Finally, people who thought NPR was too balanced and Randi Rhodes-deficient had something to shove in their ear holes. It couldn't possibly fail. And yet, late last month, it did. Probably on account of some sort of vast right-wing conspiracy. Anyway, let us now take a few moments to remember the ragtag radio network that couldn't with this hand-picked collection of Colbert Report clips. Watch all here | Environment Texas- Interviews: Bill White and Farouk Shami | The two leading candidates for the Democratic Party nomination are former Houston Mayor Bill White and businessman Farouk Shami sat down to discuss their views on the environment. You can listen to the interviews on our podcast, "A Minute for the Environment," available on iTunes and on our blog: . Listen HERE | Democracy Now | As Dalai Lama Visits White House, an Excerpt of His 2003 Criticism of Iraq War As the Dalai Lama visits the White House, we air an excerpt of the his comments on the Iraq war in September 2003. Amy Goodman took part in a public dialog with the Dalai Lama and asked him for his views on the then-six-month-old invasion. Listen/Watch/Read Nobel Economist Joseph Stiglitz on Obama's Stimulus Plan, Debt, Climate Change, and "Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy" As President Obama defends the success of his one-year-old $787 billion stimulus package, we speak to Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who says the stimulus was both not big enough and too focused on tax cuts. Stiglitz is the author of the new book Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy, which analyzes the causes of the Great Recession of 2008 and calls for overcoming what he calls an "ersatz capitalism" that socializes losses but privatizes gains. Listen/Watch/Read George Monbiot: UK Inquiry "Toothless" and "Feeble" in Probing Origins of Iraq War As the Iraq war continues, Britain is in the midst of an ongoing public inquiry into the UK's role in the US-led war in 2003 invasion. The public hearings began in late November and the committee is expected to report its findings by June of this year. We speak to author and columnist George Monbiot, who has begun a campaign encouraging citizen's arrests of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair for crimes against peace in Iraq. Listen/Watch/Read Thomas Geoghegan on the Case for Busting the Filibuster Senate Republicans are currently using the filibuster to paralyze the Senate and derail Democratic initiatives, according a McClatchy Newspapers investigation. Since President Obama took office, Republican senators have used the filibuster to stall legislation on healthcare reform, global warming, and financial regulation and the confirmation of fifteen Obama nominees. Last week, Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Tom Harkin introduced a bill aimed at curtailing the filibuster. Their proposal would gradually reduce the number of votes required to overcome a filibuster, so a simple majority of fifty-one votes could eventually end debate. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid dismissed their efforts, noting that changing the rule would require sixty-seven votes. We speak with attorney and writer Thomas Geoghegan, a vocal advocate of ending the filibuster. Listen/Watch/Read | Jobs Saved : Interactive Map: One Year After Recovery | President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, or ARRA, into law one year ago today, on February 17, 2009. This signature piece of legislation has played a critical role in preventing another Great Depression. It included a mixture of tax cuts for businesses and families, infrastructure building and green investments, aids for states and localities, and help for those in need. It gave the economy the jumpstart it needed this past year, and it will continue to pump necessary money into the economy for the year to come. This new interactive map from the Center for American Progress displays state by state data on the estimated number of jobs saved or created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009. These pressing problems threaten all of us, Republicans and Democrats. If the nation is to solve its predicament, it will need the revival of a distinctly American approach: the neglected tradition of realism. Andrew J. Bacevich, uniquely respected across the political spectrum, offers a historical perspective on the illusions that have governed American policy since 1945. The realism he proposes includes respect for power and its limits; sensitivity to unintended consequences; aversion to claims of exceptionalism; skepticism of easy solutions, especially those involving force; and a conviction that the books will have to balance. Only a return to such principles, Bacevich argues, can provide common ground for fixing America's urgent problems before the damage becomes irreparable. | UNT Distinguished Lecture Series presents Dr. Cornel West | Distinguished Lecture Series presents Dr. Cornel West Feb 25, 2010 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM @ Main Auditorium Cornel West, University of Princeton professor and civil rights activist, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Main Auditorium Building. "I was thinking, 'This is the time which I came myself to enemy.' I was thinking, 'They might not let me go back.'" For Qureishi, what followed was an extraordinary journey: Ten days among a militant cell in northern Afghanistan, living and filming, as they try to attack an American supply route. The result--"Behind Taliban Lines"--offers a rare glimpse into the inner-workings of an insurgent cell who Qureishi witnesses plotting their attack, picking up support and weapons from locals, and helping to impose a strict Islamic law across the north, which threatens to become a new battlefront in the Afghan war. | | | | The Bankruptcy Boys by Paul Krugman NYT | | O.K., the beast is starving. Now what? That's the question confronting Republicans. But they're refusing to answer, or even to engage in any serious discussion about what to do. For readers who don't know what I'm talking about: ever since Reagan, the G.O.P. has been run by people who want a much smaller government. In the famous words of the activist Grover Norquist, conservatives want to get the government "down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub." But there has always been a political problem with this agenda. Voters may say that they oppose big government, but the programs that actually dominate federal spending - Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security - are very popular. So how can the public be persuaded to accept large spending cuts? But there has always been a political problem with this agenda.
