The North Texas Tea Party Says Voting Machines Are Stealing Republican Votes |
There's been a lot of talk this election season about the specter of voter fraud, the idea that the polls will be flooded by illegal immigrants, household pets and dead people (all left-leaning constituencies), thereby cheapening real Americans' votes.
There has been relatively little concern expressed about the accuracy of voting machines, which has been a hot button issue in the past. read on

Meet Ted Cruz, "The Republican Barack Obama" |
The tea party wonder boy is sweeping the GOP establishment off its feet. Come January, he could turn the Senate upside down.
The night he won the runoff, all but guaranteeing he'd be the next Republican senator from Texas, Ted Cruz thanked everyone but the Academy. Speaking to a victory party packed with supporters munching on Chick-fil-A tenders, Cruz spent nine minutes going through the credits-"Dr. Ron Paul"; "our two little beautiful girls!"; "Sarah Palin"-each punctuated by rapturous applause and sheepish, head-bobbing laughter from the candidate read on Mother Jones |
Democracy Now | In the week when President Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney debated issues of foreign policy and the economy, we turn to world-renowned political dissident, linguist, author and MIT professor, Noam Chomsky. In a recent speech, Chomsky examined topics largely ignored or glossed over during the campaign: China, the Arab Spring, global warming, nuclear proliferation, and the military threat posed by Israel and the U.S. versus Iran. He reflects on the Cuban missile crisis, which took place 50 years ago this week and is still referred to as "the most dangerous moment in human history." He delivered this talk last month at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst at an event sponsored by the Center for Popular Economics. Chomsky's talk was entitled "Who Owns the World?" Watch/Listen/Read The former South Dakota senator and Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern has died at the age of 90. McGovern is best known for running against Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential election on a platform of withdrawing U.S. troops from Vietnam, reducing defense spending and providing amnesty to those who evaded the draft. | "The Revisionaries": Texas Schoolbook Battle - Crazier Than You Thought! |
An alarming, hilarious documentary revisits the Tea Party-fueled fight over evolution and Obama in school textbooks. Don McLeroy is a dentist in suburban Texas with the geeky, earnest manner of an American guy who has educated himself, however imperfectly, on a wide variety of topics. With his balding pate and high-waisted, pleated slacks, he makes Ned Flanders from "The Simpsons" look like Mick Jagger, circa 1969. I found myself utterly unable to resist McLeroy, who is likable and 100 percent sincere. He'd be a great neighbor, in large ways and small; the kind of guy who'd pull over on a busy highway to help a stranded motorist, while everybody else zoomed past. But as we see in the documentary "The Revisionaries," it'd be a mistake to consider him harmless just because he's a nice fellow. read on Alternet |

Progressive Star of Texas : Beto O'Rourke is on his way to shake up Congress |
Let's do what we think is right and not apologize for immigration. Let's tell people what a huge positive it is. It defines who we are as a country to the rest of the world. One of the major upsets of the 2012 election season has already happened, and it was a big win for progressives. In late May, Robert "Beto" O'Rourke won the Democratic primary contest in Texas' 16th Congressional District, which is largely comprised of the city of El Paso. The incumbent, Silvestre Reyes, who has held the seat since 1997, was well-funded and had been endorsed by both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. He was also ranked among the least progressive Democrats in the House by the website Progressive Punch. read on In These Times Magazine |
Volunteers needed for Video the Vote |
** We better be doing this in Texas with True the Vote sworn to intimidate TX voters. We all know what happens when elections are this close. Remember Ohio in 2004, and Florida in 2000? 2012 is no different. Already this year, we've seen hundreds of attempts to disenfranchise voters through complicated ID laws, purges of the voting rolls, and voter intimidation. And news reports say a Koch Brothers funded group plans to challenge voters on Election Day across the country. In past elections, it took months for the full story of voter disenfranchisement to emerge, and by that point it was too late. We can't let that happen this election. With the media focused on calling races, it's up to people like you to make sure that any instance of voter disenfranchisement is captured and immediately broadcast for the entire world to see. That's why Video The Vote is gearing up for a massive, nationwide monitoring effort on Election Day, and we need your help to make it happen. Will you join us this Election Day? If so, pleases sign up here |
ACLU Texas important voting rights, special needs access and problems at polling places reporting # numbers ! |
Earlier this year, the ACLU of Texas, the ACLU's Voting Rights Project, and other voting rights advocates persuaded a federal court to block a discriminatory law that would have limited the kinds of IDs voters could use to prove their identity at the polls. As a result, the photo voter ID law is NOT currently in effect, and you can vote using the same forms of ID you always have. Learn more about your right to vote below and share with your friends! | Medicaid on the Ballot By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times |
There's a lot we don't know about what Mitt Romney would do if he won. He refuses to say which tax loopholes he would close to make up for $5 trillion in tax cuts; his economic "plan" is an empty shell. Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times But one thing is clear: If he wins, Medicaid - which now covers more than 50 million Americans, and which President Obama would expand further as part of his health reform - will face savage cuts. Estimates suggest that a Romney victory would deny health insurance to about 45 million people who would have coverage if he lost, with two-thirds of that difference due to the assault on Medicaid read on | |

Frontline PBS Targeting the Electorate | The campaigns have more information about you then ever before. In 2012, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney's presidential campaigns are using that data, and controversial new tactics, to customize their messages to persuade you to support and donate to their campaigns. How they work -- and how they might be targeting you -- is the subject of two new digital exclusives at pbs.org/frontline. As a subscriber to this newsletter, you're among the first to see both. The Digital Campaign is a digital first documentary with correspondent Hari Sreenivasan of the PBS Newshour that goes inside the firms that sell campaigns data and the ways the Obama and Romney campaigns are using data to target voters. Watch It Targeting the Electorate is an interactive documentary experience that allows you to personalize the story to find out how campaigns are targeting you. Explore It Both are a part of FRONTLINE's Big Money 2012 initiative, a collaboration with APM's Marketplace investigating how money is reshaping the democratic process this election season. |

Annual March to Abolish the Death Penalty in Austin | This Saturday, November 3, is the 13th Annual March to Abolish the Death Penalty in Austin at the Texas Capitol. It starts at 2 PM. Meet on the South Side of the Capitol. Visit the March page on Facebook. The march will be led by four exonerated death row survivors who each spent many years on death row waiting to be executed for crimes they did not commit. They made it out of the system alive, but there are many innocent people still on death row and other innocents who did not make it out alive. Speakers at the march will also include family members of people currently on death row, community leaders, activists and others. We represent a growing number of people across Texas and the nation who oppose the death penalty. We need your help to show the world that opposition to the death penalty in Texas is growing, so please attend the march. Texas has executed 488 people since 1982 (as of Oct 28, 2012). The 250th execution under Rick Perry is scheduled for Halloween on October 31. Twelve people have been exonerated while on death row in Texas, the most recent being Anthony Graves in 2010. http://marchforabolition.org/
