Texas residents demand LGBT children's books be banned from public library |
Two LGBT-themed children's books have come under fire at a Granbury, Texas, public library. Dozens of community members have demanded that "My Princess Boy" and "This Day in June" be either banned from the Hood County Library or moved out of the children's section, WFAA-TV reports. http://is.gd/l3AoZm |
What Media Miss In Coverage Of Texas' Restrictive Anti-Abortion Legislation | NPR reported this as "both sides" - I am not amazed ! Media coverage of Texas' restrictive anti-abortion legislation often presents a false equivalence between arguments from proponents of the legislation and women's health advocates, despite medical experts agreement that such measures are dangerous to women. The Supreme Court temporarily blocked implementation of two provisions of Texas' extreme efforts to restrict abortion through a targeted regulation of abortion providers (TRAP) law. The provisions in question required all clinics providing abortions "in the state to meet the standards for 'ambulatory surgical centers,' including regulations concerning buildings, equipment and staffing," The New York Times explained, and required doctors who performed the procedure "to have admitting privileges at nearby hospital[s]." http://is.gd/TxWdPx |

Texas Democracy! Denton City Council Reverses Voters' Fracking Ban |
Remember when the voters in Denton, Texas went to the polls and voted to ban fracking operations from their city? Their City Council repealed it, on a 6-1 vote after Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas legislature made it illegal for cities to ban fracking. Leaders of a North Texas city have repealed a voter-approved ban on hydraulic fracturing by energy companies. http://is.gd/ew0yxw |

| The Laziness Dogma by Paul Krugman NYTimes | Americans work longer hours than their counterparts in just about every other wealthy country; we are known, among those who study such things, as the "no-vacation nation." According to a 2009 study, full-time U.S. workers put in almost 30 percent more hours over the course of a year than their German counterparts, largely because they had only half as many weeks of paid leave. Not surprisingly, work-life balance is a big problem for many people. | http://is.gd/AJOblt |
Whitewash: New Texas history books will downplay slavery, omit KKK and Jim Crow | Social studies books for Texas public schools will minimize the importance of slavery in the Civil War and omit any mention of both Jim Crow laws and the Ku Klux Klan, the Washington Post reported.
Lessons covering the Civil War will list the reasons behind the conflict as being, "sectionalism, states' rights and slavery," in that order. http://is.gd/sjzsts
