Virgin America Lets Flyers Register To Vote On Planes

As a way to promote its new route from San Francisco to Washington DC, Virgin America is letting flyers register to vote using its in-air entertainment platform Red and a smartphone.

Beginning today, guests on Virgin America flights can use their smartphones to scan a QR code on the screen of the seat in front of them which will lead them to a landing page where they can register to vote. The mobile app is powered by PromoJam Social Marketing Platform and is made possible through a partnership with Rock the Vote.

As part of the promotion, "presidential" impersonators will be aboard the maiden flight from SFO to DC today.

Washington State recently launched an app that lets voters register to vote on Facebook. The app is part of a collaboration between the state, Facebook and Microsoft.

Ryan no stranger to Texans

FORT WORTH, Texas - Paul Ryan is no stranger to Texans.

The newly anointed Republican vice presidential nominee was a keynote speaker at the state Republican Party's convention in Fort Worth this summer and he traveled to Texas vouching for Ted Cruz, who last month claimed the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat Kay Bailey Hutchison will leave next year.

"In Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has chosen a champion of fiscal sanity and a formidable advocate for policies that will get our country back on the right path," Cruz said Saturday."When it comes to the federal budget, we can't afford four more years of reckless, runaway spending. As the next president and vice president of the United States, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will lead an administration that finally brings fiscal responsibility back to Washington," he said.

77 Years After FDR Signs Social Security, VP Pick Paul Ryan Pushes Dismantling the Social Safety Net

Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney's newly picked running mate, Paul Ryan, is on the forefront of efforts to dismantle Social Security by putting seniors' savings into risky Wall Street investments. Over the years, Ryan has not only pushed for privatizing Social Security, but also dismantling Medicare and slashing funding for Medicaid. We speak with two experts on Social Security: independent journalist Eric Laursen, author of the book The People's Pension: The Struggle to Defend Social Security Since Reagan, and Heather McGhee, vice president of policy and outreach at the progressive policy group Demos and co-author of a chapter on retirement insecurity in the book Inequality Matters: The Growing Economic Divide in America and its Poisonous Consequences. How Texas Came Within an Atom's Breadth of Discovering the God's Particle

Ryszard Stroynowski sat bathed in the pale glow of his laptop screen. At 2 in the morning of Independence Day, as the final, fugitive firecracker reports of the night crackled across a sleeping Dallas, the 65-year-old physicist was wide awake. As he watched the live broadcast in his pajamas, his colleagues at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, the locus of the physics universe, tolled the end of the search for an elusive force that had confounded them for half a century. It was the final puzzle piece in a theory that describes with unfathomable precision the fundamental particles of the universe and the laws they obey. This piece, known as the Higgs boson and ... more

Why Paul Ryan is a Gift to Progressives

Why Paul Ryan is a Gift to Progressives

An Unserious Man

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Mitt Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate led to a wave of pundit accolades. Now, declared writer after writer, we're going to have a real debate about the nation's fiscal future. This was predictable: never mind the Tea Party, Mr. Ryan's true constituency is the commentariat, which years ago decided that he was the Honest, Serious Conservative, whose proposals deserve respect even if you don't like him.

But he isn't and they don't. Ryanomics is and always has been a con game, although to be fair, it has become even more of a con since Mr. Ryan joined the ticket.

Texas Executes Man With IQ of 61; State Cites Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" To Justify Killing

Last night, Texas executed 54-year-old Marvin Wilson, despite evidence that he was mentally disabled, which might have saved him from execution under a 2002 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Wilson is the second prisoner in Texas to be executed by a new lethal injection method involving a single drug. We speak with Democracy Now! producer Renée Feltz, who has long reported on the death penalty. Feltz reads from a statement by the son of legendary author John Steinbeck condemning Texas for using Steinbeck's fictional character, Lennie Small, from "Of Mice and Men," as a "benchmark to identify whether defendants with intellectual disability should live or die."

ACLU Announces Settlement in "Highway Robbery" Cases in Texas

Consent Decree Reforms Egregious Asset Forfeiture Practices and Rampant Racial Profiling by Police

NEW YORK - Police in an East Texas city will no longer enrich their coffers by seizing assets from innocent Black and Latino drivers and threatening them with baseless criminal charges, under a settlement reached today with the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU settled a class-action suit, pending court approval, against officials in Tenaha and Shelby County, where it is estimated police seized $3 million between 2006 and 2008 in at least 140 cases. Police officers routinely pulled over motorists in the vicinity of Tenaha without any legal justification, asked if they were carrying cash and, if they were, ordered them to sign over the cash to the city or face charges of money laundering or other serious crimes.

Hey Texas, Climate Change Denial Isn't Funny Anymore

It's not funny anymore. It's depressing and scary. I'm talking about the almost-gleeful denial of climate change by Texas leaders, even as its effects become increasingly evident.

Look around the planet. Arctic sea ice is melting faster this summer than at any other time. In the U.S., the last 12 months were the hottest on record. March temperatures nationwide were 8.6 degrees above the average, and in some places 20 to 40 degrees above average. More than 15,000 warm temperature records were broken across the country that month. Massive wildfires in Colorado. Withering crops in farm states. A wild "super derecho" storm that rolled across the Midwest into Washington, D.C. Last year, Texas burned and sweated through the hottest summer ever recorded in U.S. history. It was pretty dry too.

Not all these extreme weather events are caused, or even worsened, by climate change. But scientists are increasingly confident that a warming planet raises the probability of extreme, record-breaking weather events. (The metaphor du jour is of a steroidal slugger breaking record after record.)

Ryan's Ayn Rand obsession

Everything you ever wanted to know about the objectivist author who inspired Romney's V.P. pick

"The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand." That's freshly minted GOP vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan talking - statements he would eventually recant - at a party celebrating what would have been the prolific author's 100th birthday.

Rand's books are a big driver in the long-term right-wing campaign to delude millions of people into believing that there's no such thing as society - that everyone must look out only for themselves. Lately, Rand's work has enjoyed a major revival of interest. Besides Ryan, she's inspired yoga-wear company Lululemon to publish her quotations on its products, and she's even made inroads into the North American semi-socialist enclave of Canada.

George P. Bush takes a leading role in Texas GOP

FORT WORTH, Texas - George P. Bush has signed on to serve as deputy finance chairman for the Republican Party of Texas.

The nephew of former President George W. Bush and son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the 36-year-old Bush -- long considered by some as the future leader of the Republican Party -- has been closely watched from his days at law school to his deployment to Afghanistan as an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve.

"I am excited about this opportunity to help the Republican Party here in Texas," he told the Star-Telegram in a written statement. "We have excellent candidates running for office who, once elected, will continue the tradition of making Texas the greatest State in the Union."
