Thousands of bodies still lay under rubble. We begin today's show in Port-Au-Prince outside what remains of the Montana Hotel where some 200 people died in the earthquake. We speak to Patrick Elie, a longtime Haitian democracy activist and Haiti's former Secretary of State for Public Security."We are a people who can fend for ourselves," Elie said. "We have a vision of where we want to go so we do need friends but we don't need people to think for us or to pity us and that is probably this attitude that is playing a part in the aid not being forthcoming." Oliver Stone Tells the Real Story of the Leftist Latin American Leaders Transforming the Continent By Daniela Perdomo, AlterNet After decades of military dictatorships and IMF puppetry in Latin America, the southern cone of the New World is slowly but surely moving toward reformist, left-leaning governance. Don't underestimate the power of that revelation, warns bestselling author and Vanity Fair contributing editor Junger (The Perfect Storm). The war in Afghanistan contains brutal trauma but also transcendent purpose in this riveting combat narrative. Junger spent 14 months in 2007-2008 intermittently embedded with a platoon of the 173rd Airborne brigade in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, one of the bloodiest corners of the conflict. The soldiers are a scruffy, warped lot, with unkempt uniforms-they sometimes do battle in shorts and flip-flops-and a ritual of administering friendly beatings to new arrivals, but Junger finds them to be superlative soldiers. Junger experiences everything they do-nerve-racking patrols, terrifying roadside bombings and ambushes, stultifying weeks in camp when they long for a firefight to relieve the tedium. Despite the stress and the grief when buddies die, the author finds war to be something of an exalted state: soldiers experience an almost sexual thrill in the excitement of a firefight-a response Junger struggles to understand-and a profound sense of commitment to subordinating their self-interests to the good of the unit. Junger mixes visceral combat scenes-raptly aware of his own fear and exhaustion-with quieter reportage and insightful discussions of the physiology, social psychology, and even genetics of soldiering. The result is an unforgettable portrait of men under fire. CSPAN BOOK: Sebastian Junger, War Author and journalist Sebastian Junger talks about his latest book which chronicles the experiences of soldiers fighting in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. Mr. Junger was embedded with 173rd Airborne Brigade's Battle Company at various times between June 2007 and June 2008. He discusses his book with Paul Rieckhoff, founder and executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Mr. Rieckhoff, an Iraq War veteran, is the author of Chasing Ghosts: Failures and Facades in Iraq - A Soldier's Perspective. Watch here | "Yes You Can, Mr President! The clandestine recordings of his serial audio assaults on his gal pal were instant Web and cable-TV sensations - at once a worthy rival to Hollywood's official holiday releases and a compelling sequel to his fabled anti- Semitic rant of 2006. A true showman, Gibson offered vitriol for nearly all tastes, aiming his profane fusillade at women, blacks and Latinos alike. The invective was tied together by a domestic violence subplot worthy of "Lethal Weapon." There was even a surprise comic coda, courtesy of Whoopi Goldberg, who, alone among Gibson's showbiz peers, used her television platform on "The View" to defend her buddy's good character. The Gibson tapes - in plain English and not requiring the subtitles of some of the star's recent spectacles - are a particularly American form of schadenfreude. There's little we enjoy more than watching a pampered zillionaire icon (Gibson's production company is actually named Icon) brought low. The story would end there - just another tidy morality tale in the profuse annals of Hollywood self-destruction from Fatty Arbuckle to Lindsay Lohan - were it not for Gibson's unique back story. Expensive utilities probably don't come up on recruiting pitches, but Dallas consumers pay a lot for their utilities, compared with other big cities, according to data from online consumer adviser WhiteFence.com. The all-in monthly cost of phone, TV, internet, electricity and gas is the fourth highest among major American cities. Only Baltimore, Houston and Orlando had higher monthly costs in the data compiled by Houston-based WhiteFence. | | |
