BUSH ON WATERBOARDING: "DAMN RIGHT!" THE PEOPLE'S RESPONSE: "DAMN WRONG!" | As George W. Bush, having openly confessed to authorizing the use of waterboarding, begins a tour to sell his memoir, "Decision Points," concerned citizens will come together to remind the public that waterboarding is torture and torture is a crime under domestic and international law and perpetrators must be held accountable to avoid setting precedent. According to Andy Worthington, director of the documentary film, "Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo, "... it will be interesting to see how many media outlets allow the former President the opportunity to try to salvage his reputation, how many are distracted by his spat with Kanye West or his claim that he thought about replacing Dick Cheney as Vice President in 2004, and how many decide that, on balance, it would be more honest to remind readers and viewers of the former President's many crimes - including the illegal invasion of Iraq and the authorization of the use of torture..." Undoubtedly, the Decision Points book tour will be not only a means of generating income, but an attempt to justify illegalities and rehabilitate Mr. Bush's dismal reputation as a statesman. To remind the public that the truth cannot be buried or changed and that no one is above the law, a demonstration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9, outside the Bush book-signing event at Borders Book Store, 10720 Preston Rd., Dallas, TX 75230. contact: jharris866@aol.com, shadijawad@aol.com |

Justice for Sale? We speak to attorney Adam Skaggs of the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law and Carolyn Jenison of One Iowa, the state's largest LGBT advocacy organization. The Dallas Area Christian Progressive Alliance 2011 Speaker Series FAITH VOICES ON JUSTICE |
"The churches in this country by and large do a pretty good job of providing relief" "I don't think it's the government's responsibility to take care of the poor." "Justice is about stoning people." Perhaps you've heard these or similar comments made by our Christian sisters and brothers when discussing our obligation toward those living in poverty and those who are oppressed. The Dallas Area Christian Progressive Alliance and the Church in Society and Education Commissions of Northaven United Methodist Church are sponsoring a speaker series for 2011 to address the subject of the Biblical call to "do justice." The series speakers will explore this topic from the perspective of the Christian and Jewish faith and from other faith traditions, and some will focus on how to answer the call. The first speaker will be Dr. John Holbert, Perkins School of Theology, on Thursday, January 13, 2011. More details to follow. Join us for our final meeting of the year, Saturday, November 13, 2:00pm at Northaven United Methodist Church. At the meeting, Patty Harvey will discuss an ambitious new study on homosexuality and faith that has just been released that promises to transcend the long-contentious "battle over the Bible." Published by Northaven United Methodist Church in Dallas, the curriculum for small groups and individuals is entitled "This I Know," and it has been produced as a companion to the award-winning 2007 documentary "For the Bible Tells Me So." National evangelical leader Brian McLaren and renowned Jesus scholar Marcus Borg are among the noted faith authorities who have contributed original essays to the multi-week non-denominational study. Bill Moyers: "Welcome to the Plutocracy!" |
Bill Moyers, Truthout: "Howard [Zinn] championed grassroots social change and famously chronicled its story as played out over the course of our nation's history. More, those stirring sagas have inspired and continue to inspire countless people to go out and make a difference. The last time we met, I told him that the stories in A People's History of the United States remind me of the fellow who turned the corner just as a big fight broke out down the block. Rushing up to an onlooker he shouted, 'Is this a private fight, or can anyone get in it?' For Howard, democracy was one big public fight and everyone should plunge into it. That's the only way, he said, for everyday folks to get justice - by fighting for it." Read the Article |

| Barack Obama, Phone Home By FRANK RICH |
AFTER his "shellacking," President Obama had to do something. But who had the bright idea of scheduling his visit to India for right after this election? The Democrats' failure to create jobs was at the heart of the shellacking. Nothing says "outsourcing" to the American public more succinctly than India. But the White House didn't figure this out until the eve of Obama's Friday departure, when it hastily rebranded his trip as a jobs mission. Perhaps the president should visit one of the Indian call centers policing Americans' credit-card debts to feel our pain.
