There are also some great progressive talk news, some articles you shouldn't have missed and a wonderful guide to using Twitter. Don't learn the hard way especially if you also tweet for an organization ...;-)

In your ear and on the rise: Stand-up Maron.. |
Who says there are no second acts in American lives? Well, F. Scott Fitzgerald did. But with apologies to one of America's finest novelists, Marc Maron is proving him wrong. Again. The 47-year-old, who headlines Comedy Works Thursday through June 19, is arguably entering the third act of his life - the one that finds him touring nationally, signing a book deal and grabbing some long-awaited mainstream recognition. Act I: Maron enters New York's alternative comedy scene via Boston in the '90s with a sharp, cynical stand-up act that draws praise from contemporaries such as Janeane Garofalo, Sarah Silverman and David Cross. Act II: Maron gets sober - and divorced - and embarks upon a radio career with Air America, the ill-fated liberal talk network. Act III: Maron gets divorced (again) and develops his "WTF With Marc Maron" podcast, at last reaching a level of success that comedy insiders always thought he deserved. read on |

Dale Maharidge, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author, inspired Bruce Springsteen to write the songs "Youngstown" and "The New Timer" with his first book, "Journey to Nowhere: The Saga of the New Underclass." Maharidge's most recent book, "Someplace Like America: Tales from the New Great Depression," is a reported retrospective on his 30 years of covering the working poor and chronically unemployed. He and photographer Michael Williamson traveled more than half a million miles around the United States, reporting the story of how workers' lives have gotten steadily worse. We speak to Maharidge about his work and how it came to inspire some of Springsteen's most notable socially conscious songs. Watch/Listen/Read Located some 80 miles north of Las Vegas, the secret U.S. military base Area 51 in Nevada was established in the 1950s to build and test hi-tech spy and war planes including the U-2, the stealth bomber and surveillance drones. Located inside the Nevada Test and Training Range, Area 51 also played a key role in nuclear weapon tests. For decades, the government denied Area 51 even existed, but in recent years many CIA and military documents have been declassified. We speak with Annie Jacobsen, author of the new book "Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base." Watch/Listen/Read

Around the same time Representative Weiner was dealing with the fallout of an apparent Twitter hack, Republican Ohio House Speaker William G. Batchelder also had a Twitter problem: an "unknown intruder" hacked into his official account. | Medicare Saves Money by Paul Krugman NYTimes | Every once in a while a politician comes up with an idea that's so bad, so wrongheaded, that you're almost grateful. For really bad ideas can help illustrate the extent to which policy discourse has gone off the rails. And so it was with Senator Joseph Lieberman's proposal, released last week, to raise the age for Medicare eligibility from 65 to 67. Like Republicans who want to end Medicare as we know it and replace it with (grossly inadequate) insurance vouchers, Mr. Lieberman describes his proposal as a way to save Medicare. It wouldn't actually do that. But more to the point, our goal shouldn't be to "save Medicare," whatever that means. It should be to ensure that Americans get the health care they need, at a cost the nation can afford. |
