Welcome to Texas! Unless you're Al Jazeera |
Ten miles. Sixteen kilometres. That's how deep I got into Texas before being asked to leave. Allow me to explain. I'm in the middle of a two-week drive across the United States. I am stopping along the way in small towns and big cities to talk to people of all walks of life about the wide-ranging impact (or not) of 9/11 on American life. As we're driving though the panhandle of Oklahoma, and as small towns whizz by outside the window, I noticed the local high schools seemed to be preparing for Friday night football. And the only thing better than Friday night high school football in Oklahoma is Friday night high school football in Texas. "Great," I say. "Let's stop at a random high school and film a game and talk to people about 9/11; what better a setting to immerse ones self into Texas rural life than high school football." The Texas border is only a few miles away. We decide to take an abrupt right turn on Highway 23 (maybe it's a state road, and not a highway, not sure) and about 15 minutes later we come across a sign that reads, "Welcome to Texas: Drive Friendly, the Texas Way." I slowed to 75 mph. read on

Democracy Now |
Before a joint session of Congress, President Obama laid out a $447 billion package of tax cuts and new government spending Thursday night to help stimulate the economy and create new jobs. We speak with Dedrick Muhammad, senior director for economic programs for the NAACP, and Scott Paul, founding executive director of the Alliance for American Manufacturing. Watch/Listen/Read Texas Gov. Rick Perry was back on the campaign trail at last night's Republican presidential debate, where he questioned the science behind human-caused global warming. On Wednesday, Perry announced he was returning home to focus on a historic wildfire season in which some 3.6 million acres have burned-an area larger than the size of Connecticut. Perry has used the crisis to complain the federal government is not acting fast enough to assist firefighters, but critics have been quick to note the governor has slashed the budget for the Texas Forest Service, the first line of fire defense for most of the state. We speak with Forrest Wilder, reporter with The Texas Observer. Watch/Listen/Read A new report by the Center for American Progress called "Fear, Inc.: The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America" shows how a small group of self-proclaimed experts backed by a host of donors are spreading fear and hostility toward Muslims in the United States. We speak with one of the report's authors, Faiz Shakir, vice president of the Center for American Progress and editor-in-chief of ThinkProgress.org. Watch/Listen/Read As former Vice President Dick Cheney publishes his long-awaited memoir, we speak to Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell. "This is a book written out of fear, fear that one day someone will 'Pinochet' Dick Cheney," says Wilkerson, alluding to the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who was arrested for war crimes. Wilkerson also calls for George W. Bush and Cheney to be held accountable for their crimes in office. We also speak to Salon.com political and legal blogger Glenn Greenwald about his recent article on Cheney, "The Fruits of Elite Immunity." Watch/Listen/Read As the nation prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a pair of leading internet archivists are launching an ambitious project called "Understanding 9/11: A Television News Archive," which catalogs 3,000 hours of domestic and international TV news footage from 20 channels from the week around September 11, 2001. We feature excerpts of coverage from the global archive and speak with its organizers, Brewster Kahle and Rick Prelinger. Watch/Listen/Read

Setting Their Hair on Fire By PAUL KRUGMAN NYTimes |
First things first: I was favorably surprised by the new Obama jobs plan, which is significantly bolder and better than I expected. It's not nearly as bold as the plan I'd want in an ideal world. But if it actually became law, it would probably make a significant dent in unemployment. Of course, it isn't likely to become law, thanks to G.O.P. opposition. Nor is anything else likely to happen that will do much to help the 14 million Americans out of work. And that is both a tragedy and an outrage. Before I get to the Obama plan, let me talk about the other important economic speech of the week, which was given by Charles Evans, the president of the Federal Reserve of Chicago. Mr. Evans said, forthrightly, what some of us have been hoping to hear from Fed officials for years now. read on

This excerpt, which the Guardian entitled "I Was the Most Hated Man in America," is from one of my nonfiction short stories in the book, a story called "The Execution of Michael Moore." The publication of this piece has generated an intense reaction from those who've read it (mostly in the UK), so I thought those who live in my own country would also like to see it. | Occupy Wall Street September 17th |
Our occupation of Wall Street is less than 5 days away ... do we have it together? The perpetrators of the massive financial fraud have been allowed to slip quietly from the scene and continue business as usual. Our elected representatives in Washington have become so tightly intertwined with the financiers and bankers that public accountability has all but vanished. #OCCUPYWALLSTREET is all about breaking up that cosy relationship between money and politics and bringing the perpetrators of the financial crash of 2008 to justice. On September 17, 20,000 of us will descend on Wall Street, the iconic financial center of America, set up a peaceful encampment, hold a people's assembly to decide what our one demand will be, and carry out an agenda of full-spectrum, absolutely nonviolent civil disobedience the likes of which the country has not seen since the freedom marches of the 1960s. From our encampment we will launch daily smart mob forays all over lower Manhattan ... peaceful, creative happenings in front of Goldman Sachs; the SEC; the Federal Reserve; the New York Stock Exchange ... and maybe even, if we can figure out where they're being held, at the sites of Obama's private $38,500 per person fundraising events happening somewhere in Manhattan on Sept. 19 and 20. Our strategy will be that of the master strategist Sun Tzu: "appear at points which the enemy must hasten to defend; march swiftly to places where you are not expected." With a bit of luck, and if fate is on our side, we may be able to turn all of lower Manhattan into a site of passionate democratic contestation - an American Tahrir Square. We will do all this with peace in our hearts. Our unshakable commitment to nonviolence will give us the spiritual strength we need to inspire the nation and to ultimately triumph in the weeks and maybe months of struggle that will unfold after September 17. | | Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued? Actually, I don't think it's me, and it's not really that odd. What happened after 9/11 - and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not - was deeply shameful. The atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons. A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits - people who should have understood very well what was happening - took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity? The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it. I'm not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons. | |

How Rick Perry Has Been on the Public Dole His Whole Life by Jim Hightower | Presidential wannabe Rick Perry is flitting all around the country -- hither, thither and yon -- spreading little "Perry Tales" about himself and the many wonders he has worked as governor of Texas. His top Perry Tale is a creationist story about what he has modestly branded "The Texas Miracle." While the rest of the country is mired in joblessness, says the miracle worker, his state has added 1.2 million jobs during his 10-yea read on

Meet the Shady Dallas Mega-Billionaire Industrialist Pouring Money into Rick Perry's Coffers |
Like so many Republican officials of the tea party persuasion, Rick Perry despises the Environmental Protection Agency-a feeling he has expressed repeatedly in speeches, lawsuits, legislation and even a book titled "Fed Up!" Perhaps that is only natural for the governor of Texas, a "dirty energy" state where the protection of air, water and human health rank well below the defense of oil company profits for most politicians. But Perry has at least one other reason for smacking down those bureaucrats so eagerly. When environmental regulators do their job properly, that can mean serious trouble for Perry's largest political donors. read on
