Arianna Huffington, Mary Matalin Together at Last on the Radio

The New York Observer Mon, 21 Jun 2010 08:55 AM PDT

Mark Green, Observer columnist and former Air America president, has started a weekly talk show on 77 WABC radio featuring Arianna Huffington and Mary Matalin. The show is called Both Sides Now and the idea is for the two ideologically opposed, though very respectful, women to have it out on different issues and Mr. Green to play middle man. In the first episode, Mr. Green asked the pair about ... here

Academy Award-Winning Filmmaker Oliver Stone Tackles Latin America's Political Upheaval in "South of the Border", US Financial Crisis in Sequel to Iconic "Wall Street"

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone has taken on three American presidents in JFK, Nixon and W. and the most controversial aspects of the war in Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July. He looked at the greed of the financial industry in the Hollywood hit Wall Street and its forthcoming sequel. In South of the Border, his latest documentary out this week in the United States, Stone takes a road trip across South America, meeting with seven presidents about the revolution sweeping the continent. The leftist transformation in the region might be ignored or misrepresented as nothing but "anti-Americanism" in the corporate media, but this film seeks to tell a different story. Stone joins us along with the film's co-writer, the Pakistani British author and activist Tariq Ali.

Naomi Klein | Gulf Oil Spill: A Hole in the World

Naomi Klein, Guardian UK
"Obama cannot order pelicans not to die (no matter whose ass he kicks). And no amount of money - not BP's $20 billion, not $100 billion - can replace a culture that's lost its roots."

The Deepwater Horizon disaster is not just an industrial accident - it is a violent wound inflicted on the Earth itself. In this special report from the Gulf coast, a leading author and activist shows how it lays bare the hubris at the heart of capitalism

Janeane Garofalo talks to AV Club

Although she once described herself as an "underachiever" and "straight-C student" with typical self-deprecation, Janeane Garofalo is almost better known these days for making ambitious political arguments than for cracking jokes. Garofalo's conversion from sarcastic slacker to impassioned activist began during the George W. Bush administration, when she slowly drifted away from her stand-up career and movie roles to become a host on the recently shuttered liberal radio station Air America. Since then, Garofalo has become a ubiquitous presence on political debate shows ranging from Countdown With Keith Olbermann to the notably less welcoming Fox And Friends, and her unapologetic remarks-specifically her assertion last year that Tea Party protestors are "racist rednecks"-have made her a favorite target of right-wing hate. But Garofalo hasn't entirely abandoned entertainment for punditry: In the past few years, she's turned up in popular fare like Ratatouille and 24 while still performing stand-up regularly, with her latest comedy special (and first in more than a decade) If You Will debuting Saturday, June 26, on pay-cable channel EPIX. Before the show's première, The A.V. Club called Garofalo ostensibly to talk about comedy-although, as with her career of late, politics ended up dominating the conversation.

Sam Seder on Social Security: Are We In 2005, or 2010?

Sam Seder gives voice to the confusion many are having: after Democrats successfully fought off George Bush's attempts to gut Social Security in 2005, why did Obama pack his deficit commission in 2010 with people like co-chair Alan Simpson, who are dead set on doing the same thing?
BTW, if you haven't subscribed to Sam's YouTube channel, it's always a good idea.

Worse Than a Nightmare
By BOB HERBERT

President Obama can be applauded for his decisiveness in dispatching the chronically insubordinate Stanley McChrystal, but we are still left with a disaster of a war in Afghanistan that cannot be won and that the country as a whole will not support.

No one in official Washington is leveling with the public about what is really going on. We hear a lot about counterinsurgency, the latest hot cocktail-hour topic among the BlackBerry-thumbing crowd. But there is no evidence at all that counterinsurgency will work in Afghanistan. It's not working now. And even if we managed to put all the proper pieces together, the fiercest counterinsurgency advocates in the military will tell you that something on the order of 10 to 15 years of hard effort would be required for this strategy to bear significant fruit.

Human Rights Initiative of North Texas

What does a human rights activist look like? Where do they live?
Perhaps in New York, where the United Nations is headquartered,
or perhaps Washington, DC.

Or Dallas. Yes, the struggle for freedom and equality around the
world lives in Dallas, Texas, too.

At Human Rights Initiative.

We are lawyers and social workers, pastors and students. We are
regular working people.

Through a network of dedicated volunteers, Human Rights
Initiative helps those who have suffered terrible wrongs at home
for worshipping their God. For speaking out against oppression.
For being women.

We provide legal representation and social services free of
charge to those who have fled persecution and arrived in Dallas,
Texas with nothing. No family, no friends. No money. And often,
very little hope.

At Human Rights Initiative, we provide the resources - the
hope - these courageous people need to leave their
persecutors behind and begin anew

U.S. Sen. Al Franken is stepping into the pages of a new comic book.

U.S. Sen. Al Franken is stepping into the pages of a new comic book.

A biographical comic called "Political Power: Al Franken" goes on sale on Wednesday.

It's the latest in a line of comic books featuring politicians from Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama.

The Minnesota Democrat is a former "Saturday Night Live" star who won his seat from Republican Norm Coleman last year in a contest that dragged eight months past the election.

The 32-page comic book from Bluewater Productions of Vancouver, Wash., explores Franken's career and his election.

The cover features a portrait of Franken standing before the American flag and a Minnesota flag.

Hate Corporate Radio? Well Speak Up-the FCC Is Listening

Conservative radio talk show host Al Roney offered listeners a local perspective on WGY, an AM station in Latham, N.Y. That is, until the Clear Channel-owned station replaced Roney's morning show with canned programming. In February, he was fired, and Glenn Beck's nationally syndicated show-far less interested in life in Latham than Roney-took over his slot.
"I like the local focus that (Roney) brought to the radio," Eric Sutton told the Albany Times Union, "and I really think we're going to miss that. There's nobody else talking about the local disgraces that are going on."
Of course none of this is shocking news. Since Congress lifted the limits on local radio station ownership in 1996, mega corporations like Clear Channel have been swooping in to communities to buy stations, fire local staff and replace the local shows with computer-generated playlists and syndicated (mostly right-wing) talk show hosts broadcasting from miles-and even states-away.
