* I was hoping we broke Phoenix # it was an amazing crowd for hot Sunday afternoon in Dallas.

Today, Sanders took his Southwestern tour to Dallas and Houston. In Dallas, he spoke to nearly 10,000 people.
The senator condemned the Democratic Party's political strategy in the South, saying that it has "conceded half of the states in the national level." He said that when "childhood poverty in Texas is 27 percent, we've gotta take it on.  http://is.gd/ccnY5E

The model state of Texas denies birth certificates to children of immigrants born within its borders

One question: how is this legal? Not that Texas is known for its strict adherence to the Constitution. But in the last year, certain Texas counties have simply stopped issuing birth certificates to children born in the state to undocumented immigrants. Not to be a stickler for constitutional details here, but the first line of the Fourteenth Amendment states: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside."

Dallas Peace Centers Hails Diplomatic Breakthrough in Iran Agreement.

Dallas Peace Centers Hails Diplomatic Breakthrough in Iran Agreement.

The Dallas Peace Center hails the historic accord reached in Vienna between Iran and six world powers that will place strict limits on Iran's nuclear program. Under the 159-page deal, Iran will dismantle much of its nuclear infrastructure, and the United Nations, United States, and European Union will remove a wall of sanctions built around Iran over the past nine years.

 

Longtime Dallas Peace Center activist Jan Sanders said, "This agreement is an affirmation of the role of diplomacy over war. Collective negotiations that included seven countries give the agreement strength and enforceability. The House and Senate should quickly affirm the agreement and recognize the leadership of the U.S. in this diplomatic achievement."

 

Two working committees of Dallas Peace Center, the Middle East Peace Committee (MEPC) and the Nuclear Free World Committee (NFWC), have followed negotiations with Iran with keen interest over the last decade. Former Texas State Representative Lon Burnam, a member of the NFWC said, "This is a huge step towards a Nuclear Free Middle East, a goal we have advocated for many years." NFWC Chair, Mavis Belisle agreed, "The accord will not only prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, but also stop a potential war between the U.S. and Iran. It is a win-win situation for the whole world."

MEPC Chair Don Dillard said, "The agreement will strengthen the hands of moderates in Iran and will help shape the future of the country as a modern, forward looking nation".

Since 1982 the Dallas Peace Center has promoted peace and reconciliation and offered alternatives to war through dialog and diplomacy. DPC opposed U.S. wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua in the 1980s. More recently DPC has actively opposed wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria and called for lifting sanctions against Cuba and Iran.

FBI Joins Investigation Into 'Unfathomable' Death of Sandra Bland

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Friday announced it was joining the probe into the disturbing death of Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old black woman who died in police custody in Texas on Monday. http://is.gd/GdAw0z

Texas House District 67 Democrats Present the Issues: How HB40 Impacts Local Control

The House District 67 (HD 67) Democrats are working to involve and engage citizens in their Texas House District- east and central Plano, Allen and north Richardson-by informing them of the issues that will be important as we move into the 2016 election cycle.

On Saturday, July 25, the HD67 Democrats will hold their July meeting featuring guest speaker Sharon Wilson.

Wilson is an Organizer for EARTHWORKS Oil and Gas Accountability Project. A nationally known activist, she is on the front lines of the hydraulic fracturing, commonly referred to as fracking, issue. Her presentation will include a discussion of how Denton's fracking ban was passed. She will also update us on current efforts to repeal HB40, the new state law that strips away local control on fracking.

Plan now to be at Tino's Too Restaurant, 2205 Ave K in Plano 75074 (just south of Dairy Queen across from Public Storage) on Saturday, July 25. The meeting is scheduled from 8:30 - 10 am. The event is free, food and beverage are available for purchase.

Stonewall Democrats of Denton County invites you to celebrate Marriage Equality victory at the Supreme Court..  

 

Special guest speakers Tod M. King and Casey Cavalier. Tod & Casey were the first couple refused a marriage license in Denton County. With the national spotlight on Denton County's refusal, they successfully received their license on June 29.

Hillary Clinton gave her first big economic speech on Monday, and progressives were by and large gratified. For Mrs. Clinton's core message was that the federal government can and should use its influence to push for higher wages.

 

Conservatives, however - at least those who could stop chanting "Benghazi! Benghazi! Benghazi!" long enough to pay attention - seemed bemused. They believe that Ronald Reagan proved that government is the problem, not the solution. So wasn't Mrs. Clinton just reviving defunct "paleoliberalism"? And don't we know that government intervention in markets produces terrible side effects?
