More on helping here Dallas Sierra Club : Join Us for the Annual Greenville Avenue St. Patrick's Day Parade The annual Greenville Ave. St. Patrick's Day Parade is one of the largest St. Patrick's Day parades in the country (~100K people, 100+ floats). Such a large event creates many tons of unnecessary waste, so we're SEEKING VOLUNTEERS to help make the parade greener. Join the Dallas Sierra Club Recycling Team and help divert as many recyclables as possible from the landfill! Last year, total recycling collection efforts yielded about 1200 lbs of material. In order to top that number this year, we need YOUR help! Volunteers can collect recycling from parade viewers or simply stroll along with our entry to promote the Sierra Club and conservation. In addition to the satisfaction and fun volunteers will receive from helping at the parade, they will also be given nifty green t-shirts and post-parade concert tickets. Come out and join us on Saturday, March 13th, from 9:30am-1:30pm. Please email stpaddysvolunteer@gmail.com (subject: Recycling Team) with questions or to participate. The blocked bill also affects several governmental agencies, rural television customers and doctors receiving Medicare payments. At the same time, Senate Banking Committee Chair Christopher Dodd has abandoned an idea proposed by President Obama and favored by consumer groups to create an independent Consumer Financial Protection Agency to protect consumers against abuses in mortgages, credit cards and other forms of lending. She's long been known as an advocate of No Child Left Behind, charter schools, standardized testing, and using the free market to improve schools. But she's had a radical change of heart, as chronicled in her latest book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education. Ravitch says, "The evidence says No Child Left Behind was a failure, and charter schools aren't going to be any better." Investigative journalist Greg Palast traveled to the West African country of Liberia to investigate how vulture funds have been operating there and why Liberia lost a $20 million case against two vulture funds in a British court. Listen/Watch/Read | Al Franken breaks down the halthcare bill passage | This week President Obama asked Congress to stand strong and finish the job of fixing our busted health insurance system. I couldn't agree more, and now we've got a plan to get this done. I'm calling this strategy "Pledge & Pass," and it's a simple, two-step plan for passing meaningful health insurance reform. I believe it's our job as public servants to actually serve the public, and ending the suffering of millions of Americans under our current system is exactly what our constituents expect and deserve. Here's the plan. Step 1. United States Senators pledge to fix elements of the bill that are not acceptable to many House members, and the House pass the Senate bill as is. Step 2. We in the Senate fulfill our pledge to the House, fix the elements that need fixing, and pass this critical legislation through a filibuster-proof budget process known as reconciliation. As I've said for years, letting perfect reform be the enemy of a good bill would be a tragic outcome for our constituents. Make no mistake about it; people are hurting as a result of decades of dithering on this issue, and it's past time we deliver real change. Every day, middle class families go bankrupt and lose their homes. Sick folks don't get the health care they need, and as a result they're sicker, they experience pain, and they watch their children experience pain. Every year, 45,000 people die because they lack health insurance, and it's long past time we put an end to it. It's time get a bill to the President's desk. Remember the story about activists that went to talk to FDR about wanting to see him enact Social Security? At the time, the President didn't have the votes in Congress to get it done. He said, "I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it." Make us do this. This is not about House vs. Senate, it's about Now vs. Never. If they pass it, we'll fix it. I didn't run for the Senate to walk away from the health care debate empty-handed, and with your support, we won't. | Snow Can't Stop Freedom to Marry Day in Dallas | Dallas - Against the backdrop of a rare amount of newly fallen snow, the city was a scene fit for a wedding. Al Franken (D-Minn.) is breaking out of his shell and positioning himself as an aggressive liberal presence in the Senate - particularly when it comes to one of the most controversial topics in Washington, D.C.: health care reform. "The first thing I wanted people to know was that I was there to be serious, that I would keep my head down and do my work," Franken said in his first extended national interview since he was seated in July. "Part of keeping my head down and doing my work was, as a Senator from a state that does this pretty well ... to study that and report back." Dionne Jr.: "Young Americans are the linchpin of a new progressive era in American politics. So why aren't Democrats paying more attention to them? The relative strength of conservatives in American politics since the 1980's was built on generational change: Voters whose views had been shaped by the New Deal were gradually replaced with the more cautious souls who came of age after FDR."
