Democracy Now |
Several months before Occupy Wall Street, the Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz wrote "Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%," an article for Vanity Fair. He returns to the subject in his new book looking at how inequality is now greater in the United States than any other industrialized nation. He notes that the six heirs of the Wal-Mart fortune command wealth equivalent to the entire bottom 30 percent of American society. On Tuesday, Bloomberg News reported that pay for the top CEOs on Wall Street increased by more than 20 percent last year. Meanwhile, census data shows nearly one in two Americans, or 150 million people, have fallen into poverty or could be classified as low-income. Watch/Listen/Read The new book, Private: Bradley Manning, WikiLeaks, and the Biggest Exposure of Official Secrets in American History, tracks Manning's trajectory from growing up as a gay teen in small-town Oklahoma to joining the U.S. Army, where he found success as an intelligence analyst before being charged with the largest U.S. intelligence breach on record. We speak with the book's author, Denver Nicks. Watch/Listen/Read |
VIDEO: ProPublica's "Free the Files" Project on Rachel Maddow |
** sign up to help locally with this project ** Last night, reporter Justin Elliott was a guest on The Rachel Maddow Show to talk about ProPublica's Free the Files project, a crowdsourcing effort to post political ad data online. By law, broadcasters are required to keep detailed information on these ads, including when they aired, how much they cost, and who bought them. This treasure trove of data, however, is kept in cumbersome paper files that are only accessible by physically visiting local stations. The FCC has since voted to require broadcasters to upload these documents online, but media companies have been lobbying against this transparency measure. Earlier this week, Elliott reported on Republican efforts to block funding for the FCC to implement this measure and further delay the transition to an online database. As Maddow highlights in the segment, "the investigative journalism all-stars over at ProPublica have decided that watching and waiting for this to wend its way through the system is kinda boring." Instead, we had readers from across the country help us "free the files" at their local stations and post the data online, and we hope you'll continue to follow our reporting on this important election season issue. |
Billionaires for the Ryan Plan attend Republican state convention |
The Billionaires stand by the entrance on Houston Street, so delegates have to walk by the small crowd on their way to and from lunch. A few tell the Billionaires to get a job. Others, like the man in the Revolutionary War hat, linger by the door and watch. A woman in a Ted Cruz t-shirt takes pictures. "Can I get a group shot?" Counting the handbag dog named Dotty, there are nine of them. The men wear top hats; the women, shimmering dresses and feathery pink boas. One drinks water from a champagne flute. Another has hundred-dollar bills stuffed into his coat pockets. They carry signs that read "Wealthcare for the wealthy" and, "It's class war and we're winning."read on ** of course these are local progressive activists ! Very effective action ! |

Ben and Jerry's Co-founder: Time to Occupy Dollar Bills |
Yahoo! News reports that Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, is teaming up with Move to Amend to "distribute rubber stamps with anti-corporate election spending messages so that the politically-minded can mark their dollar bills." Cohen plans to put a giant stamping machine on a national tour in August to encourage "thousands of people to buy rubber stamps and stamp any currency that comes into their possession." Slogans like "Corporations are not people," "Money is not speech" and "Not to be used for bribing politicians," will now adorn currency in an Occupy cash campaign. The goal of Move to Amend is to secure a constitutional amendment that says "corporations do not enjoy the same protected rights as individuals and that money is not a form of speech." Cohen's attorney says that as long as the bills are still legible, it is legal to put the stamps on them. read on |

WATCH: A Dallas Pastor's Inspiring Endorsement of Marriage Equality |
Pastor Frederick Haynes of the Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas gave a powerful sermon in support of President Obama's recent endorsement of marriage equality. Haynes notes that during his oath of office, Obama vowed to uphold the constitution, not the Bible. During his sermon, which criticized both fellow pastors and the congregation for their condemnation of marriage equality, "the congregation stood up and shouted their disapproval at him." Haynes argued that the congregation should change its views:

Some merchandise at Texas Republican Convention is made in China | It's not all politics at the Republican state convention. Delegates are crowding concession booths to haul off everything from "conservative" children's literature to glittery elephant-shaped brooches and nonpartisan $75 neckties with armadillos and oil-field pump jacks instead of pachyderms. Despite all the patriotic flag-waving at the gathering, many of the goods were made in communist China. And an "I Palin" T-shirt for women was sewn in Nicaragua -- led by President Daniel Ortega of the socialist Sandinista National Liberation Front, against whom President Ronald Reagan armed the contra force.
