Please get involved in some way this week with a shelter, pantry or food bank -the hunger statistics for Texas are off the charts, Texas is 2nd only to Mississippi in hunger. ( see article below)

We're asking tens of millions of people around the world to bring the capitalist consumption machine to a grinding - if only momentary - halt. We want you to not only stop buying for 24 hours, but to shut off your lights, televisions and other nonessential appliances. We want you to park your car, turn off your phones and log off of your computer for the day. Take the Plunge: You know what they say: a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Yo u feel that things are falling apart - the temperature rising, the oceans churning, the global economy heaving - why not do something? Take just one small step toward a more just and sustainable future. Make a pact with yourself: go on a consumer fast. Lock up your credit cards, put away your cash and opt out of the capitalist spectacle. You may find that it's harder than you think, that the impulse to buy is more ingrained in you than you ever realized. But you will persist and you will transcend - perhaps reaching the kind of epiphany that can change the world.

The Brits have done it again! The wildly popular island nation that offered up fabulous originals for fabulous Yank rip-offs like The Office, The Weakest Link, and Coupling (okay, maybe not Coupling) have now given us Have I Got News For You, a quiz show chock-full of political antics and hilarious hijinks. Premiering on NBC and hosted by Sam Seder of Air America fame, the show will feature team captains Michael Ian Black and Greg Giraldo squaring off with celeb compatriots on topical questions and current events fare.

A pair of new government reports released this week paint a startling picture more than a year after the economic meltdown. On Tuesday, the New York Comptroller Office said Wall Street profits are set to exceed the record set three years ago. The four largest firms took in $22.5 billion in profits through September. Meanwhile, far more people are going hungry in the United States than previously thought. The Department of Agriculture estimates 50 million Americans, including a quarter of all children, struggled to get enough to eat last year. We speak to veteran journalist Robert Scheer.

Ms. Maddow pretended to celebrate the passage of a health care overhaul bill in the House, calling it "potentially a huge generational win for the Democratic Party" - but then halted the triumphant music and called it an "electoral defeat."
The Stupak amendment, she said, was "the biggest restriction on abortion rights in a generation." Then she wondered aloud about the consequences for Democrats "if they don't get women or anybody who's pro-choice to ever vote for them again." She returned to the subject the next four evenings in a row.

| | Hungry America: food insecurity, state by state | |  It may be the world's richest nation, but the US is no stranger to startling poverty. A new report from the US Department of Agriculture says that food insecurity is the highest in America since the survey began. Food insecurity - defined by the USDA as when "food intake ... was reduced and their eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year because the household lacked money and other resources for food" - afflicted 14.6% of Americans in 2008. Ie, some 50 million people were too poor to guarantee being able to put food on the table.
The report has been described by Barack Obama as "unsettling". According to the Washington Post:
Last year, people in 4.8 million households used private food pantries, compared with 3.9 million in 2007, while people in about 625,000 households resorted to soup kitchens, nearly 90,000 more than the year before.

AT last the American right and left have one issue they unequivocally agree on: You don't actually have to read Sarah Palin's book to have an opinion about it. Last Sunday Liz Cheney praised "Going Rogue" as "well-written" on Fox News even though, by her own account, she had sampled only "parts" of it. On Tuesday, Ana Marie Cox, a correspondent for Air America, belittled the book in The Washington Post while confessing that she couldn't claim to have "completely" read it.
