Democracy Now |
Veteran investigative reporter Seymour Hersh assesses the popular uprisings sweeping the Middle East and North Africa amidst ongoing U.S. wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Watch/Listen/Read The internet is increasingly becoming an echo chamber in which websites tailor information according to the preferences they detect in each viewer. The top 50 websites collect an average of 64 bits of personal information each time we visit-and then custom-design their sites to conform to our perceived preferences. What impact will this online filtering have on the future of democracy? We speak to Eli Pariser, author of The Filter Bubble: What the Internet Is Hiding from You. Watch/Listen/Read *** see book below ! Today Vermont is set to make history by becoming the first state in the nation to offer universal, single-payer healthcare when Gov. Peter Shumlin signs its healthcare reform bill into law. The Vermont plan, called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will attempt to stem rising medical care prices and provide universal coverage. We speak with Dr. Deb Richter, president of Vermont Health Care for All. Watch/Listen/Read Today Bob Dylan turns 70 years old, and we air a special program on his life and music. We speak with the legendary WBAI broadcaster Bob Fass, the host of Radio Unnameable, who interviewed Dylan several times. We play excerpts from the Pacifica Radio Archives of a 1962 performance by Dylan on Fass's show and an interview when he was only 20 years old. We also speak with music writer Elizabeth Thomson, co-editor of the newly reissued book, No Direction Home: The Life and Music of Bob Dylan, written by the late Robert Shelton. And we feature part of Dylan's 1963 performance at the March on Washington and hear why Dylan refused to sing out at protests against the Vietnam War. Watch/Listen/Read We speak with environmental activist Robert Kennedy, Jr., and filmmaker Bill Haney about the new documentary, The Last Mountain, which premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival. The film chronicles the fight against coal mining across Appalachia and Massey Energy's devastating practice of mountaintop removal to extract layers of coal. Watch/Listen/Read |

The Filter Bubble: What the Internet Is Hiding from You By Eli Pariser List Price: $25.95 Price: $14.74 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. BUY HERE An eye-opening account of how the hidden rise of personalization on the Internet is controlling-and limiting-the information we consume. In December 2009, Google began customizing its search results for each user. Instead of giving you the most broadly popular result, Google now tries to predict what you are most likely to click on. According to MoveOn.org board president Eli Pariser, Google's change in policy is symptomatic of the most significant shift to take place on the Web in recent years-the rise of personalization. In this groundbreaking investigation of the new hidden Web, Pariser uncovers how this growing trend threatens to control how we consume and share information as a society-and reveals what we can do about it. |

Drinking Liberally Addison Drinking Liberally Addison celebrates its 6th birthday on Thursday June 16th 2011! June 2005 was both a good and bad time in DFW. George W Bush had been sworn into office for the 2nd time 6 months prior. BAD. Sheriff Lupe Valdez was sworn in for the 1st time that year, marking the initial snowball of Blue to start rolling in Dallas County, that later turned into an avalanche. GOOD. But Lupe alone was not enough, and we were fed up! I heard about this thing that started in New York City (New York City?!) in 2003 that sounded great. And what better way to vent that frustration, and turn it into a positive, than with some liberal libations and like minded liberals? Thus we were born and haven't stopped since. Join us again for your 6th year in a row, or even your first time, at The Quarter at 15201 Addison Road starting at 6pm on June 16th. Commentary: Texas offers a lesson in how not to run a prison system California should have learned a lesson from Texas in how not to operate prisons. | Robert Reich | Why Washington Isn't Doing Squat About Jobs and Wages | Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "The silence is deafening. While the rest of the nation is heading back toward a double dip, Washington continues to obsess about future budget deficits. Why? Republicans don't want to do anything about jobs and wages... Democrats, meanwhile, don't want to admit the recovery has stalled.... But there's a third reason for Washington's inaction. It's not being talked about - which is itself evidence of the problem. The unemployed are politically invisible. They don't make major campaign donations. They don't lobby Congress. There's no National Association of Unemployed People." Read the Article

Charges are dropped against talk host Nicole Sandler | Nicole Sandler Radio-Info previously reported on the arrest of progressive talk host Nicole Sandler, who was taken out in handcuffs from a Florida town hall meeting held by Tea Party Republican Rep. Allen West on April 26, and held in jail for 18 hours. The former Air America and Miami WINZ-AM (940) host, who currently hosts an internet show, was with a group of people asking questions regarding proposed budget cuts to Medicare. According to the police report, the arresting officer alleged that Sandler "became very disruptive and loud ... Her behavior caused many of the audience members to enter into a verbal altercation with her that threatened to become physical. I (the officer) instructed defendant to leave the property more than a dozen times ... she became physically aggressive with this officer, pushing me several times. Defendant was finally placed under arrest." You can read the complete arrest report here. The Broward County Florida chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union announced they would represent Sandler if the case had gone to court.
