Workers Memorial Day is April 28 |
As listed below, North Texans have at least three opportunities to commemorate workers who were killed or injured on the job. April 28 is the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and it's the day that labor chose to "Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living!" as Mother Jones put it so well. Worker safety is especially important this year because 1) the Steelworkers around Houston are still on their long long strike for worker safety and 2) the State Legislature still hasn't done anything about the explosion that wiped out West, Texas, not to mention the earlier one in Texas City. More than a thousand Texas teenagers have been ordered to lockup on charges that stem from missing school, often because they have unpaid court fines. The costs to their education are high. Some, like Serena Vela, never go back Read on ** Collin County In another case in Collin County, a 17-year-old girl who had already done one stint in jail was ordered to lockup again, this time for unpaid fines. She begged her mother to use money set aside for her high school graduation gift to pay the court, she and her mother said, because she couldn't tolerate the idea of spending more time behind bars. |

| Zombies of 2016 by Paul Krugman | Last week, a zombie went to New Hampshire and staked its claim to the Republican presidential nomination. Well, O.K., it was actually Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey. But it's pretty much the same thing. You see, Mr. Christie gave a speech in which he tried to position himself as a tough-minded fiscal realist. In fact, however, his supposedly tough-minded policy idea was a classic zombie - an idea that should have died long ago in the face of evidence that undermines its basic premise, but somehow just keeps shambling along. read on | |
