Mayors Against Illegal Guns Launches 'Demand a Plan' Campaign- have you contacted your mayor yet ? |
The social advocacy organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns, co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Meninio, has launched a new PR campaign via social media in an effort to push American politicians to pass gun control legislation. The group also released a petition this week urging Americans to "join more than 750 mayors and 750,000 grassroots supporters to demand that President Obama and Congress step forward with a plan to end gun violence" on a national level. The three main objectives of the Demand a Plan campaign are: - Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America
- Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
- Make gun trafficking a federal crime, including real penalties for "straw purchasers"

Democracy Now |
We look at the newly sworn-in 113th Congress with The Nation magazine's political writer, John Nichols. The House now has 81 women, 61 of them Democrats, while the new Senate includes 20 women. There will be 44 African Americans in the House and one in the Senate. The Congress also includes nine new Latino members, making it the largest Latino class in history with 28 House seats and three Senate seats, two of whom are Republican. The new Congress also includes the first openly gay senator, Democrat Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, and the first open bisexual representative, Democrat Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, as well as more religious diversity with two two Buddhists, a Hindu and several Muslims. For the first time, white men will be a minority among House Democrats. Watch/Listen/Read We host a conversation about how to confront global warming with 350.org founder Bill McKibben and journalist Christian Parenti. Some have called 2013 "year zero" in the battle over climate change. This comes as 2012 was a year of extreme weather, from the melting of the Arctic to Superstorm Sandy, to the massive typhoon in the Philippines. It was also the warmest year on record in the United States, with massive droughts and frequent wildfires. In the U.S. presidential debates, neither of the major-party candidates took on climate change. But right after the election, McKibben and 350.org hit the road to begin a campaign focused on confronting the role of the fossil fuel industry -- what McKibben calls "Public Enemy Number One to the survival of our planetary civilization." The tour has since ended, but the fossil fuel divestment campaign it launched is growing. Many environmentalists welcome the fossil fuel divestment campaign as the new frontier in their activism, but some have raised questions about the effectiveness of a widespread fossil fuels divestment campaign, including Parenti, who wrote the recent article, "Problems With the Math: Is 350's Carbon Divestment Campaign Complete?" | The Big Fail By PAUL KRUGMAN |
It's that time again: the annual meeting of the American Economic Association and affiliates, a sort of medieval fair that serves as a marketplace for bodies (newly minted Ph.D.'s in search of jobs), books and ideas. And this year, as in past meetings, there is one theme dominating discussion: the ongoing economic crisis. This isn't how things were supposed to be. If you had polled the economists attending this meeting three years ago, most of them would surely have predicted that by now we'd be talking about how the great slump ended, not why it still continues. read on

Promised Land comes to Texas Film pits fracking versus Smalltown, USA | The much-awaited Matt Damon film, "Promised Land," opens across Texas today. It tells the story of a small town which is caught up in the economic frenzy and environmental storm that is hydraulic fracturing. Supporters of the Texas Drought Project are organizing groups to attend screenings--because this is a must-see for Texans! Hydraulic fracturing in Texas permanently removed at least 25 billion gallons of water from the hydrological cycle in 2011 alone. We say "at least" because industry figures are used to calculate these numbers--we don't have enough documenting of water use in Texas to know how much they've left out. Every day, another individual contacts this organization, or Texas Oil and Gas Accountability Project, or a group like the Sierra Club, to ask what can be done to help them with gas flaring, or water contamination, or family illness--all due to fracking. This film makes clear that the media hype about this new "gold rush" is only one side of the story. If the film sparks questions in your mind, or prompts water-cooler conversation at your office, remember, you can host a coffee/tea at your home, or a discussion at your place of worship or civic group--or have the movie "Gasland" shown at any of those--simply by contacting Alyssa Burgin at alyssa@texasdroughtproject.org. We'll come prepared with handouts showing data on health effects, agricultural consequences and water shortages and contamination. We hope your interest will be piqued by this film. The movie is open now on the screens listed below. Dallas--Angelika, AMC Northpark 15, Amstar 14, AMC Valley View, Cinemark 17, Studio Movie Grill, AMC Mesquite,Cinemark Lancaster-Desoto, Hollywood-McArthur, Cinemark Grand Prairie, Cinemark Cedar Hill, AMC Firewheel, Cinemark Vista Ridge, Angelika Plano, AMC Grapevine Mills, Cinemark Legacy

There Will Be Tar Sand |
Tarry Canadian bitumen is barreling its way to Texas via the Keystone XL pipeline. Will it bring energy independence or environmental calamity? One after the other, Cherokee County Sheriff's deputies wearing straw cowboy hats dragged bearded, zip-cuffed young men toward a waiting van. Strands of snot and spit set flowing by doses of pepper spray dangled from their bowed heads. A company man wearing a hardhat trailed them, recording a video of the arrests, for liability reasons. read on Dallas Observer
