Willie Nelson: 'We've Got to Help' Texas Border Children

"Being scared and mistreated is not a good way to start off your life," country legend tells Rolling Stone

In Texas, there's a pretty good chance you'll see someone with a "Willie Nelson for President" bumper sticker, and it can sometimes seem like the singer is actually an elected official in his home state:

Excellent app lets you "BuyPartisan"

App lets you check if a banana is "red" or "blue"

A new app called BuyPartisan lets you scan barcodes of supermarket items to discover the political leanings of companies that make your favorite foods. The company behind the app, Spend Consciously, says it "allows you to find out whether what you are buying matches your own personal political beliefs."

The Huffington Post noted that the app isn't always accurate. If you scan a Chiquita banana, for example, you'll find donations from people and companies that bear the name Chiquita, but aren't related to the banana grower. Spend Consciously says that will be fixed.

The app also reveals that Kellogg's (K) boss, John Bryant, gave more to Democrats than the CEO of General Mills (GIS). For devoted partisans, that means Democrats can buy Frosted Mini Wheats, Special K and Raisin Bran, while Republicans can go for Cheerios, Trix and Fiber One.

The head of Spend Consciously, Matthew Colbert, told The Washington Post that he hopes users appreciate knowing that a fraction of their grocery bill goes to political contributions. The app uses data from the Center for Responsive Politics, the Sunlight Foundation and the National Institute on Money in State Politics.

Texas messes with Texas, pits landowners against pipeline-builders

Texas has a complicated relationship with oil. On the one hand, it's a state that's really into private property. More than 95 percent of land in the Lone Star State is privately owned. On the other hand, Texas is really into oil - both digging it up and moving it around.

Why We Fight Wars

Paul Krugman

A century has passed since the start of World War I, which many people at the time declared was "the war to end all wars." Unfortunately, wars just kept happening. And with the headlines from Ukraine getting scarier by the day, this seems like a good time to ask why.

Tax Avoidance du Jour: Inversion

In recent decisions, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court has made clear its view that corporations are people, with all the attendant rights. They are entitled to free speech, which in their case means spending lots of money to bend the political process to their ends. They are entitled to religious beliefs, including those that mean denying benefits to their workers. Up next, the right to bear arms?
