Former Florida governor and senator Bob Graham is calling on President Obama to reopen the investigation into the Sept. 11 attacks after new information has emerged about the possible role of prominent Saudis in the 9/11 plot. Graham joins us to discuss the news he's called "the most important thing about 9/11 to surface in the last seven or eight years." As the former chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, a post he held on September 11, 2001, Graham chaired the Congressional Joint Inquiry into the attacks. Watch/Listen/Read Near the end of Monday's Republican presidential debate, Republican Rep. Ron Paul of Texas drew boos from the crowd and a rebuke from other candidates on the podium when he criticized U.S. foreign policy in discussing the roots of the 9/11 attacks. Our guest, Columbia University Professor Mahmood Mamdani, responded to Dr. Paul's comments by saying, "He sounds like a professor. I mean, he's trying to educate his audience, and the audience is not ready to be educated. It wants to be rallied to a cause that it doesn't have to think about." Watch/Listen/Read Ten years ago, at a time when lawmakers from both sides of the aisle joined together to authorize endless war, Noam Chomsky's was the leading voice to call for the United States to rethink its actions in the Middle East and across the globe. His 2001 book, simply titled "9-11," became a surprise bestseller. The book collected a series of interviews Chomsky had given on the roots of the 9/11 attacks and his prescription for a just response. A decade later, Chomsky has just released an updated version titled "9-11: Was There an Alternative?" which refers to the U.S. assassination of Osama bin Laden and the continuity Chomsky sees between the Bush administration's foreign policy and President Obama's. Texas in the News | Texas' voter ID law faces federal scrutiny The contentious issue of voter ID in Texas is now in the hands of federal officials. On Wednesday, several civil-rights groups filed documents with the Justice Department, asking officials to oppose any early approval or "pre-clearance" of the measure, which fully takes effect in Texas on Jan. 1. read on Obama coming to Dallas Oct. 4 The White House confirmed today that President Barack Obama will be in Dallas on Oct. 4 for at least one event. No details of Obama's visit are yet available. He's recently been touring different states to tout his jobs package. It's unclear if he will host a public rally in Dallas, attend a private fundraiser or both. In May, Obama came to Texas for a speech about immigration in El Paso and a fundraiser in Austin. Obama's last trip to North Texas, his first as president, was in August 2010 for a $15,000-a-plate fundraiser in Highland Park. The trip also included a stop in Austin. To commemorate the visit, the Dallas Republican Party drew several hundred people to an anti-Obama rally not far from where the fundraiser was held. -Aman Batheja Read more Texas poverty figures challenge Rick Perry jobs record Report published by non-partisan CPPP says poverty in Texas is higher than the rest of America - and growing faster Rick Perry said workers were flocking to Texas because of the economic climate he had created. Republican frontrunner Rick Perry has put his economic record as Texas governor at the heart of his presidential nomination campaign, but a report has painted a stark picture of rising unemployment and spiraling poverty in the state. The policy paper, published by the Austin-based non-partisan Center for Public Policy Priorities, said poverty in Texas was currently higher than the rest of the US and was growing faster. The paper said poverty rates in Texas had jumped from 17.3% in 2009 to 18.4% in 2010, and compared them to figures for the US of 14.3% in 2009, rising to 15.1% in 2010. That suggests there are currently around 4.6m Texans living in poverty, which is currently defined as an income of $22,113 a year for a family of four. Read on Guardian UK

Texas Democratic Women of Collin County presents Smarter Water for North Texas |
| Smarter Water for North Texas _ Alliance Outreach |
Monday September 26, 2011 is the next General Meeting of Texas Democratic Women of Collin County. Join us at 6:45pm at the Preston Ridge Campus of Collin College, 9700 Wade Blvd Frisco, Texas, Founders Hall, Shawnee Room F148. As always there will be refreshments and time to socialize. September's meeting features Bobette Brasfield of Texas Conservation Alliance, which runs a program called Smarter Water for North Texas. Ms. Brasfield says, "The good news is that we have enough water in existing reservoirs to meet our water needs for the next 50 plus years! We can avoid new reservoirs which would destroy many thousands of acres of bottomland hardwood forest while uprooting families and harming existing local economies if we make the right allocation and <make wise> decisions." Join us as we explore the low-impact water supply options that will allow us to avoid the monetary and human costs associated with unnecessary new reservoirs. http://www.tcatexas.org/ |
