| AG Greg Abbott Bans Same-Sex Benefits In Cities, Counties & School Districts, Sorta |
Attorney General Greg Abbott, in an ironic twist of timing, has struck down the ability of cities, counties and school districts to offer domestic partner benefits. By almost any measure, today was a landmark day for the GLBT community, with all eyes focused on basketball player Jason Collins, the first and only gay working professional athlete in any major sport. However, that announcement, hailed by many in the NBA community, is being bookended in Texas with Abbott's decision that benefits cannot be created since the state cannot create a legal status identical or similar to marriage.

Rick Perry's target practice video is the talk of NRA meeting | Mix Governor Rick Perry, a Ted Nugent song, a military style rifle and an egg exploding during target practice, and you get the most talked about introduction video at this week's National Rifle Association meeting in Houston. The short video played just before Perry took the stage to a welcome applause from the crowd. It shows Perry taking aim at an egg from about 100 yards out with a LaRue Tactical rifle, which is made by a company that recently opened up shop in Texas. The video then shows Perry hitting metal targets like a marksman. read on

| The Chutzpah Caucus by Paul Krugman NYTimes |
At this point the economic case for austerity - for slashing government spending even in the face of a weak economy - has collapsed. Claims that spending cuts would actually boost employment by promoting confidence have fallen apart. Claims that there is some kind of red line of debt that countries dare not cross have turned out to rest on fuzzy and to some extent just plain erroneous math. Predictions of fiscal crisis keep not coming true; predictions of disaster from harsh austerity policies have proved all too accurate.

After Casting Key Fifth Vote For Bush, Justice O'Connor Now Regrets Bush v. Gore | Looking back, O'Connor said, she isn't sure the high court should have taken [Bush v. Gore]. "It took the case and decided it at a time when it was still a big election issue," O'Connor said during a talk Friday with the Tribune editorial board. "Maybe the court should have said, 'We're not going to take it, goodbye.'" The case, she said, "stirred up the public" and "gave the court a less-than-perfect reputation." read on

| Sen Al Franken: Cheetos Are Delicious |
Senator Al Franken says you wouldn't trust a doctor that's being paid by "big snack food" to give you advice if 98 out of 100 doctors were telling you something different. He says that's the same logic you should use with climate change where the vast majority of scientists say climate change is real and we need to do something
