Save Seattle Progressive Talk - sign petition

Randi said on her show that they are paying attention to the number of people signing the petition.

It was just announced that AM 1090 will drop progressive talk and switch to an all sports format after the first of the year.Progressive radio listeners in the greater Seattle area are appalled at the prospect of losing the great progressive radio shows hosted by Ed Shultz, Thom Hartmann, Norman Goldman, Randi Rhodes, Stephanie Miller and others.

Please join us in letting AM 1090's advertisers know that we, their customers, want progressive voices be heard! We need AM 1090 to stay progressive...or for another local station to take its place as Seattle's progressive voice.

"We Are Running Out of Time": Obama Urged to Match Rhetoric to Action on Climate Deal

Most major issues remain unresolved at the U.N. climate summit in Doha as negotiators enter the final stretch of the two-week summit. While the Doha talks involve nations working toward a pact to limit greenhouse gases starting in 2020, many say the world cannot wait that long. The United States has come under intense criticism at the summit from environmentalists and smaller nations who say President Obama has failed to meet his stated commitments to tackle global warming. We're joined by Kumi Naidoo, executive director of Greenpeace International, and Samantha Smith, head of the World Wildlife Fund's Global Climate and Energy Initiative. Watch/Listen/Read

Nuclear reactor waste is now being shipped to the Waste Control Specialists (WCS) radioactive waste dump in Andrews County in West Texas for burial.

Everyone is welcome. You don't have to be a Sierra Club member. Just show up. We'd love to meet you.

Holiday Message from Texas ACLU

There's a nasty rumor going around that the ACLU of Texas is anti-religion or anti-Christian. The truth is actually quite the opposite: The ACLU of Texas loves Christmas. And Hanukkah. And Ashura. And Bodhi Day. And Kwanzaa. Well, you get the idea.

Our work gives us lots of opportunities to support people's freedom to practice their faith, or no faith at all, without government interference. Most recently, we supported students in the Plano school district who wanted to include pencils with religious messages (like 'Jesus is the reason for the season') in holiday gift bags.

Learn about our recent cases that protect the constitutional rights of believers and non-believers alike.

Religious freedom is a fundamental human right that is guaranteed by the First Amendment's Free Exercise and Establishment clauses. We have long defended the rights of individuals, families, and religious communities to practice religion freely and in public, regardless of any particular religious affiliation.

This holiday season we encourage you to find out more about the ACLU of Texas' work on behalf of religious freedom. Watch the video: Find out what we really think of Christmas.

Yours in liberty,

ACLU of Texas www.aclutx.org

The Forgotten Millions

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Let's get one thing straight: America is not facing a fiscal crisis. It is, however, still very much experiencing a job crisis.

It's easy to get confused about the fiscal thing, since everyone's talking about the "fiscal cliff." Indeed, one recent poll suggests that a large plurality of the public believes that the budget deficit will go up if we go off that cliff.

In fact, of course, it's just the opposite: The danger is that the deficit will come down too much, too fast. And the reasons that might happen are purely political; we may be about to slash spending and raise taxes not because markets demand it, but because Republicans have been using blackmail as a bargaining strategy, and the president seems ready to call their bluff.

Rachel Maddow Nominated for Grammy Award

Rachel Maddow Nominated for Grammy Award

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow has been nominated for a Grammy Award. Maddow is a nominee for the audio version of her book Drift in the "Spoken Word Field." She is up against some steep competition, including President Bill Clinton and comedian Ellen DeGeneres.  If she is victorious, Maddow would be the first cable news anchor to win the Grammy. In the past, however, several television personalities have won: Comedy Central's Jon Stewart took home the prize in 2011 and Edward R. Murrow won in 1967.

Democracy Now

EXCLUSIVE: Julian Assange on WikiLeaks, Bradley Manning, Cypherpunks, Surveillance State

In his most extended interview in months, Julian Assange speaks to Democracy Now! from inside the Ecuadorean embassy in London, where he has been holed up for nearly six months. Assange vowed WikiLeaks would persevere despite attacks against it. On Tuesday, the European Commission announced that the credit card company Visa did not break the European Union's antitrust rules by blocking donations to WikiLeaks. Assange also speaks about his new book, Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet, and discusses the United States' targeting of WikiLeaks. Watch/Listen/Read

Eve Ensler on "The State of Female America," Her Play "Emotional Creature" & Women Violence in Congo

We're joined by someone who has fought tirelessly for women's rights here in the United States and around the world: Eve Ensler. Her new play is called "Emotional Creature" and is now playing in New York City. Ensler is the award-winning playwright and creator of "The Vagina Monologues" and V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. Her new campaign is called One Billion Rising. Ensler will be speaking tonight on "The State of Female America," moderated by Laura Flanders, in New York City. "One of the things we are trying to deal with and make happen with One Billion Rising is to look at the intersection between the violence that happens to women in the homes, in the streets, and at their jobs," Ensler says.

Progressive talk radio also losing ground?

Meanwhile, the drumbeat continues on progressive talk stations being dropped since the election. Clear Channel is removing progressive radio from KPOJ in Portland.

Mid-West Family Broadcasting has laid off Madison's John "Sly" Sylvester of radio station WTDY, who resisted political labels but stood with workers when they were under the gun from Wisconsin's Governor Scott Walker. Sly had been on the air in Madison for more than 25 years.

Seattle's KPTK is expected to switch from progressive talk to sports   read on

Help make Texas a "blessed" state. Sign on to tell Gov. Perry to opt-in to Medicaid.

Texas has the highest rate of uninsured (24%) of any state in the country, and Dallas has the second highest number of uninsured of any city in the nation. Expanding Medicaid would ensure 1.5 million more Texans get the medical care they need, including preventive care that will save money and lives.

  • 100% of the expansion will come from federal dollars for three years, phasing down to 90% thereafter
  • Estimates show just $3.1 billion in state investment will bring $28.6 billion in federal revenue to Texas from 2014-2017.
  • Expanding Medicaid would be an economic windfall for our state, generating additional state revenues and creating tens of thousands of medical care jobs.
  • Texas hospitals, both public and private, provide over $5 billion a year in uncompensated care, and local county taxes help pay for much of this care. Insuring more Texans through Medicaid will lower county costs for this care.

As concerned Texas citizens, we call on our state leaders to opt Texas IN to the Medicaid Expansion Provisions of the Affordable Care Act. Sign Dallas Area Interfaith's petition, and spread the word   www.DallasChristians.org

Lines Blur in Texas as Industries Seek Givebacks

Under Gov. Rick Perry, Texas offers more incentives to attract businesses than any other state, around $19 billion a year, an examination by The New York Times has found. Texas justifies its largess by pointing out that it is home to half of all the private sector jobs created over the last decade nationwide.
