Democracy Now |
Gore Vidal died on Tuesday at the age of 86 from complications of pneumonia. Vidal was a national icon who authored some 25 novels, several plays, two memoirs and multiple volumes of essays. He was one of the best-known and most prolific chroniclers of American history and politics, dedicating his work to critiquing the injustices of U.S. society. We air an excerpt of a Democracy Now! interview with Vidal from 2003 in the early stages of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Watch/Listen/Read While NBC has been airing wall-to-wall coverage of Olympic Games in London, little attention has been paid to what has taken place behind the scenes and just outside Olympic Park where many organizations are mobilizing to bring attention to many issues. We go to London to speak with scholar and former U.S. soccer team member Jules Boykoff, who has been in England since April researching a book on dissent and the Olympics. Watch/Listen/Read The famed award-winning investigative reporting team of Donald Barlett and James Steele have just published a new book, The Betrayal of the American Dream, a followup to their landmark bestseller, America: What Went Wrong? As Republicans and Democrats continue disputing who should bear the brunt of the tax burden, Barlett and Steele argue that America's middle class has been decimated over the years due to policies governing not only taxes but also bank regulations, trade deficits and pension funds. Their book chronicles how the American middle class has been systematically impoverished and its prospects thwarted in favor of a new ruling elite. Barlett and Steele have worked together for more than 40 years, sharing two Pulitzer Prizes and two National Magazine Awards. The duo joins us for the hour to discuss the assault on the middle class, the great tax heist, deregulation, the end of retirement, the outsourcing of U.S. jobs, the 2012 election and more. Texas Voter Registration Provisions Focus of Injunction |
A federal judge on Thursday granted a temporary injunction against five state provisions that affect voter registration in Texas. U.S. District Judge Gregg Costa of Galveston ruled that a law that prohibits third-party voter registrars from working in more than one county and another that mandates registrars in Texas be residents of the state violate the First Amendment. "During the 2011 legislative session, the Governor signed two bills that imposed a number of additional requirements," Costa wrote in his 94-page opinion. "The result is that Texas now imposes more burdensome regulations on those engaging in third-party voter registration than the vast majority of, if not all, other states." read on

Twitter Launches new barometer for the election |
Twitter Blog: "One glance at the numbers, and it's easy to see why pundits are already calling 2012 "the Twitter election." More Tweets are sent every two days today than had ever been sent prior to Election Day 2008 - and Election Day 2008's Tweet volume represents only about six minutes of Tweets today. All this explosive growth in conversation has fueled Twitter as a platform for civic debate and created a massive data set for analysis - data our Government & Politics team has used to study the State of the Union, a FOX News debate, Super Tuesday, gay marriage and other election-year topics. For the first time, it's possible to measure conversations that just an election cycle ago were limited to coffee shops, dinner tables and water coolers. Today, we're launching the Twitter Political Index, a daily measurement of Twitter users' feelings towards the candidates as expressed in nearly two million Tweets each week." | Colbert Grills Chris Hayes on New Book, the Demise of the Elite-and Neckties | MSNBC host Chris Hayes has written a new book called Twilight of the Elites: America After Meritocracy-which Stephen Colbert finds slightly suspect. For one, Colbert wonders of Hayes, his show guest from last week, isn't Chris Hayes part of the media elite? Hayes is a great sport for Colbert's spoofy goading, admits his title is more aspirational than actual-if only the elites were in a twilight-and ribs Colbert back for not using the subway 15 stops from his studio. Most importantly, Hayes indicts the "colossal and catastrophic failure by the pillar institutions in the country... and the effects of that, the costs of it, are not borne by the Stephen Colberts of the world... they're borne by the people who are 15 stops away." Then Colbert calls him a populist. It's pretty great! Watch via Huffington Post here: | watch interview here |

Dallas Liberally drinking changing and growing - wants you involved! |
Greetings! We are overwhelmed with the response we've been getting to the new and improved Drinking Liberally. It is exciting to see new members join us and see the continuing participation of our original group. It was high time for us to do some new things and we love trying venues and events with our Drinking Liberally buddies. We also appreciate the distance some of you travel to participate and the time that all over you give with your presence. We don't take it lightly.
We have some thoughts to share that can add to your enjoyment of our gatherings:
1. As we try new venues and events we know that some will work out better than others. If you're unhappy with a specific venue, just share with your hosts. Our bartenders and wait staff are tending large groups during busy times and deserve our respect for their efforts. A thoughtful approach is always appreciated. 2. "Drinking Liberally" is just a play on words, not a commandment. No one need feel uncomfortable ordering non-alcoholic beverages. I know I don't. (My favorite this summer is ½ soda and ½ cranberry juice.) Please don't feel this is a college kegger and that over-indulgence is a requirement. This is social sipping only and no one wants a DUI...or worse. 3. Living Liberally/Drinking Liberally is about creating tolerant social atmosphere for progressives of all stripes. We welcome open minded, friendly discussions in city and time when that is hard to come by. 4. If you have something you'd prefer to relate to us, your hosts, privately; please feel free to do that. We can be privately messaged on Facebook and we welcome your discretion.
Best wishes and please visit again. We all benefit by being involved in an interesting mix of people and each one of you is what makes that happen. Contact Diane
