmakers in Indiana and Kansas voted to bar Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid or other federal funding, but judges blocked the laws. North Carolina's Legislature voted to withhold state and federal money for non-abortion services, such as contraception and teen pregnancy programs, but a judge blocked that law, too. In Texas, supporters of the law taking effect March 14 argue it will keep taxpayer money out of organizations that support abortion, which they believe should be banned in the state. ** The governor's program serves 130 million state-wide , Planned Parenthood of Texas serves 90 million just in North Texas. FORT WORTH (AP) - Delia Henry was tired but had no idea her blood sugar was high when she went to Planned Parenthood for her annual gynecological exam. The clinic referred her to a doctor, who diagnosed her with diabetes. The 31-year-old nursing student said she would have skipped the exam since she has no insurance, but she had just signed up for Texas' Women's Health Program, which provides cancer screenings, contraceptives and basic health care to about 130,000 low-income women through Medicaid. But under a state law taking effect March 14, Henry and other eligible women won't be able to get care at Planned Parenthood clinics - which treat about 44 percent of the program's patients - or other facilities with ties to abortion providers, meaning those women will have to find new health-care providers. read on

Breaking ** Feds Reject Texas Voter ID Law | The U.S. Department of Justice has rejected Texas' application for preclearance of its voter ID law, saying the state did not prove that the bill would not have a discriminatory effect on minority voters. "The department's letter states that Texas did not meet its burden under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of showing that the law will not have a discriminatory effect on minority voters, and therefore the department objects to the Texas voter identification law," said Xochitl Hinojosa, a Justice Department spokeswoman. "According to the state's own data, a Hispanic registered voter is at least 46.5%, and potentially 120%, more likely than a non-Hispanic registered voter to lack the required identification." read on Texas Tribune |

Self-described book smuggler Tony Diaz, nicknamed "El Libro-Traficante," is set to launch a small caravan to bring carloads of controversial books into Arizona that were recently banned by public school officials in Tucson after the city suspended its acclaimed Mexican American Studies program due to a state ban on the teaching of ethnic studies. Watch/Listen/Read In a newly drawn district in Ohio, outspoken antiwar Rep. Dennis Kucinich suffered a defeat against Rep. Marcy Kaptur. The two were forced to square off in a Democratic primary after Republicans redrew Ohio's congressional map. Kaptur now faces Samuel Wurzelbacher, "Joe the Plumber," winner of the district's Republican primary. Kucinich has said he may establish residency in Washington state, where there is a June filing deadline to run for a new congressional seat in the Seattle area. Watch/Listen/Read Investigative journalists Greg Palast and Antonia Juhasz examine who wins and who loses in BP's settlement. We also speak with Florida State University Oceanography Professor Ian MacDonald about what it means to restore the Gulf of Mexico. Watch/Listen/Read |

Woody Guthrie at 100 by Jim Hightower | Where's Woody when we need him? In these times of tinkle-down economics - with the money powers thinking that they're the top dogs and that the rest of us are just a bunch of fire hydrants - we need for the hard-hitting (yet uplifting) musical stories, social commentaries and inspired lyrical populism of Woody Guthrie.Woody Guthrie (1912 - 1967) This year will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of this legendary grassroots troubadour, who came out of the Oklahoma dust bowl to rally America's "just plain folks" to fight back against the elites who were knocking them down. read on

Doonesbury strip on Texas abortion law dropped by some US newspapers | Several papers decline to use cartoon strip, which depicts state-required sonograms as Republican-approved rape Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau has defended his cartoon strip about abortion, which several US newspapers are refusing to run, saying he felt compelled to respond to the way Republicans across America are undermining women's healthcare rights. The strip, published on Monday and scheduled to run all week, has been rejected by several papers, while others said they were switching it from the comic section to the editorial page. read on Guardian UK ( become many US papers aren't covering / running ) HERE |

| Ignorance Is Strength By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times |
One way in which Americans have always been exceptional has been in our support for education. First we took the lead in universal primary education; then the "high school movement" made us the first nation to embrace widespread secondary education. And after World War II, public support, including the G.I. Bill and a huge expansion of public universities, helped large numbers of Americans to get college degrees. read on | |
